An action packed schedule from start to finish!

The trip delivered on everything promised but there was a lot of time spent travelling in the mini buses with all the trips taking longer than anticipated. A great introduction to Bali but more time needed to truly immerse yourself in the culture and Balinese life so definitely worth extending the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The cookery class was superb and the vintage Vespa ride great fun. Enjoyed pretty much all the activities so hard to narrow it down.

Thoughts on Group Leader

A little disorganised at times and didn’t always keep to timings but not a problem. He was always willing to help out and it can’t be easy keeping 16 people happy all the time!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Plan to spend some extra time in Bali as there really was no spare time at all. Be prepared to spend hours everyday travelling by minibus.

Reasonable Value

Our Exodus tour seemed to be a reasonable value. The customer service experience isn’t as good as other companies, but that might be a get-what-you-pay-for outcome.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Self-guided.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The hotels were better than we expected. Not Exodus’s fault, but all our hotel rooms were unairconditioned, so it was hot (leaving the windows open in-town makes it quite loud). Exodus says their bikes are “hybrid”…that might be a tour-industry term. The bikes are heavy upright rental bikes with a big bouncy seat and huge tires…not what US customers might consider to be a hybrid bike you’d use for distance riding. Consider bringing your own seat and clipless pedals (which the guy delivering the bikes said he can’t install). We found you need to pay (in cash only) a daily tourist tax at hotels in Austria, not included in your tour price. Exodus added a wine tasting on our tour, which turned out to be very nice…pleasant tasting room, courteous service, excellent wine. The printed and app directions weren’t as easy as other tour company’s apps, but it’s not a huge deal since you’re just biking down-river. The provided navigation app crashed a few times a day, but when it worked, it took you to the town, but not the hotel. This is not also a big deal in a tiny town…but one hotel required waiting for a van to take you 5 miles up into the hills, and our Vienna hotel was on the outskirts and without navigation it was a harrowing 90-minute experience trying to bike/walk through busy Vienna roads without English-language instructions. Some emailed questions we asked Exodus were never answered, and other answers were delayed a number of days before someone got back to us. After we paid, we were required to sign a document that literally says “Exodus can cancel our trip for any reason whatsoever”. So, you’d be on the hook for international airfare you bought. Which raises the issue of travel insurance. In its documentation it sends after you pay, Exodus says, “Please note to travel with Exodus, you must have adequate [insurance] coverage for the activities involved”. In other post-payment documentation, it says, “You must carry proof of insurance with you on your tour: if you cannot provide this at the start of the trip, you will be required to take out a suitable policy at that time.” Both times, Exodus provides the link to their “partner”, Redpoint Travel Protection. Judging one’s tolerance for risk is obviously (and only) the consumer’s decision, but Exodus’s pretend-compulsory upsell was kind of a stain on what would have been a reasonable consumer experience.

JP was great at suggesting and organising activites to satisfy a wide range of needs on our trip. He also was able to salvage days that were altered by road closures, all at the last minute. We was very helpful and good natured.

Fantastic coastal walking & beaches.

It was our first visit to Portugal and the coastal scenery was fantastic. The 3 hotels were comfortable and the food good. Our guides Luis and Ines were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and passionate to share the local area with us and ensure that we had the best experience. The coastal walking has stretches of soft sand but also some rocky ascents and descents. We loved having time on the beaches and in the sea. The weather was lovely and warm in September with only 1 short shower during the week.

Most Inspirational Moment

We had a fantastic week with good company, amazing scenery, good food and good views of the cliff nesting white storks and other sea birds.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Luis and Ines were outstanding guides and went above and beyond to give us a great weeks walking in coastal Portugal.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Shoes and or walking boots with good grip.

What no kettle !

Yes thats right it seems Albania hotels don’t have kettles/tea making facilities. But in reality you don’t miss it in what is a great tester of your cycling ability. Its tough but do-able for everyone. You will come home feeling less afraid to cycle those hills after a week in the Albanian mountains. Great food and plentyful with fresh salads, veg and fish. Excellent guides who went that extra mie for everyone.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being able to cycle for over 3 hours up spiralling mountains.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Above what you expect both Elris and the driver were excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes if you want a cuppa ,bring your own small kettle and supplies.

Best of Peru - Premium Adventure

"Uvaldo was phenomenal. He was concerned about our well being and health and demonstrated knowledge in how to avoid altitude sickness. He has encyclopedic knowledge of Inca and pre-Inca history. He was a master logistician to arrange each day's schedule and manage every detail from getting us through the servicios hygenicos most quickly to ensuring we got through all the airport lines to board our planes most efficiently. We laughed together and genuinely enjoyed his company. He encouraged us on the Inca Trail and kept us moving along steadily. I would recommend Uvaldo unconditionally to any visitor to Peru."

A memorable experience

Jordan is packed full of ancient history and extraordinary landscapes. We absolutely loved our visit and learnt a huge amount about this country and the surrounding region. We were in a group of 20 like-minded travellers, ranging in age from 20’s to 70’s. We thoroughly enjoyed their company, and the shared experience was a huge positive.

Most Inspirational Moment

Although we had visited Petra the previous day with our guide, on our second day in Petra we decided to get up early so we could enter the site for its 6.00am opening. There are inevitably lots of visitors at Petra, but there are far less people at this time of day and the temperature is much cooler. Sipping freshly brewed Arabic coffee (delicious!) at 7.00am in front of the Treasury before the crowds had gathered was so worth it! The light was magical. But there were other special moments too: exploring the unexpectedly large Jerash site with its huge array of columns; sitting on the sand exploring the night sky in Wadi Rum; sharing jokes with each other whilst riding our camels across the desert as well as floating in the Dead Sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The leader for most of our trip was Amer. He was friendly, helpful, and very experienced. Amer was hugely knowledgeable about all aspects of the region’s history, culture, and religion, and answered all the group’s questions in a comprehensive and often humorous way. He often took extra time to expand his answers so that we fully understood both the past and present political and religious complexities concerned: As a proud Jordanian his perspective on the topic of Palestine reflected his views. More generally, Amer took time to explain the plans/timings for each day. With such a busy schedule I think we all appreciated his organisational skills. On the coach he ensured there were plenty of regular breaks on the longer drives. He also handled check-in procedures at each hotel so generally all we needed to do was to collect our room key from him.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are worried about the visa / arrival process, for us this went very smoothly as the Exodus rep at the airport was extremely good. Be aware that on this itinerary, you will arrive at your first hotel in Amman around 2am after the visa procedure and transport from airport etc. You are then asked to be available for departure (after breakfast) at 8am the next day for a day trip to Jerash. Some may consider adding an extra night at the beginning to address this. The Day 3 itinerary which is the drive to Petra was very long but did contain several stops along the way. Departure was around 8am but arrival in Petra was not until around 7:30 so prepare for a long day. Try to get up for 6am when the site opens on your free day in Petra. There are far less people at this time of day, the temperature is much cooler and the light is magical. Bring beach shoes for Aqaba and the Dead Sea. We forgot ours, and whilst the pebbles and grit weren’t a problem the sand was burningly hot! If you can, bring a LARGE water bottle. This saves the chore of filling up every stop. Payment by card is simple in many locations, even to the craftspeople/store holders in the Siq at Petra! Even so, bring plenty of Jordanian Dinars for food/drink/snacks etc. Also, we had to hand over quite a bit of cash to our guide to support the tips strategy (see below) so make sure you bring enough to cover this aspect. We had a small pair of binoculars confiscated by security when we checked in at our hotel at the Dead Sea Resort. They were returned just before we left for the airport. Although the hotel is in Jordan, its proximity to Israel seems to make the staff nervous of such items, so beware. We recommend you either do not bring binoculars at all, or are prepared to do without them for this part of your stay. All the hotels were OK, but nothing special. This wasn’t really a ‘hotel holiday’. From our perspective, if the accommodation is clean with reliable plumbing and has reasonably comfortably beds that’s fine, and that was our experience. Hotel breakfast buffets were variable in range of options but there was something available for everyone. As a coeliac I was able to cope although I did bring enough gluten free rolls to last the full week. Eating out (or at the hotel) was simple and the places we visited offered many venues, but the food at each was pretty much the same everywhere: cold mezze followed by kebabs or lamb/chicken stews with vegetables.
