UNDISCOVERED ATLAS

A great week – was challenging without being tough and felt away from typical tourist sites. Despite a freak snow shower it was managed brilliantly, with a re-route organised and accommodation arranged in a village for one night. Great group and a fantastic guide – Abdulleh. I really felt like everything was done to just allow us to enjoy the walking, scenery… and amazing food! Exodus have recently changed the route slightly to use better campsites and I think this is a good idea – the campsites where all fantastic and in beautiful locations.

Most Inspirational Moment

It's hard to pick one... the re-route walk on the day of the snow was pretty special because we saw all range of weahter and it was a long day so getting to the village at the end was a real relief. Once the sun came out the colours and views became clearer and richer and it really felt like we had earned it! We went to Fatima's for tea (in one of the local villages) which was really interesting. I also did the traditional hammam in Tarroudant at the end which is one of the most authentic experiences I have had.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Abdulleh was amazing. He had the perfect balance of being funny, informative and in control. I felt like we were in really safe hands with someone who knew the moutains like the back of his hand. This was particulaly noticeable on the day we had to re-route!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring warm clothes for the evenings and water purification tablets as you can't buy water for most of the week. Also bring swim stuff for the (cold!) springs in the last campsite.

KENYA & TANZANIA ADVENTURE

Would have been much more enjoyable if we could have cut out long, dusty journey to Tanga and flown from Moshie to Zanzibar. This would have allowed us one more day to explore Serengeti. Would have been less tiring if we could have camped in same place for a few nights and explored in different directions from base.

O.K. but could have been more helpful with information about where laundry services were being offered.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for long, dusty days spent in a truck having an "African Massage" i.e. roads are very bumpy and full of craters.Be prepared for early morning starts and not having much time to write a journel until the very end.Be aware that you are on the move nearly every day and become very adept at pitching and packing up tent!!

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Most Inspirational Moment

The magic of the wonderland of the Oulanka national park. Husky sledding - the amazing snow scene - stunning sculpture-like landscape - the beautiful dogs.Cross country skiing - an achievement that I learned a few basics and managed to keep upright!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Martti gave clear instructions for all the activities and shared his knowledge and enthusiasm of the country with us throughout the week. He was well supported by all the centre staff team.All the staff provided over and above service to fit in everyone's needs and preferences eg for extra activities and timings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It does work out quite expensive with the additional activities.However, if you want a special winter holiday, this is the one!

WALKING THE AMALFI COAST

This trip offers the perfect combination of walking, beautifuly scenery, heritage and sightseeing! The beautiful views of the Amalfi coastline, the charming and elegant atmosphere of Amalfi and Positano, the superbly cooked food of Hotel Le Due Torri are all highlights of this tour. Overall, the complete and various itinerary Exodus offers truly reveals the essence of Italy and of its natural, historic and culinary treasures! Not to be missed!

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the ruins of Pompeii felt like talking a trip back to the ancient and elegant Roman era: A truly inspirational moment followed by an exciting walk along the crater of Mount Vesuvius. The beauty of the sleeping (yet active) volcano is something that I haven't forgotten!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine's knolwedge of the local area was impressive... her passion and expertise contributed to make trip a very enjoyable experience for evryone. Her attention to detail, humour and positive and calm attitude make her a perfect group leader!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The terrain can be quite difficult in some of the walks. Walking poles can be helpful is some cases! Although other members of the group found some of the walks quite challenging, I believe they were all perfectly achievable with a minimun level of fitness. The pace is leisurely and lots of breaks are taken so the less fit walkers shouldn't worry!

MARRAKECH & THE SAHARA

Loved it, a hassle free way of seeing Morocco. It would be difficult to visit all the places we went in such a short space of time independently.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think my best bit was the visit to the library and pottery. I think this was partly due to me not expecting much from the day which turned out to be really interesting. Then the bus broke down, which also turned into a highlight as we went for a walk and had mint tea in a family’s home.

He was very knowledgeable and experienced which meant we could just sit back, relax and enjoy all the experiences.

If you want to get to know Morocco and don't have much time- Book it

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

This was a great experience, both as a holiday and as an adventure. Lasting just over two weeks and covering around 1000 miles, this tour offered a comprehensive insight into Sri Lankan life and countryside. Congenial company, a superbly organised leader and a remarkably composed driver (the traffic is wild!) combined to make this a wonderful trip. Strongly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many that it is impossible to select just one.The cycle ride through through beautiful countryside to a small village for lunch was great fun, despite everyone being totally soaked in a tropical downpour. We certainly entertained the local children who came out in numbers to cheer the mad drenched Brits.The splendour and colour of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy will last long in the memory, as will a posh colonial style dinner at the Hill Club at Nuwara Eliya.Finally the walk on Horton Plains provided some much needed exercise after too many irresistible buffet dinners, with a spectacular waterfall, glorious views and a rare sighting of a giant Sri Lankan squirrel.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sujan was excellent. His success in organising stress-free transport, baggage transfer and hotel check-ins throughout the holiday was remarkable. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of Sri Lankan wildlife, history and geography, including the widespread location of accessible clean public toilet facilities (an essential attribute given that most of the travellers were on the wrong side of 60). Perhaps his greatest skill was in gently herding 18 free spirits through a relatively busy schedule without appearing to be in any way bossy or harassed.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The birdlife in Sri Lanka is fantastic and with hindsight we wish that we had brought better binoculars and a camera with a good close-up lens. Most of the activities are great fun, but several members of the group were disappoined by the Yala safari drive, possibly because of the 4-5 hour bone-shaking drive over endless pot-holes in a jeep with dubious suspension. If you are prone to sea sickness it would be wise to hesitate before signing up for the whale watching - one unfortunate group member was prostate for most of the boat-trip. And don't forget the suncream and the mossie spray. The mosquitoes were not too abundant but they do venture forth at dusk in the hope of finding some tasty unprotected tourist blood.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

This was a really good holiday, an amazing country, lots of different places to see and different activities to do. Weather was fab and food was good enough that I am trying to recreate it at home.

PETRA & WADI RUM BY BIKE

We had a wonderful time. A great mixture of sightseeing and cycling, including some amazing rides and archaelogical sites which really should be better known (Jerash in particular).

Most Inspirational Moment

I never thought I'd say it (not being the world's most confident cyclist), but the long bike ride through desert mountains with just the odd Bedouin, camel or goat for company. I also loved swimming in the Dead Sea and camping in the Wadi Rum, with a camel ride as a contrast to the cycling - true wilderness. However, my real highlight was when Khaled, our wonderful guide, took us to have dinner in a cave in Petra with Bedouin friends of his who had lived there for generations: not on the itinerary but not a surprise given everyone's friendliness and his huge knowledge.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Khaled was fantastic. He had a vast knowledge of the archaelogical sites and everything about the country. He was friendly and more than able to cope with any awkwardnesses in the group. Whenever anyone needed anything, he sorted it out, and I was really sorry to say goodbye. We also had the support of a team of three cyclists, who made sure the bikes were safe, fixed any little problems and even offered lifts to those who preferred to avoid the steep uphills. One of them, Fahad, had a permanent grin on his face and had us dancing to Jordanian pop music every time we stopped for a break.

Advice for Potential Travellers

February is not cold in Jordan! We were kitted out with all our woollies, which were useful for the night in the Wadi Rum but useless otherwise. We really missed having summer cycling gloves, suncream and sunglasses. Most of the time we were cycling in shorts and T-shirts during the day, though jumpers were needed at night. The bikes are heavy but felt very safe on the unfamiliar roads. I didn't regret not bringing my own bike, especially as the team sorted out any problems. Next time I would probably bring my SPD pedals and my own saddle, though.

ATLAS DESCENT

A brilliant trip with a brilliant leader – the group got on well and the weather held up except for one day. Awesome scenery and some fantastic trails 🙂

Most Inspirational Moment

For me it was completing the 4km technical climb (without pushing the bike) before the final 7km flat ride to pick up point before heading to Tiznit Hotel. I may have been at the back but I thoroughly enjoyed the climb despite the heat and extremely chuffed that I didn't have to get off and walk any of it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz was amazing - she gave very clear instructions on all parts of the route - happy for anyone to go ahead and regularly hung back with me on the climbs. She had everything organised down to the the smallest detail and she made the trip what it was. Mohammed and Ali were also brilliant as our support drivers and feeding us.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yep - take some warmer clothes, arm warmers and warm jacket as it's colder in the mountains than you think in February. The wet, hailstones and cold day was particularly horrible in fingerless gloves and shorts!!

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

An incredible trip. Fantastic scenery and the crew, headed up by Charles, were truly inspirational. Everyone in the group made it to the summit thanks to them. They were knowledgable about the flora and fauna, incredibly experienced and terrific fun to be around. I learnt lots about the mountain and Tanzania, as well as picking up a few words of Swahili. Asante!

Most Inspirational Moment

It has to be summit day. Although gruelling and operating on very little sleep in rather nippy conditions, we somehow climbed up to Stella Point in time for sunrise. The views were incredible, surrounded by glaciers and the new day dawning. I felt like I was on top of the world. It was pretty emotional but great to share it with everyone.

Charles was very organised, serious (this Kili stuff is serious business) but gentle and considerate. We all trusted his judgement and listened to every bit of advice he had to offer. He took care of us and to his credit we all made it !!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The pace is nice and slow to aid acclimatisation and it really does work. The Lemosho route is ideal as it's longer than many of the trails meaning your body has more time to grow accustomed to the altitude. Plus you pass through a variety of mountain scenery and climatic zones.
