WALKING IN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

This trip is a great mix of walking and sightseeing, just enough of each for me to totally fall for the beautiful Bosnia and Herzegovina

Most Inspirational Moment

The wild flower meadows in the Sutjeska National Park were my favourite thing, there aren't many places left like this.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Samer is such a nice man and a great group leader. He knows the area inside out so was able to take us on fabulously scenic walks but was also able to give us lots of interesting information about the history of his country.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bosnia is not the most popular holiday destination but it could be before long! Get yourself there before it gets too busy, it really is totally stunning and it isn't packed with tourists.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was my first Exodus trip & I was a little anxious about the steepness of the climbs,(as I am a bit over the hill) but our guide Ian was very encouraging, & a gentle pace kept us all chatting & enjoying the scenery. It was a magnificent walk & I am so glad I did it.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views of the beautiful Mont Blanc Massif & looking down on the villages where we had started. I felt it was quite an achievement. The abundance of colourful wildflowers in the pastures.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Ian was extremely professional, mapping the plans for each day then reviewing at night. He shared his love & knowledge of the Mts.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My husband & I are so pleased we chose to do this trip. Chaminox is a delightful village with good shopping & Chalet Chocolat was comfortable with extremely hospitable hosts, John & Jane. Their meals were varied & excellent.

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO TREK

Superb holiday largely due to the hard work and care from the guide Jose.

Most Inspirational Moment

Arrival in the Cathedral at Santiago was very moving, particularly the pilgrims service after the reflection of 8 days walking

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, would have been hard to beat

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go if you get the chance but read the pilgrimage book by paulo coelho before you travel

CAMINO DE SANTIAGO TREK

A lovely week’s walking in the very green scenery of Northern Spain.  There was a different feeling about this trip as you know you are following in the footsteps of the thousands of people that have walked that route as a pilgrimage since medieval times.

Most Inspirational Moment

The moment when you are standing in front of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostella at the end of the walk.  Also presenting your Pilgrim's passport complete with all it's stamps to get your certificate.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jose was a brilliant leader who was always cheerful and made sure that every member of the group was happy and comfortable.  He dealt with any situation efficiently and speedily.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Anyone going on this trip should ensure that they have very comfortable walking boots as some of the days are quite long.  Also take some warm clothing as it was chillier than expected when I went (May).  Keep an open mind about eating Octopus - it may be better than you think!

WALKING THE PICOS DE EUROPA

A wonderful week’s walking, with lovely Alvaro, our fantastic local guide. Fantastic scenery, beautiful birds and flowers, lovely weather, good food and really lovely company – what could be better?

Most Inspirational Moment

Every one of the five summits was an achievement, so it was a week of inspirational moments, and the best moment was our final summit, the Pica del Mancondiu at 2000 metres. But there were many other wonderful moments: Drinking a freshly-brewed cup of coffee at the refuge halfway up Mancondiu - higher than Ben Nevis! The steep walk through the beech forest on the way to Thursday's peak, the Cabeza La Mesa - the fresh green leaves were almost magical.Almost everything about the walk through the Cares Gorge - the spectacular limestone mountains looming above the rushing river far below and the canal running in and out of the rock beside the path.  And, of course, the moment on the rest day when I got on a bike and hurtled downhill for many kilometres into Llanes! A great idea by our lovely host, Jim, at the Torrecerredo hotel - we put the bikes in the back of the van for the first bit of the journey, thus avoiding a long uphill ride.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alvaro was a superb group leader. He had fantastic local knowledge and a truly caring approach: he was always thoughtful of our different capabilities and stayed flexible the whole time to find us the best routes and footpaths. He was a positive guiding light the whole week, combining excellent idiomatic English ("let's get the show on the road") and a great sense of humour with a wealth of expert knowledge about the local area, its history and geography, its flowers, trees and birds, its people and customs and the ways in which it is changing. He took great pains to ensure that we could live, as a group, entirely in the present, savouring every moment on the mountains.  I missed him when I got home!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go to this relatively little-known part of Spain. You will have a fabulous time.  Don't forget to take a shirt with a collar - the sun can be fierce up on the mountains.

THE HIGH INCA TRAIL

This trip is a great combination of remote high level altitude treking and culture with fantastic scenery, flora and fauna.

Most Inspirational Moment

Arriving at Sungate and viewing Machu PicchuThe remoteness of Salcantay region and having a full moon to visualise the hugh hulk of Salcantay surrounded by stars.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nothing was too much trouble for Wilfredo. He worked hard on keeping a group together that had mixed abilities and experience. His experience in guiding ensured it felt as though we had the Inca Trail to ourselves. In addition, his knowledge and passion for his country was always evident and he was always happy to answer our questions, even if it was the 15th time he had been asked.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The coco leaves and tea do help!

WALKING IN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

I have just returned from this trip and it was my first with Exodus. Anyone unsure if this is the trip for them all I can say is that I thought that it was excellent. Bosnia Herzegovina is a beautiful country and the guides that accompanied us on this trip were amazing, it was their enthusiasm, expertise and knowledge that really made this holiday so enjoyable.I will return to Bosnia.

Most Inspirational Moment

The beauty and peace of the Sutjeska National Park and the sumit of Maglic. You feel as if you have the whole park to yourselves it is so quiet. From a cultural point of view the first drive into Sarajevo was breathtaking and the old part of the city has a fantastic atmosphere.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Samer Hajric and as I mentioned before his friendliness and enthusiasm really made this holiday one to remember.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would strongly advise that you take a walking pole even if you don't usually use them. I don't use them and had to borrow one for the decent of Maglic. Also, pack one pair of long trousers as on the first day of walking you will go through a meadow with long grass and we all suffered from mosquito bites even with the use of insect repellent.

MADAGASCAN DISCOVERER

A varied trip with excellent scenery and loads of lemurs. You learn a lot about the people and culture of this island. I was a little nervous because of the journey times but very pleased I went. You’ll see no other country like it.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are a couple of walks across the rugged landsacape, one more of a climb than a walk and not for those with vertigo but great fun. You will see loads of lemurs. The poverty is shocking. Every where you go there are underfed children.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sol was well organised, sociable and knowledgeable. You couldn't ask for more in a tour leader

Advice for Potential Travellers

For such a big island be prepared for the long drives which are longer than stated in the trip notes because of stops you make on the way. We did several hotel to hotel journeys of 12 - 13 hours, in time to grab a quick meal and then bed. The route to Tsingy is made worse by delays waiting for ferries. One of the internal flights required us to get up at 3:30am. I would advise against this trip for anyone who is particularly unhappy with long journeys.

WALKING THE PICOS DE EUROPA

The trip was a wonderful introduction to the Picos and the walks were varied and interesting. Although the central mountains of the  Picos are  very steep and difficult, the paths we went on were easily manageable by someone of average fitness.

Most Inspirational Moment

The best moment was standing on the summit of Mancondiu at 2000 metres. The last two hundred feet or so were fun as they were a bit of a scramble, and the views from the top were magnicificent The walk up the The Cares Gorge  was a delight - the mountains around the long limestone gorge are breathtaking, and the fast running Cares River far below and the clear water in the canal at the level of the path provide a  spectacular contrast to the mountains. I went canoeing on the day off. The river is just right for novice canoeists, being easy enough to be safe but providing enough excitement to be interesting, and the day made a good contrast to walking.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was Alberro. He is a local young man who has an seemingly inexhaustible knowledge of the local ecology, flora and fauna and he cares passionatley about the local environment. He was always willing to share this knowledge and enthusiam with us. He knows all the footpaths like the back of his hand and so I always felt that we were doing the best possible option on the day, bearing in mind the weather and any other variables. He was always friendly helpful and good humoured and was a joy to be with for the week.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go there!

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

An excellent trip with some wonderful walks, magnificent Alpine scenery, a brilliant chalet with out of this world food, and some excellent company. Mild frustration that due to the severe and prolonged winter we were not able to follow all of the itinerary as it was generally not safe to walk on the tracks much above 2000m.

Most Inspirational Moment

There was not one particular moment, but this was out first ever Alpine holiday and, despite a curtailed itinerary due to the severe prolonged winter, and some initial mediocre+cloudy weather, we had many stunning and inspirational views. Another highlight was the cable car trip (on the day off) to the Aiguille du Midi

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon was very good - ex army and you knew you were in safe and dependable hands. He had to deal with rejigging the itinerary as it was unsafe to follow several of the intended routes and also deal with a group which had some folks frustrated at not walking the average of seven hours a day which the trip notes suggested, whilst others in the group wished we were doing somewhat less than we did.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would recommend this trip but suggest doing it a bit later into the season - we did it the second week of june - perhaps just a couple of weeks later than we did.On the day off you would do very well to find a more beatiful setting and excellent evening meal than at the Aiguille du Midi hotel, nestling directly beneath the Bosson glacier (also seen from the chalet)
