About sixty miles east of Genoa lies a corner of the Liguria region with a remarkably well-preserved landscape steeped in tradition. 'Cinque Terre' means five lands; villages which are nestled high on cliffs or along deep inaccessible coves, with colourful houses facing the seafront. Each village offers its own olive oils, anchovies and Sciacchetrà liqueur (known as the 'Elixir of the Gods'). By day, you discover the beautiful peninsulas of Portofino and Sestri Levante using well-marked walking trails; in the evening enjoy the sunsets over the Mediterranean.

Essential Info

Visas

Vaccinations

Italy

There are no specific health risks.

Eating and Drinking

Liguria is well-known for its delicious cuisine and classic regional dishes include pasta with pesto or walnut sauce, focaccia bread and of course plenty of seafood! With an abundance of fresh local produce and plenty of restaurants to try in Sestri Levante, food is a highlight of the trip. Vegetarians are well-catered for in Italy.

Weather

April and May departures can expect warm days, although rain is always possible. Nights may be rather cool. Early June is similar, with the days becoming progressively hotter and the evenings much warmer. Late June to August departures should expect very warm weather with temperatures over 30 degrees celsius. Late September and October are cooler and can be wetter, however visibility is better. We strongly recommend a fleece-lined jacket or warm sweater in May, September and October.

Is this trip for you?

Activity Level: 3 (Moderate)
5 days optional centre-based walking, low altitude throughout.
This is a self-guided tour, so you can walk at your own pace (we recommend taking plenty of time to rest and enjoy the views!). Although some walks will get your pulse racing you will also have plenty of time to rest, admire the views and on many days you can also enjoy swim breaks. Over the course of the week, the terrain and type of path will vary from man made paved tracks and tarmac to forest trails. Some areas may be rocky underfoot with narrow, overgrown or exposed paths. Although the walks are not technically challenging, you do need to be steady on your feet. All walks take between 2 and 6 hours including lunch stops and require a moderate level of fitness. Please note that, as on all of our walking trips, when the weather is wet some of the paths can be slippy. The steep sections on Palmaria Island have ropes to help with this.

Public transport is recommended (the cost is not included in the trip) in order to reduce your carbon footprint. The transport timetables will be provided in your route notes so you can choose the bus or train time that suits you best.
As this is a self-guided tour, there will be no group or tour leader and you are free to complete the walks at your own speed.

All prices are based on 2 persons sharing, so if there is an odd number of people travelling in your party or you are travelling alone, there will be a compulsory supplement for a single room for the tour duration.

Self guided walking tour in italy

The self guided maps were easy to follow. The hidden costs of park passes and transportation should be explained better in literature. The B&B was close to train and water, clean and friendly staff. We had a great week. It was a wonderful week of hiking in Italy. The dinner voucher was the only disappointment.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Sharing the walk with my daughter. Challenging terrain to traverse which made every view more beautiful. We were blessed with dry, sunny weather

What did you think of your group leader?

    Self guided - n/a

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

The costs of trains/buses/boat plus cost of park passes should be better explained and better understood by traveller. These costs were considerable every day and added up for the week. Do not accept dinner voucher substitution - huge disappointment !

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I was very disappointed with the last minute dinner substitution. the dinner venue changed a day before I left. The restaurant was very disappointing. There were only exodus diners present. The first 2 nights it was a set menu with only seafood items. The quality of the food was poor. We were starving after a full day of hiking and could barely eat what was presented. On the last night, we were given an actual menu. We thought this would be better. It was marginally better but still disappointing. We actually went to the restaurant that was on the original dinner voucher. The food here was excellent and lots of other diners! We would have been thrilled to enjoy 3 pre-paid dinners at this restaurant. I would like to be compensated for this last minute sub- par change. I believe the dinner charge was 20 Euros each. I also need reimbursement for downloading the app. I did not have the code to enter and had to pay for download.

excellent but more strenious than expected

instructions for self guided walking tour were, on the whole, clear and detailed. Walks were a bit more challanging than I had expected but doable. Accomodation was excellent, close to necessary train station and very good restaurants. Agreat base for daily walks.

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

Sense of achievement at the end of each day, having completed whole of day's activities without major hitches

What did you think of your group leader?

N/A - an anonymus deliverer of detailed instructions and maps. A brief introductory meeting would have been appreciated just to set the scene.

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

If you are up for a challenge and opportunity to experience magnificent scenery, go for it

    Cinque Terre Self Guided

Had a superb holiday in this lovely region of Italy - however the self guided notes were not very well written and at times were very confusing. The trains were a great means of travel between towns

What was the most inspirational moment of your trip?

The boat trip seing Cinque Terre from the water was amazing

What did you think of your group leader?

    N/A

Do you have any advice for potential travellers?

Do some research before leaving home as if you rely on the self guided notes you will be very dissapoointed.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Exodus should ensure that the information given to travellers is up to date - this was not so - the self guided notes need to be reviewed

We are pleased that Kim had a superb holiday, however we are sorry that she was disappointed by the route notes. We will be sending someone from Exodus out in the coming months (before the next departure) to thoroughly check and rewrite the route notes, so passengers in the future can have confidence that they will be of good quality.
