DISCOVER SRI LANKA

A varied and interesting introduction to Sri Lanka, it’s culture, wildlife and the geography of it’s regions

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many highlights to really single out one moment, but if pushed climbing Adams Peak for the sunrise and seeing the mountains triangular shadow on the clouds together with the bike ride with local lunch stop stand out.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sujee was great, as were the rest of the team. He had a good sense of humour and infinite patience in dealing with one particularly demanding group member. A bit more information about his country past and present would have been appreciated, but this is a very personal thing (Others may have felt he gave too much!) either way he was always happy to answer questions and it was a pleasure to have him as our guide. A few of us wanted to go back to Yala NP very early the day after our afternoon visit. Sujee arranged this for is and even saw us off at 4.30AM with a packed breakfast, how good is that!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Men - Take a shirt for the Hill Club, a great sense of colonial nostalgia and do all the options available throughout the trip, they're worth it.

A Week in Evia

A lovely week on an unspoilt Greek island with delicious food and good walks.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching the top of Mount Ohi, Thanos' knowledge of the history of the island, the wonderful Greek food and the ice cream were the best moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thanos' enthusiasm for Evia was unmistakeable. He was very knowledgeable and eager to share that knowledge with us. He was well organised and helped wherever he could with the result that the week ran very smoothly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks include a lot of downhill sections on rocky paths so be prepared for this type of walking. Vertigo sufferers may not enjoy some of the walks however each day is optional and there are other activities to enjoy on the island.April was a lovely time to visit - the weather was warm enough to swim in the sea but not too hot for walking.

TROPICAL ISLAND WANDERER - FAMILY HOLIDAY

Sri Lanka is surely underrated as a tourist destination. The whole Sri Lankan experience was a lot better than any other destination I have been to (and I have been travelling regularly for many many years). The food, people, the setting, every changing landscapes, stunning beaches and the perfect climate all makes it worth the journey. For a family it an ideal destination – where you and your kids will experience a whole new world together. It is a very child friendly place.

Most Inspirational Moment

Attempting to climbing the Sigriya rock with my son and daughter. It was tough for them and I kept on pushing them to the ultimate goal. My daughter only made it to 300ft and then gave up (vertigo!) and my son made it to the top with the help of our local leader Rouwan and the rest of the family group. Thanks guys if you are reading this. Sri Lankans....everyone was fantastic and had a smiles on their faces wherever we went. Hello, Hello... calls are still resonating in my ears.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ruwan was simply amazing. He worked very hard to make sure all of us are having fun. Everything worked like a Swiss clock work. He made sure that we make most of our time in Sri Lanka and fitted in many experiences that money cannot buy. He obviously was very passionate about his job and wanted to the best he can...which he did. Ruwan, if you are reading this, then get in touch!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try and spend your money in the smaller villages and towns. We were encouraged to do that and I can see why. Have your camera on standby as there is more wildlife to see in Sri Lanka than you can imagine.

AMALFI COAST: POMPEII & PIZZA - FAMILY HOLIDAY

All of the difficult parts of family holidays have been taken care of in this trip.  There was no debating about what to do tomorrow or trying to find something special, everything was special and the itinerary made sure there was not too long to fill with your own activities!  I also had grown-up time with company in the evening which was lovely.

Most Inspirational Moment

The complete silence for an hour that fell over 4 boys and a girl during the ceramic painting session.  From boisterous boys (and girly) to concentrated artists in the space of 5 minutes.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eduardo was a star throughout our entire trip.  He was like your favourite Grandad and the Pied Piper all in one.  The children loved him and when naughtiness or tears appeared Eduardo was there before we could put our glass of wine down to sort them out.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Lots of snacks for the children as it is busy days with not much time for stopping.  Don't expect time for coffee shops and retail therapy, Eduardo wants to show you as much of his beloved Amalfi Coast as he can in a week.

Moroccan Rolling

Hot weather, sunshine, good food, good trails and great company. This was a week to cherish, and to remember.

Most Inspirational Moment

I'd hesitate to use "insprational", it's a bit theological. The trip was just excellent fun. Six days of serious mountain biking. Some challenging parts, some dull parts and LOTS of fun parts. Rough fast descents, tricky tight switchbacks, rocky riverbeds and a little (too much for my preference) tarmac.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz is outstanding, she really made the week a success. A real live-wire - as well as riding every mile with us, she went for a run some mornings too! This girl is seriously fit!  She's always on the go: arranging the group, sorting out snacks and drinks, repairing mechanical failures, changing tyres and tubes. She's friendly and down to earth. Nothing fazes her, and she's always on hand with an encouraging word (or a first aid kit if necessary). And when we hit the town at the end of the week, she arranged entertainment and massages for us too. Our special "skills week" also had former Mountain Bike champion Paul Hinton along as an instructor. He's an amazing rider who got up or down everything we challenged him to. His guidance helped bring all of us along a little.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some on road sections. Morocco is modernising rapidly, and many of the sections of track are the only access to some mountain villages. For the convenience of the locals, these are being tarmacced, and while Exodus works hard to refresh the routes where possible, sometimes it's not - so you'll do a few miles on road on this trip. But (and I am a harsh critic) not so much that it will spoil your fun. There are enough rock gardens, singletrack and off-road descents to make this a great fun week. The hire bikes are adequate, but it's worth taking your own bike to get the most out of some of this terain. Some of the fast descents are very rough and very rocky. You can do them on a hardtail - but if you want to do it fast, you'll need a full-susser.

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

It’s really easy to summarise my trip trekking the Great Wall of China – EXCELLENT!  And not just because we were on top of the Great Wall of China absorbing the stunning views that you absolutely can not comprehend until you are actually there, but because of the fabulous tour guide Kevin!I would glady share my holiday with him again – a legend in our group (Flying monkey as we called him!!!)

Most Inspirational Moment

Sitting on top of the world, oh, I mean wall, eating a fresh juicy Chinese pear (British pears just do not compare!), looking out from one of the delapidated yet stunning watchtowers, gazing out over the Great Wall of China that literally strecthes out as far as the eye can see, with blue skies all around, sunshine beating down on you and feeling utter contentment! The wall itself, when you get as far to the top as you can is all the inspiration you need!! :-)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Kevin should be, hands down, made the winner of tour leader award! Informative, funny and so so SO helpful - He is part of the holiday and the trip would not have been the same without him! I would happily have him come on every one of my trips that I plan on booking now after having made my trip to China such an experience that my head is still there.....

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect some incredibly steep bits (the 38 steps in particular) but never be worried because not only does the group pull together but you have the continuous support of the tour guide AND local farmers too. Plus, when you get to the top - just remember to look back!100% take suncream! Even if the day starts of looking murky, when the sun comes at, what feels like the top of the world, you will feel it!

VIETNAM ADVENTURE

This is an amazing trip from the North to the South of Vietnam. You manage to visit Cities, sail in Halong Bay, travel by overnight train and get to experience some wonderful countryside. It’s hectic but there is time to rest and relax and enjoy the amazing sights. A fantastic trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to single out one thing. The night on Halong Bay was lovely. Hoi An is an amazing place with its lovely buildings and river. Sailing through the Mekong delta canals being rowed by a little old lady. The peace and quiet of the homestay. Cycling in Hoi An was great. Too windy to go to the beach, but we had a fantastic cycle through the countryside, rice fields and seeing where all the local vegetables were grown. Followed by a barbeque on a quiet river bank - bliss.Cocktails on the 50th floor of the building with the helipad in Saigon.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thuy was great. He really looked after us and took us to many lovely restaurants. We were very fussy eaters which I think proved a bit of a challenge at first but Thuy managed to make sure we were well catered for. Very knowledgeable and kind - a great representative for Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As others have said laundry is cheap and easy to get done. So travel light as there are so many beautiful clothes to buy or get made out there.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Fantastic week in an absolutely stunning landscape. A great mix of winter activities – definitely something for everyone!

Most Inspirational Moment

I enjoyed the whole range of activities we did throughout the week. Husky dog sledding was a personal favourite and snowshoeing and cross-country skiing across the frozen lake were magical. We were also lucky enough to see the northern lights- a tick for the bucket list! The hot tub and sauna were a welcome activity at the end of the day and sitting in the hot tub watching the sun set and the stars come out was a great way to end the day!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Teddy was a fantastic leader. He was skilled at all of the activities, made them all really fun (playing ultimate frizbee in snowshoes was a highlight!) and was very knowledgable about the local area. He was very patient in our repeated requests of "when can we see the northern lights?"! The other guides and staff at Basecamp were fantastic too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A brilliant trip and opportunity to try a range of winter activities in a stunning landscape. Highly recommended!

HIGHLIGHTS OF MOROCCO

This was an amazing holiday! The group of people on the trip were really friendly and they made the holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The camel trip to the desert was great. An a capella version of Molly Malone on top of a sand dune waiting for the sun to set has to be one of my highlights! The walk up through the greenery to the night in the mountains was incredibly peaceful and I could have stayed there for longer. The architechture everywhere we went was fantastic, especially inside the mosque, and the coast was a good laidback ending to the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Moustaffa was incredible, so welcoming and patient. I wasn't sure about a guided tour before I went on one, but the ability of Moustaffa to answer my endless questions was wonderful. It hadn't occurred to me before how nice it is to be able to ask all the things that pop into your head when you're travelling but can't really stop and ask random members of the public about (we learnt about everything from politics to marriage to cooking!). He was also indispensible in recommending places (and even things) to eat and drink. The local guides at each of the stops were also fantastic. Their english was superb and it was nice to have at least one female guide so we got a different view of Moroccan life.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Would advise that you take one of the sealable bags you can get for taking cameras underwater so that you do not get sand in the mechanism in the desert. Also, be aware that there is no where to change Dirham back to pounds/euros at the airport so would advise changing any Dirham you have left before you leave the city.

MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES OF EVIA

A holiday that ticked all the boxes for me.  Some wonderful scenery which came alive through the enthusiasm of our guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Not sure inspirational is the right word but the highlights were: The panoramic views atop Mount OchiThe springtime flowers and the heady scent of Orange blossom - April is a fantastic time to travelA different Taverna each evening so a real range of cuisine and all so local and fresh

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thanos is outstanding as a group leader.  I know he has led this trip many, many times before but his enthusiasm for the island, its history and people is infectious and undiminished.  He delights in recounting tales of the mythology asociated with the island, interspersed with more modern accounts of the tragedies of the German occupation.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Athens on the free day is well worth the journey especially if, like me, you haven't visited beforeSpringtime is beautiful on the island with perfect temperatures for walkingUse the supermarket for presents - much cheaper than the boutiques around the squareAsk for a seaview - there's always something going on to watchA bit of prior reading about the Greek Gods will help you appreciate Thanos' renditions
