MT TOUBKAL CLIMB

An enjoyable, better than expected, experience.  The combination of excellent organiastion by Exodus, the guide, his team, and the group has made this one of the best trips of my life so far.  The bonus was getting to the top of Toubkal!

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moment of the trip for me was the guide's and the groups support at base camp and their determination to get me to the top.  I was taken aback by their support, kindness and generosity of spirit.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wonderful.  He is a genuinely kind, fun, thoughtful and strong, yet not overpowering, leader.  Knowledgeable, supportive and very approachable, he had a flair for anticipating the needs of the group and delivering without being asked.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good equipment is essential, in particular good walking boots and walking poles (if you like to use them). There is no need to purchase water purification tablets as there is always an opportunity to buy water.  Don't underestimate the importance of sun cream and don't underestimate how good the food is.  Upon reading advice from previous Toubkal trekkers I purchased a travel pillow and found it to be one of my favourite buys for the trip.

CLASSIC KENYA SAFARI

This was an excellent trip.  Although quite short, it was very busy, and there were plenty of opportunities for game spotting. It felt a lot longer than a week – in a good way!

Most Inspirational Moment

The highlight for me - even over and above the (optional) balloon ride - was watching three cheetah dining on a recent kill.  We watched then for half an hour, even though it felt like five minutes.  They are beautiful animals, and this was the first time I had seen any in the wild.  The balloon ride too was a wonderful experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The tour was led by Davies and Ken.  They were excellent drivers and spotters, were very knowledgeable about the animals and plants and Davies in particular passed on a lot of interesting information about Kenya and the Masi.  As well as this, they were always cheerful and helpful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for early mornings!

CYCLING PUGLIA AND MATERA

Generally good trip with excellent and thoughtful guide. However due to the size of the group two guides may have been more appropriate, considering the rather expensive cost of the trip in total. beautiful scenery good company and the right level of cycling for a relative novice like me (possibly with the exception of the 70 km first day.

WALKING IN ANDALUCIA

Another great trip with Exodus lead by an amazing guide, Alex.

Most Inspirational Moment

Good walks, lovely villages, great food and some stunning views. Particularly enjoyed visiting the local villages where we were able to sample some fantastic food and meet the locals.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alex was amazing. He was an exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly and professional young man. Alex could could not have done more to make our holiday one to remember. Nothing was too much trouble organising refreshments at every stop at a cafe or bar, transport or helping those who were struggling with the walk. Alex was extremely patient dealing with all queries and all the different personalities in the group. We could not have asked for a better guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you're looking to experience village life, get away from it all, this is the trip for you.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

This was my first cycling trip with Exodus and I am currently trying to work out where the next one will be! The Dalmatian coast is absolutely beautiful, the cycling was enough to be a challenge without being too daunting and the group were inspirational.

Most Inspirational Moment

The team spirit which helped me finish the 10.5km climb on the first day! The group were a continued source of inspiration and humour.Loading our bikes onto the roof of the ferry to Mjet and swimming in the crystal clear waters was a wonderfully relaxing and fun day.The outstanding views on the long descents!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bojan was very organised and it was great to be able to concentrate on the cycling knowing that everything else was sorted out. He soon tuned into the groups rather wick sense of humour! He also took us to some great restaurants and a great cocktail bar with fantastic views (don't wear a skirt for the first night in Korcula!).  The traditional lunch and the traditional dinner were probably my favourite meals....and Boris was our trusty van driver!

Advice for Potential Travellers

As this was my first cycling trip I was worried whether I was as fit enough and tried to follow (most of) the fitness plan on the website. I am glad that I did otherwise I don't think that I would have made it up the 10.5km climb on the first day. The second day we did the 55km practically in one go, only stopping for a couple of quick drink stops, so that we could catch the 1pm ferry. The first two days were more challenging than I had expected but the rest of the week was much easier going. There was a steep descent on fairly narrow lanes and also a descent with tight bends with no barriers in places where there were some drops. For these reasons I think you need to be a fairly confident rider to really enjoy this trip. One point to note is that although there is van cover, it tends to be on an all or nothing basis for each leg and the van does not follow on behind in case you change your mind.

IMPERIAL CHINA & YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE

China is a developing country with much to offer the tourist. This tour is arranged aggressively to visit many of the highlights in 17 days. The weather can be hot and muggy, the crowds intense and the public transport teaming with passengers. Because of these challenges, a clean and comfortable hotel room is essential for a sanctuary and to recharge for the next busy day. Unfortunately shabby hotel choices are the weak ingredient of this package.

Most Inspirational Moment

I was amazed by Shanghai. The size of this metropolis stuns and the skyscrapers are beautiful. It was exceptionally clean and easy to get around. The skies were blue and the breezes welcoming. The dining choices were refreshing and tasty. The hotel was clean with a great view of the Bund.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Anson did a fine job moving our large (16) group around. It gets challenging with that many people on public transport but no one got left behind. He also organized the meals which were not provided for in the tour with most participants joining the group outing. He found us tasty, safe and inexpensive food, trying always to have us experience the regional dishes. He could have been more forthcoming at times with information about how our day would be structured or how the optional evening event would unfold to allow us to bring the right gear and/or dress appropriately.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The reason this tour costs less than $3,000 for 17 days is many meals and activities are not included. We averaged $130 per day in extra expenses (for a couple). The pace is fast, the heat & humidity can be debilitating and the hotel rooms sometimes shabby. Prepare your expectations!

TREASURES OF SICILY

A good all round trip that took in most of the big ‘must see’ sites. The food was an unexpected bonus as I had no idea just how fresh and unique it could be. The guides were attentive problems solvers when needed and very knowledgeable.

Most Inspirational Moment

It was Monreale which left me overwhelmed. Also, coming in a close second the theatre at Taomina, not so much for its looks so much as the alignment with Etna as a backdrop. Having studied 5th century Athens/States I knew how much that would have influenced the plays. Monreale was something else. I only wish I had got to see the outside cloisters, but the gold mosaics, the marble floors and designs were outstanding. The whole trip managed to encompass so much I had read only about or learned about in one country. My imagination just soared. As a child I adored the Greek myths and legends, as an adult I studied Greece and Rome, here were examples of everything, what a place!

Thoughts on Group Leader

I thought he was great. A man passionate about his country, food, its problems and his Etna. Now, I was not keen about Etna, but he coaxed me up in foul weather and actually made it very interesting.  He was also very kind about my lagging behind with a filthy cold and swollen ankles which lasted a few days. The driver was great too. Both were keen to promote Sicily and I was keen to absorb the information.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you dont like fish your diet is more restricted. There are some small cars to take you up to some sites if the heat or swollen ankles get you, which costs a few euros, same goes for Monreale steps. I took a taxi up and walked down. Its not easy getting tea. The beds were great for me, on the firm side. The hotels were fine, some were basic but clean. The only down side of Sicily are the stray dogs all over the place. They look well fed but thirsty and found on roads, sites etc. I did get bitten a few times by insects (late Sept) and our guide told us that Zingaro was bad in August. Wear a hat, take water, the tap water was fine. The heat was terrific. The mini bus just about coped with the heat. Bit of a hard ride but I didnt get backache as with my local buses. Be prepared for early starts 8 or 8.30am and they are an hour ahead too. This makes sense to help avoid some of the crowds (Monreale was packed by 10am) and the mid day heat. Take many paracetamols as they are 3 euros a small box!

CHIANTI: WALKING & WINE

Another fantastic holiday by Exodus (Waymark).  Our 7th trip.  And not our last.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through the Tuscan countryside.  Absolutely beautiful.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ale is just the most fantastic guide.  We had met him before on our trip to Spain two years ago and it was a delight to be on holiday with him again.  He makes his job look so easy but manages to combine being great company with a being a professional guide who is both informative and 'in control'.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes.  Book tickets for the Uffizi BEFORE going on the holiday.  This didn't occur to us so we essentially missed the chance of visiting the Uffizi on our day trip to Florence.  Although we found the walking very easy and pleasurable - there were still one or two people who found the going tough.  In the grading of your walking, I think you need to be explicit about the type of walking on each holiday.

KERALA & TROPICAL INDIA

Cycling on varied terrain across some quite different parts of India, from cool hills and eucalyptus forests, to tea plantations, bamboo and coconut palms as well as National Parks. Accommodation excellent (on the premium trip) and the staff incredibly helpful and caring. Sometimes the traffic was a little much, but I just got in the bus!

Most Inspirational Moment

The long downhill from Ooty was the most varied of days with amazing scenery. I also enjoyed the quality of the food, I don't think we ate the same dishes twice. We saw a wild elephant in the National Park and had time to relax as well as cycle. People were really friendly and kind.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Vishnu was great, really informative and made sure we knew what was happening each day. He was also a good first aider, and when I came off my bike on the last afternoon, he patched me up (it wasn't serious!) Our driver Ashok was so caring, and he prayed in the bus every day for our safety, which I appreciated a lot. Sheebu the mechanic looked after the bikes and made it a trouble free trip - he even sourced me a peaked hat for the downpour that threatened to wash my contact lenses from my eyes.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There's quite a lot of traffic on some segments, so be prepared for that. India has changed a lot and continues to morph, so what used to be backwater is now densely populated.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

Briiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiliant. The whole experience was great, we were not dissapointed with anything, the trip notes were accurate and Exodus kept us informed all the way.

Most Inspirational Moment

I guess the most unexpected and uplifting exerience for Kathy and I was the bonding with our fellow walkers, guide Nick, John & Jane, our hosts. The bonding of everybody was a delight, we had so much fun both on and off the walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nick was great, he was very thorough in his preparation of the walks and was attentive to everyones needs.Nicks passion for the wilderness is evident in his manner, he just lives for it. He also has a great sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it as the saying goes, I celebrated my 60th birthday on the trek and could not have been more at ease, the accomodation was fantastic. Just read the trip notes, they are comprehensive and don't be afraid to ask questions of Exodus if you have any, we found Exodus responded in a timely and professional manner.
