A WEEK IN JORDAN

From Amman to the dead sea to the wonderous place that is Petra.  Then onto Wadi Rum and the desert.  A spectacular fun packed way to spend a week !

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra, nothing can prepare you for how massive and stunningly beautiful Petra is.  Awe inspiring place. One day is spent exploring from the bottom, the next from exploring the hills and caves above the main site. My husband and I wandered down from the Safrifice area all the way down to the main site.  WE explored the caves and temples and didnt see another soul.  One of the best days of my life - if I am honest !

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very good.  Enthusiastic and full of knowledge. He made the trip fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book this trip !!! Its fantastic !!

HIDDEN TREASURES OF JORDAN

Jordan is a fantastic country, sadly bypassed by events in the Middle East. The people are friendly, the food is fantastic, the ancient sites are awe inspiring and the weather (in Oct) pleasant. There’s not much to dislike!

Most Inspirational Moment

Jerash was a suprise - a huge sprawling Roman city that bettered Pompeii I think. Petra was equally awe inspiring in size and quantity of rock chiselled buildings. Floating in the Dead Sea covered in mud was unbelievable and although snorkeling in the Red Sea was great, the views of the port not so.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zuhair was informative, helpful and added in extras such as seeing the Dead Sea Scrolls and Little Petra. He took us to good restaurants of varying price ranges (note some were more cafes/diners or street side eating places but equally as good). He was always concerned for the welfare of the group and our happiness and couldnt really be faulted. He guided us to restaurants in the evening (unlike a previous review) and was always willing to accomodate any needs.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Food can be cheaper than in the guide notes (anything from 2JD to 20JD). Lunches however were anything from 12-3pm(or non existant due to the distances travelled and availability of places) so take snacks (or rolls from the hotel breakfast buffet) to stave off hunger. Use mosquito repellant at the Dead Sea - I forgot and suffered for it!Nights and mornings are a bit chilly (in Oct) eg 13c so do take a fleece. NB: The 4x4 drive into the desert is at Desi, not Wadi Rum (if reading a guide book) but does not detract from the overall fun experience and amazing views of mountains eroded like dripping candles.

DARJEELING, SIKKIM & THE SINGALILA RIDGE

This was a fantastic trip with a wonderful team leader and support team.  Lots of variety, as much free time as you wanted, good food and excellent company.

Most Inspirational Moment

This is difficult as there were so many ...the sun cleared immediately after our arrival at the first camp site, after an afternoon of misty conditions.  We were able to see Kanchenjunga clearly that afternoon and at dawn the following day.Dillo's amazing Bollywood-style dancing at the end of trek celebration :-) cocktails/pink gin at the Windamere (sic) Hotel in Darjeeling.  Dilip managed to get us into the guests lounge, usually out of bounds for non-residents.the overnight train journey was surprisingly enjoyable, and the arrival in Calcutta in heavy rain was quite an experience.Sikkim was lovely!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dilip was an inspiration, and the group benefitted enormously from his leadership and superb organisational and team-leading skills.  He has established an impressive network of local people from the villages on the route, and we were welcomed warmly wherever we went.  His leadership style is very hands-on, and he himself greeted us every morning on trek with a cup of tea. He was constantly cheerful, despite the freak weather conditions we encountered on the trek, and was always looking for ways to make things more enjoyable for us all.  The chips and pakora were perfectly timed to lift our spirits after a day when misty conditions had obscured the mountain views that we'd all been looking forward to.  He was very good at solving all our problems, large and small - for example, when a few of us were queuing for the ladies loo in Sikkim, Dilip persuaded the restaurant owner to open the VIP toilets in the presidential suite for us.  His leadership ensured that we all had a very enjoyable holiday, despite freak weather conditions,  which were a side effect of the worst cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal in 40 years.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a good sleeping 4-season bag and the best mattress you can afford (or borrow).  It did get very cold at night on the high points of the trek.Don't hesitate to book if you're thinking of doing this trip - it's been the best holiday we've had for years.

WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF BOTSWANA

This was an amazing experience from start to finish. I was a single traveller and felt at home within my group and with the staff. It could not have gone better. I will be returning to Botswana very soon

Most Inspirational Moment

The most inspirational moment for me was being able to sit with the Painted Dogs, i have been coming to Africa for just over 20yrs and only ever seen them on my very first year on a trip to Kruger but this experience has made me realise just how endagered these specialist hunters are. I would also say the wild camping that is an experience you will never be able to explain to anyone who hasn't done it. Victoria Falls was amazing and if i could give a tip to anyone ever going there it would be to go back to Devils Cataract after lunch only then will you be able to see the beautiful rainbows ;)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group Leader Sam was fabulous, he was very knowledgable and nothing was too much trouble. He made us laugh but also ensured our safety was his priority.Joseph was just amazing(our guide) i couldn't have asked for a better guide he was very determined and his tracking skills were unbelievable. Loved this guy to pieces  he had such a lovely manner and would try to accomodate people taking pictures from both sides of the truck by turning the vehicle around.Melo his cooking was awesome, he even managed to bake fresh bread on an open fire......it was beautiful. Melo helped us with everything from tents to taking me to bushy bushy when it was dark.Vin, although was learning the trip also couldn't do enough for us he was very chatty and happy. A joy to travel with.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't think about it just do it, you will not be disappointed. Take a good camera. Lip balm is a must with the open land cruiser without it i think my lips may have dropped off my face.

WALKING IN TUSCANY

An absolutely fabulous week! Gorgeous countryside, fabulous accommodation, great food (and wine), and lovely people.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many to name one... The views, the lack of views (when reaching the top of Monte Prado and all we could see was cloud, got to just love what life throws at you hehe!), overcoming my total dislike of the rain and realising I am officially a walker of all seasons, observing the sense of achievement on people's faces after a long day of walking, and the personal sense of achievement!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sara was amazing! So professional, knowledgeable and patient.  She went the extra mile in every way possible.  She was a lovely person who really ensured that everyone on the group was happy.  I found her to be very inspirational and interesting, and loved chatting to her. She has an amazing knowledge of the local area. Been spoiled, great representative for Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book it! If you are relatively fit this will be well within your capabilities.  Be prepared for rain (if your going in October).  I opted for the positive attitude to not let this impact on my experiences.  I just embraced the big green plastic poncho and plodded on.  P.s... take a poncho, felt a bit daft at first but it was fab, saved my waterproofs getting wet, bonus!!Plus it makes photos even funnier.

WILDLIFE & WILDERNESS OF BOTSWANA

An outstanding trip – highly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole trip exceeded expectations but there were a few highlights: game walks in the Okavango Deltathe hospitality and good humour of our guidesseeing leopards (and a cub!), lions, painted dogs, elephants, giraffes, the list goes on!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sam was outstandingly organised while appearing extremely laid back. He made us feel completely at ease and entirely safe. Nothing was too much trouble and he went out of his way to make it a truly special trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a headtorch that will not get switched on in your luggage.Take extra batteries for your headtorch in case it gets switched on in your luggage! The longer drives in the open truck can be quite breezy and dusty so take something to wrap around your head and neck to keep out the dust and stop your hair blowing in your face.Take extra camera batteries and take every opportunity at camp sites to charge them up - you will need them!Relax and go with the flow - this trip is amazing!

INCA TRAIL, TITICACA & NAZCA

An excellent adventure. Spectacular and diverse landscape, ancient and modern culture, and a superb trekking work-out, all in one colourful and action-packed odyssey.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Andean scenery on the Moonstone Trek was stunning, especially on the third day as we descended towards the Sacred Valley. Unexpectedly coming across the ruin of an Inca Temple in that high and isolated place, in the shadow of the beautiful snow-capped Mount Veronica was truly evocative.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our lovely group leader, Flaminia, is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure to travel with - knowledgable, helpful and patient. Her guided tour of Machu Picchu was particularly excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be very careful with what you eat and drink, and you should have no health problems.Be prepared for blistering heat, near-freezing night time temperatures, and rain.Don't be put off by the long days spent in the 'bus - the scenery is spectacular and ever-changing. Take the optional flight over the Nazca lines if you can - trust me, this is the only way to see them.

AMALFI COAST & BAY OF NAPLES

As all previous reviewers have said : good hotel, friendly staff, good food. Beautiful coastal area and some interesting places to visit

Most Inspirational Moment

Not inspirational but I really enjoyed the 'walk of the gods' from the hotel to Positano. Lovely coastal path with great views

Thoughts on Group Leader

I can add nothing original about Eduardo.  He was informative, organised, very friendly and helpful.  A real desire for each individual in the group to have the best holiday experience.  A very real part of what makes this particular trip successful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Local bus service can be erratic which can make travelling somewhere on your free day a little difficult. There is now a gov tax of 1.50Euro per hotel night which you have to pay.  Pompeii is an interesting place to visit (which we did on our free day) but I would not bother with a guide, I think you can get a better experience if you read a little of its history before you go and walk around the place by yourself...particularly get away from the 'main' bits all guides show and wander off around the backstreets as there are far more buildings you can wander in and around with far fewer people and far more atmospheric.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

I recommend this trip but suggest doing it outside the rainy season.  The rainy season during our week was Sunday (light drizzle, just to help us acclimatise), Monday (heavy showers followed by heavy rain), Tuesday (morning downpour, afternoon showers), and Wednesday (heavy rain in between periods of torrential rain, although it did clear late in the afternoon)!  Thursday and Friday were mostly dry.  But the islands did look very beautiful between the clouds, we had a fun group of people and our guide did an excellent job of modifying the cycling and finding other activities to suit the weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hiding in a church porch whilst the rain was completely bucketing down!  The idea that we had tried to cycle and been caught out in those conditions was just so funny we all had to laugh.  So we were laughing even before the wine-tasting....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was excellent - made a real effort to modify the cycle plans to suit the occasional gaps between the heavy rain, and to find alternative activities, including cave visits and wine-tastings, due to the shorter cycling programme.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I'm sure you'll have a great time with better weather!  There are some long hills on the trip, so if you aren't a regular cyclist, do try to do a bit of training before you go.

DISCOVER COSTA RICA

A truly amazing trip which surpassed my high expectations. Everything was perfect, the accommodation, the food, the guide, Giovanni, the local guides, the itinerary which included close contact with lots of amazing wildlife and chance to become familiar with some of the culture of Costa Rica with a visit to a coffee plantation, a school and an appetising lunch with a lady who makes delicious cheese.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to choose one there were so many but my first view of a sloth was amazing, I had always wanted to see one, also getting so close to iguanas who posed beautifully for photographs. Gliding peacefully along the canals at Tortuguero was like a dream. And I loved the feeling of being so close to nature at Esquinas lodge, listening to the evening frog chorus.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Giovanni was all you could ask for in a guide. His knowledge about wildlife was extensive and he never tired of answering our endless questions.  He was obviously proud of his country and was keen for us to learn something about his people. He was able to recommend some good eating places. He was sensitive to all our needs and had a good sense of humour. He made sure dietery requirements were met and went out of his way to make sure we saw all the wildlife we could, He had amazing spotting ability, we wondered how he managed to spot some things, and would stop the bus so we could take photographs and get a closer look through his telescope. He made sure we saw the resplendant quetzal at Savegre. We were lucky enough to see male, female and juvenile.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book now it is an amazing trip. A poncho is really useful as it covers your rucksack when it rains. I took my own wellies for the muddy walks but others managed in trainers. I found my walking stick useful on really muddy tracks as it helped maintain balance when it was slippery. The walking is not difficult many of the trails are on stony tracks. I didn't need the separate holdall for the trip to Tortuguero as there was enough room for luggage even on a full boat. Check you have enough time for connecting flights in Madrid if you choose that route.A super absorbent travel towel was useful on the waterfall walk to dry off after a swim.Take plenty of insect repellent. We had to go through security again in Madrid on the return journey even my bottle of water bought airside of security in San Jose was confiscated so this might affect what you buy at duty free in San Jose.
