WALKING THE PICOS DE EUROPA

A fantastic week filled with great walking, beautiful views, great food and excellent company.  The walking was strenuous enough to almost work off the wonderful food without being too full on.  October seemed to be the perfect time of year for warm and sunny weather in this beautiful area of ‘green Spain’

Most Inspirational Moment

It's always pot luck as to who your fellow group members are, but it is always fantastic when you get on with everyone despite the mix of personalities and backgrounds.  Great moments included the wonderful views as our daily climbs got a little higher, the siesta in the field on the way down from one walk wtih the cow bells tinkling in the background, the magnificence of the Carres Gorge, the cameraderie and chat over the post walk/pre dinner beer and the sampling of the local delicacy of percebes at the well recommended fish restaurant in Llanes.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alvarro was the perfect guide, his local knowledge of flora and fauna was excellent. He was enhtusiastic and keen and more than willing to answer the many questions our group had for him on the local area and the history of his country.  His knowledge and insight into the history of his country would put most of us to shame.  His English was excellent and he was extremely patient with those of the group who found one particular part of one walk a little tricky - he even picked one of the ladies up and carried her down - to the accompaniment of some rather loud screams.  When Alvarro said 'you will love it' we invariably did!!!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you think you want to lose a couple of pounds on a walking holiday don't pick this one!! The food was excellent, from the breakfast through to the packed lunch and the wonderful evening meals. The countryside was beautiful and in early October we hardly met another soul (apart from Carres Gorge).

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Varied holiday spoiled somewhat by the untypical weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

A lot of the rides on the tour were fairly inspirational as regards scenery, although the rain did put a dampener on things.  Food was a mixed bag and I did have a bout of gastro-enteritis on the trip.  There was a lot of bus travel partly due to the fact that in October we were on the off season ferry schedules.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader arranged the rides well adapting them to the unseasonal weather.

Advice for Potential Travellers

One might be well advised to avoid October plumping for May instead to avoid adverse weather and restricted ferry services.

CYCLING VIETNAM

This was one of the most memorable holidays i have had- largely due to our fabulous, amusing and passionate group leader – Tho ( Tom) Nugyen, the fun loving fellow cyclists and the delightful Vietnamese people we met along the journey. The  route was interesting, the cycling was challenging enough to remain  enjoyable and our guide and support crew went out of their way to make it the best experience for us. I loved every part of Cycling Vietnam and would recommend it to anyone who wanted to experience authentic Vietnam.

Most Inspirational Moment

Each day had a highlight for me! The 30km downhill was a real buzz, visiting the Buddhist monestry and orphanage was heart renching, the fabulous fresh fruit, drinks and sweets prepared by the crew for our morning and afternoon breaks, the delightful children along our route and the wonderful overnight boat trip in Ha Long Bay would be up there with especially memorable moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tho Nugyen was such a nice person with a wonderful sense of humour, and his passion and respect for his country was contagious. As the group leader Tho set the tone for the group and he was a joy to be around. He looked out for each member of the  group and tried to ensure that each person achieved what they wanted from their holiday. Tho went out of his way to smooth arrangements impacted by the typhoon and we felt that Tho went the extra effort to resolve any issues  that arose- he was often seen with 3 phones on the go at once!!.  I loved especially how Tho would present us with the problem and 2 - 3 ways to resolve it. He was a real gem, knowledgeable, informative and thoughtful and his goal was to make this trip a memorable experience for us - and indeed it was.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You should be cycling fit to obtain the maximum benefit and enjoyment from the trip. All up we cycled around 550 kms ranging each day from between 30 kms to around 107km- and there was some undulating ( read "hilly') passages along they way with temperatures reaching the 30s on occasions. While the bus and support crew are there to help and you can leap onto the bus when your legs have had enough, the best sightseeing and interaction with locals comes when you are on your bike.

WALKING THE GREAT WALL

This was a trip of a lifetime! Trekking the Great Wall was an amazing experience, led by a brilliant guide. Would highly recommend it!

Most Inspirational Moment

Actually walking on the Great Wall is an incredible experience. You trek on various sections, so every day is different. It's challenging - more so than I expected! - but the scenery is breathtaking and you get a real sense of the scale of the wall. I loved the 'Spiderman' sections, where you're literally clambering up on your hands and knees, which all adds to the experience. If you like trekking, this trip is a must!I also did the Xi'an extension to see the terracotta warriors which was well worth it. Xi'an itself is a fascinating city full of hustle and bustle, and cycling round the old city walls is a great way to see it, as well as wandering the streets taking in the sights, sounds and smells.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jerry was our guide for Beijing and the wall and he was brilliant! Really passionate and enthusiastic, and he loves a joke! He took great care of us and made the trip even more special. He organised everything down to the smallest detail so we really didn't have to think for ourselves. Would love to have him on every trip!

Advice for Potential Travellers

You do need to be reasonably fit to do this trip and have a good head for heights, but if you like a challenge without pushing yourself to extremes, this will suit you. Be prepared for some very basic conditions (I took a sleeping bag so always had clean bedding, plus it did get very cold on some nights), and if you don't like Chinese food, then take plenty of snacks as you'll be eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner! (The food was excellent though!)Make sure you have a large memory card for your camera as you'll end up with hundreds of photos - every few steps the wall looks more breathtaking than where you've just come from, and you'll always be chasing that perfect picture!

WALKING THE PICOS DE EUROPA

The perfect mix of good walking companions, an excellent leader, fantastic scenery and a friendly hotel with excellent food. The walks were varied in length and pace and were well designed to take in the variety of scenery from deep gorges, spectacular mountain views, wildlife as well as a few village bars!

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day had at least one WOW moment. The (slightly scarey) view looking deep down into the Carres Gorge. Sharing the exhileration of climbing a 2000m summit with the rest of the group. Falling asleep in a sunny meadow after lunch. A cup of coffee bought from a mountain refuge on a chilly morning.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alvaro was fantastic. He made us all feel welcome right from meeting us at the airport with a big smile. He was excellent at preparing us for each walk - what to expect in terms of difficulty and what weather to expect. He was  very good at judging the pace of the group, supporting members when needed to acheive that final scramble to the summit. He was very knowledgeable about his country's history, heritage and wildlife and was also interested in finding out about each person in the group. He had a good sense of humour and a charmingly creative use of English. Now, if he was only to get a decent hair cut.....

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like walking in mountains but without the extremes of too much scrambling or difficult descents then this is the perfect trip. We were lucky with the weather in early October but be prepared for wet or cold weather particularly up high.

SICILIAN VOLCANOES

Really enjoyed this trip, lots of variety from chaotic Catania to the tranquility and clear blue seas of the volcanic islands and the mars scape at the top of Etna. Walking was not too hard or too easy (it pays to be a bit fit though)

Most Inspirational Moment

Watching the firey erruptions from the top of Stromboli at sunset and the climb down at night , like sliding down the worlds biggest sand dune.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Salvatore was great, good sense of humour relaxed and willing to accomodate group and individual wishes. The assistant leader Eva on her first trip was lovely and an experienced photographic instructor as an added bonus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you spend another few days in Sicilly after the trip, there is so much to see, so much variety and it really is an easy place to travel using public transport. Get fit first and you will enjoy the walks and climbs so much more.

CUBAN HIGHLIGHTS RIDE

What better way to justify another mojito than by burning off the calories cycling along the amazing Caribbean coast of Cuba! With great views, an amazing and informative guide and not too many hills to spoil the rest of the holiday!

Most Inspirational Moment

Meeting the locals and having the opportunity to stay in a Casa was the best part of the trip for me.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had Freddy, a local Cuban with 20 years experience as a guide in Cuba and the cycling proesse of the pros! With a wicked sense of humour and a relaxed antitude it was great to hear his views about the country.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The cycling isn't as bad as some had expected.  All of the the bikes are boy bikes however, so if you do a lot of cycling yourself you may want to consider bringing your own seat.I also took a handlebar with me so I could put my camera in it.  This was the only thing I needed close to hand as the bus was always not far behind.  Many people didn't even have a rucksack with them.

CARPATHIAN CULTURE AND WILDLIFE

This was a brilliant trip, the scenery was beautiful, the group leader was full of good stories, the accommodation was gorgeous, the food was delicious and the hosts were extremely welcoming.

Most Inspirational Moment

Having arrived in the dark, waking up on the first morning and stepping out on to our lovely balcony to admire the sun rising over the stunning mountains covered in a thick layer of fresh snow! Breathtaking! Also seeing bears in the wild - it was amazing to be that close to them - although slightly un-nerving too!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Udo our group leader was great fun.  Full of stories and information of the history, flora, fauna, the people and the place.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't go expecting to see wildlife, accept that wildlife is elusive and that any sightings are a bonus.  The trip notes do give the impression that seeing wolves and beavers is possibly more likely than it is.  We were lucky seeing 5 bears at the hide and the splash of a beaver going into the water, but I think expectations were raised a little high.  The scenery, people and more easily spotted flora and fauna made this trip excellent.

HIDDEN TREASURES OF JORDAN

It was advertised as leisurely but it was much more energetic than that.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking through Petra and trying to get upright in the dead sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was informative but pushed his religion too much

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take sturdy footwear.

MONT BLANC HIGHLIGHTS

This was a really enjoyable week walking with a very pleasant and interesting group of people.  Our hosts Jayne and John at Chalet Chocolat gave us a warm welcome and provided excellent food.

Most Inspirational Moment

Probably the top station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car.  The mountain views up there are fantastic.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark was very good.  He led the group in a relaxed way, letting people come along at their own pace, which meant that I never felt rushed.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes and walking grade before booking.  There were people in the group who were surprised by the steep ascents and struggled to do them.
