Is This Trip for You?

This trip is rated Activity Level 4 (Moderate & Challenging). For more information on our trip gradings, visit the Activity Level Guidelines page. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip, please contact us.

Suitability: This trip is considered among our more challenging Activity Level 4 adventures – Day 8 is even slightly above the normal maximum distance and altitude gain for this level. We mostly hike on tea trails and good paths; however, there are some short sections that are more difficult underfoot and sometimes slippery. On Day 9, the descent from Ella Rock is steep and can be hard on the knees, and if you climb Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), you will miss a night’s sleep.

Group

Our Sri Lankan team of tour leaders has proved very popular with their incredible knowledge, passion and hospitality adding greatly to the experience. There is no better way to experience Sri Lankan culture than letting a local leader show you around their country. For this trip, we have a tour leader throughout plus local guides on the hiking days.

Land Only Itinerary

Day 1
Adventure starts in Kandy

Begin in the lakeside city of Kandy. In the central highlands, wrapped by verdant hills and considered the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, it’s the ideal place to start our Pekoe Trail adventure.

At 6pm, say ayubowan to your tour leader and fellow travellers at our hotel, where we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

That’s followed by an orientation tour around the city, before your tour leader ensures a big Sri Lankan welcome by arranging dinner.

Want to explore Colombo? Secure pre-tour hotel nights through your sales representative.

Accommodation: Hotel Suisse Kandy (or similar)

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2
Hike Stage 1 of the Pekoe Trail: Hanthana to Galaha
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Our hiking begins today, though not before we set the scene with a visit to the Ceylon Tea Museum. Within the old Hanthana Tea Factory (a 15-minute drive from the hotel), the four-floor museum dives deep into the history of tea production in the central highlands, providing a fascinating backstory to our adventures ahead.

The museum is also the start point of the Pekoe Trail, so it’s here we set off to walk Stage 1. This relatively easy stretch is an excellent warm-up for our days ahead, a scenic hike through tea estates and patches of forest with views over Kandy Valley.

Reaching Galaha, the end of Stage 1, we take a transfer (1hr 15min) back to our hotel for a chance to relax.

Accommodation: Hotel Suisse Kandy (or similar)

Distance covered: 8mi (13km)

Ascent: 1,762ft (537m); Descent: 1,542ft (470m); Activity hours: 4

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3
Walk Stage 2 to Loolkandura • Visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Pick up where we left off yesterday, driving back to Galaha to begin Stage 2. Today’s hike can be broken into two. The first section takes us to Deltota, through the scenic Deltota Estate to the hill country town of Deltota itself, which has a lively market and green mosque.

The second section runs through an old pine forest and another tea estate before reaching an abandoned village. Having walked 6mi (10km), we hit the Loolecondera Estate, where we find the cottage of Scottish tea planet James Taylor, who introduced tea farming to Sri Lanka.

Finishing in Loolkandura, we take a transfer (1hr 30min) back to Kandy for a late lunch.

After, we visit the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the most important Buddhist relic in Sri Lanka. The Tooth of Buddha was taken from the funeral pyre in 543 BCE and only found its way to Sri Lanka in the fourth century CE.

Accommodation: Hotel Suisse Kandy (or similar)

Distance covered: 9mi (15km)

Ascent: 2,799ft (853m); Descent: 1,673ft (510m); Activity hours: 5

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4
Scenic train ride to Watagoda • Hike Stage 6: Watagoda to Kotagala

Sri Lanka has some of the most scenic train journeys in the world, and we experience this today, enjoying a three-hour ride from Kandy to Watagoda. If the train schedules change (or the train is significantly delayed) we may drive instead to ensure there is time to complete our walk.

Stage 6 of the trail starts from Watagoda railway station, so we begin hiking immediately. The route takes us past highland lakes, through classic tea trails and to the Holyrood Estate. We also cross small villages and railway lines as we head to Talawakelle, the hub of the Dimbula tea planting district, stopping for lunch en route.

Ending in Kotagala, it’s just a 15-minute transfer to our next hotel in Hatton.

Accommodation: Daynish Rock Bungalow (or similar)

Distance covered: 9mi (14km)

Ascent: 1,745ft (532m); Descent: 2,057ft (627m); Activity hours: 4hr 30min

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5
Hike Stage 7: Kotagala to Norwood • Optional nighttime ascent of Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak)
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Returning to Kotagala, we pick up the trail to hike Stage 7. Our route takes us through deep tea country, passing the colonial-era Chrystler’s Farm Tea Factory. We climb a hill for views over the hill town of Hatton, visit Singamalai Lake, which provides drinking water for the surrounding regions, and gaze over Castlereagh Reservoir, a picturesque body of water considered one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets.

We return to our hotel after reaching Norwood and have the rest of the day to relax.

From the full moon of December to the full moon of May, you have the option of joining the many pilgrims hiking up Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) tonight.

Those interested are picked up around midnight and transferred (1hr 30min) to the base of the peak. From here, it’s a four-hour climb (3,208ft/978m) to the top for sunrise. Overall, the hike is around 6mi (10km) and you will lose a night’s sleep, but sharing the path with pilgrims and the excitement of the hike will be a highlight of the adventure.

Accommodation: Daynish Rock Bungalow (or similar)

Distance covered: 11mi (17km)

Ascent: 1,683ft (513m); Descent: 2,014ft (614m); Activity hours: 5

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 6
Hike Stage 10: Dayagama to Horton Plains
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

After breakfast, we transfer (1hr 30min) to Dayagama to tackle Stage 10. At the end of the Agarapatana Valley, this village is one of the most remote in the tea country, a special chance to see a part of Sri Lanka few ever visit.

Our route takes us along wide tea trails and into dense foliage, and we enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. It ends in the cloud forest of Horton Plains and we transfer (1hr 30min) to our next hotel.

Accommodation: Bandarawela Hotel (or similar)

Distance covered: 10mi (16km)

Ascent: 3,225ft (983m); Descent: 709ft (216m); Activity hours: 5

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7
Summit Kirigalpotta, Sri Lanka’s second highest peak • Horton Plains highlights walk
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

It’s a walking day today, but not on the Pekoe Trail, as we take the opportunity to explore two incredible trails in Horton Plains.

First, we hop on the train for another scenic ride, this time a 30-minute journey to the village of Ohiya. After a short transfer to the trailhead, we begin our hike up Kirigalpotta, the highest trekkable mountain in Sri Lanka.

Our trail winds through mystical cloud forest to the windy summit. On a clear day, we’re rewarded with panoramic views, although more often the summit is cloaked in mist, giving it an ethereal beauty.

A delightful picnic will be waiting for you at the base; if we’re lucky, we may spot sambar deer grazing in the distance, a common yet special sight.

After, we embark on a circular trail, which takes in the highlights of Horton Plains, including the cascades of Baker’s Falls and Chimney Falls, plus the beautiful viewpoints of the Great World’s End and Mini World’s End.

At the end of this adventurous day, catch a transfer (1hr 30min) back to our hotel to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s adventures.

Accommodation: Bandarawela Hotel (or similar)

Distance covered: 12mi (20km)

Ascent: 1,312ft (400m); Descent: 1,312ft (400m); Activity hours: 7

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 8
Return to the Pekoe Trail for stages 13 and 14

We’re back on the Pekoe Trail today, driving 30 minutes to Haputale, where we hike Stage 13 to St Catherine’s. This scenic route takes us through cool, humid forest reserve, before an uphill climb along tea trails and onto paths with views across the valley.

Reaching the tea plantation workers’ village of St Catherine’s, we begin Stage 14 – a wonderful insight into the lives of the local people, allowing us to see tea pickers at work. Our route takes us past vegetable plots, eucalyptus forest and along the edge of a plateau, where we wander past village homes.

Arriving in Makulella, we catch a 30-minute transfer to our hotel in Ella.

Accommodation: O2 Ella (or similar)

Distance covered: 15mi (24km)

Ascent: 4,383ft (1,336m); Descent: 4,974ft (1,516m); Activity hours: 7

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 9
Tackle stages 15 and 16: Makulella via Ella to Demodara
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Tackle two more stages today, returning to yesterday’s end point for the beginning of Stage 15. Our route begins at a Buddhist temple in Ella, heading through eucalyptus forest, tea bushes and jungle patches as we climb to the top of Ella Rock. From the top, admire a wonderful view of Ella Gap, Little Adam’s Peak, and the town of Ella.

After lunch in Ella, we head back on the trail, this time for Stage 16 to Demodara. One of the shortest and most popular stages on the trail, it takes us through tea plantations and past the Nine Arches Bridge (also known as the Bridge in the Sky), which we can admire from several viewpoints today.

Completing the stage, we return (15 minutes) by road to Ella. If there’s enough time after the walk, you could take the scenic train instead (ticket not included, 2,000 rupees/US$6.70, subject to train schedule).

Accommodation: O2 Ella (or similar)

Distance covered: 12mi (19km)

Ascent: 2,428ft (740m); Descent: 3,583ft (1,092m); Activity hours: 6

Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Bid farewell to Ella and transfer (2hr 30min) to the small-yet-lively town of Udapusellawa near Nuwara Eliya.

Here, we begin Stage 21, the second to last stage of the Pekoe Trail. Our route takes us along tea trails, through an area also known for cultivating crops including carrot and leeks. There should be plenty of beautiful valley views today.

Ending in Kandapola, we have a 30-minute transfer to Nuwara Eliya, where we enjoy lunch and the rest of the day to relax.

Accommodation: Galway Heights (or similar)

Distance covered: 10mi (16km)

Ascent: 3,638ft (1,109m); Descent: 1,516ft (462m); Activity hours: 5hr 30min

Day 11
Hike Stage 22, the final stage, to Pedro Tea Estate • To Colombo
Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Return to Kandapola this morning for the final stage of the Pekoe Trail, and our final hike of the adventure – a bitter-sweet day!

The route wraps around Court Lodge Tea Factory, one of the oldest tea estates in the area, along scenic tea trails through estates and villages – a fitting end to our time in Sri Lanka’s beautiful tea region.

Finishing at the Pedro Tea Estate, we drive (five hours) to Colombo, ready for our flights home tomorrow.

Accommodation: Ramada Colombo (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 12

Food & Drink

Allow about 4,500 rupees (US$15) per day for lunch and dinner.

You can eat out very cheaply in Sri Lanka and your tour leader provides recommendations for where to eat locally; however, the options may not always be suited to larger groups.

Some locations you stay may have limited local restaurant choice, in which case meals will be at the hotel. Hotel meals are generally buffets; the majority offer an à la carte menu, but service can be slow. Where suitable, your tour leader will be happy to arrange a shuttle transfer into the local town or, if you prefer to be more independent, take a tuk tuk or taxi. Your tour leader can help recommend some good places to eat.

Vegetarians are well catered for but please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note, the availability of certain products is minimal or non-existent in Sri Lanka. For example, wheat- or dairy-free options outside of hotels are limited. Please be prepared for this and you may need to bring these from home. Spicier food can be avoided easily and lots of the hotels will serve Western options alongside traditional food.

Transport

We use an air-conditioned minibus for transfers.

Weather & Seasonality

Generally, you should expect rain at some time but with plenty of sunshine. The temperatures drop as we go higher into the hills where daytime temperatures are 15C-25C (59F-77F) and night temperatures will be cooler (about 10C/50F minimum) and a warmish fleece will be needed.

What To Take

Essential Equipment

  • Sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle/water bladder (also known as a hydration pack/CamelBak, which are useful for rehydrating on the go)
  • Light casual clothing for trekking and for evenings (light cotton or quick-wicking clothing is best for the walking due to the high humidity)
  • Warm sweater/fleece for evenings
  • Lightweight walking boots
  • Lightweight thin walking socks with wicking properties
  • Light waterproof jacket
  • Umbrella
  • Swimwear
  • Hand washing gel, wet wipes
  • Torch (flashlight) – a red light doesn’t attract bugs as a white light does
  • Insect repellent
  • Walking/trekking pole(s)
  • Backpack (approximately 10-15 litres)
  • Leech socks (these can be hired locally for around 4,000 rupees/US$13.50, but must be requested at least two weeks before the trip starts)

Clothing should cover shoulders and be on or below the knee, especially when visiting temples. Women should always dress conservatively to avoid unwanted attention and not to cause offence; vests, tight-fitting trousers (pants), short skirts and short shorts are not recommended.

We recommend that your main luggage consists of one soft kitbag. This will be carried in the back-up vehicle. You will need a small backpack for your daily requirements.

Practical Information

Visa

Sri Lanka

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally need a visa (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. Travellers from most countries can obtain a 30-day ETA (US$50) at www.eta.gov.lk. We strongly recommend that you do this prior to travel to avoid any complications and delays on arrival. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

Local customs and laws: You should be aware of local laws and customs in Sri Lanka (see: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/sri-lanka/local-laws-and-customs). The mistreatment of Buddhist images and artefacts is an offence; please note, people have been refused entry to Sri Lanka because of visible tattoos of Buddha.

Vaccinations and Health

Sri Lanka

There are no required vaccinations. However, recommended vaccinations include tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies, tuberculosis and typhoid. You will also need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission or transiting for more than 12 hours through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Please confirm with your doctor or travel clinic.

The risk of malaria is slight but you may wish to consult your doctor or travel clinic for further advice. Additionally, dengue fever, a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, is a known risk in places visited. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available; the best form of prevention is to take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

For detailed health and vaccination advice, visit:

Local Time

Sri Lanka's time zone: Asia/Colombo (UTC +05:30)

Electricity

Sri Lanka's electricity: Plug type G (three rectangular pins) – 230V, 50Hz – is by far the most common type in Sri Lanka. The electricity supply is not 100 percent reliable but is usually only off for short periods

Hike Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail

Money

Sri Lanka's currency: All foreign passport holders can make payments for purchases in the local currency, Sri Lankan rupees (LKR). This is applicable to hotels, restaurants, shops and for any other services. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and most established shops. If you wish to exchange any cash upon arrival into Sri Lankan rupees, it is advisable to exchange British pounds, euros or US dollars upon arrival at Colombo Airport where authorised bank money exchanges are open 24-hours a day. Hotels can change money as well, but the rates will probably not be favourable. Your Tour Leader will be happy to direct you to the appropriate exchange services if you wish to change money during the trip. You are no longer required to produce your receipt of foreign exchange when making payments in Sri Lankan rupees, as was previously the case. However, we suggest you retain receipts of foreign exchange which will help should you wish to change back any unused rupees at the time of departure.

ATM Availability

There are ATMs in many of the main towns, including Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Colombo, with Visa, Mastercard and American Express widely accepted. There is often a 3%-4% fee on top of your withdrawals. It’s worth informing your bank before departure that you are travelling to Sri Lanka and carry the relevant telephone number with you in case they put a block on your card.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

For small purchases, particularly at local shops and markets, cash is generally preferred and easier for transactions than credit cards.

Allow at least 2,200 Sri Lankan rupees (US$6) per day for personal expenditures such as small souvenirs and soft drinks. Some sites may charge a small fee for camera use.

Tipping

Tipping is part of the culture in Sri Lanka.

Tipping kitty: Tipping can be an awkward affair, especially when you’re in an unfamiliar country. As such, your tour leader will offer to arrange and look after a tipping kitty, which will be used to tip hotel staff, local guides, and other support staff used on the trip (optional excursions are not included in the group kitty). Your tour leader will suggest how much to contribute, but it is usually about 16,500 rupees (approximately US$50) per group member. At any time during the trip, your tour leader will happily show you an account of how the kitty is being distributed.

Tour leader and transfer crew: These are not included in the tipping kitty and are at your own discretion. If you wish to show your appreciation, our recommendation is as follows:

  • Driver and assistant: around 650-950 rupees (US$2-US$3) per group member, per day
  • Tour leader: around 1,100-1,600 rupees (US$4-US$5) per group member, per day

Where possible, please try to tip in the local currency.

Sustainability and Impact

As a certified B Corp, we’re on a mission to improve our social and environmental impact across all our adventures.

We do this through our innovative Thriving Nature, Thriving People plan.

This ‘nature positive’ approach is designed to help nature and communities thrive in harmony though practical solutions, such as reducing carbon and waste on our trips, supporting conservation projects through the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation, and rewilding 100 square metres for every Exodus traveller.
