Experiencing Pura Vida adventure in Costa Rica

Just back from this brilliant holiday – we’ve had an exceptional time exploring Costa Rica’s flora and fauna with plenty of adventure and activities to keep us entertained over the two week holiday. Our group spotted at least 125 different species of birds, animals and other creatures, from colourful butterflies and birds of every shape and size to adorable sloths, from poisonous frogs to killer tarantulas and scorpions, from humpback whales to dolphins and flying fish. Our tour of Costa Rica took in wet, dry and damp rain forests, incredible scenery, amazing sights and sounds, very rainy rain, beautiful hot sunshine, captivating night tours including a magical, breath-taking experience watching baby turtles hatching and making their first journey out to sea, wildlife walks and hikes, plus fabulous food from pineapple plantations and organic farms. Other activities included flying through the rain forest by zip line, tubing down rapids and horse riding through a wildlife rich ranch, basking in volcanic thermal springs under the stars. We added in a couple of optional adventures: surf lessons at the beach and a coffee, chocolate and sugar cane tour at the base of the Arenal volcano. Our excellent tour leader, Mayer Jimenez brought expert wildlife and bird knowledge to the holiday, a huge bonus for our group. This holiday comes highly recommended.

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on a beach at night in the pitch dark, watching tiny baby turtles no bigger than a satsuma emerge from their sandy nest and making their way down the beach towards the sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Mayer was exceptional. His extensive knowledge of flora, fauna and birdlife really made our trip even better as we spotted more than 125 different species.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Rain forests are damp! Don't unpack anything you don't need: keep as much stuff as possible zipped up in your waterproof duffle bag or suitcase, including all clothes you aren't currently wearing. Quick-dry clothing is a great idea. And if you don't want to put on a soggy swimsuit, bring at least 3 sets with you, and watershoes if you plan on going tubing.

Glorious location, great walks and a fabulous hotel

We took this trip in early September, the weather turned out to be very hot (mostly 30-32 degrees) but the walks were still fine for most of the group and were really well selected with varied and interesting walking every day. I would say, though, that a fair rating would be ‘moderate to hard’ as each walk had some challenging sections, especially in the heat. The scenery of the Alpujarra is glorious, different to any other mountains we have walked in and very beautiful. Our guide Dan was also excellent, really well informed, dryly funny and considerate to all members of the group. Finally a word for the hotel in Berchules – it was absolutely fabulous! Csilla is a wonderful hostess, so friendly and welcoming and Alejandro is a terrific chef, evening meals were a delight and the breakfasts and packed lunches were very generous. The setting of the hotel, at the head of the Berchules valley, is glorious – one of my favourite memories of the trip was just sitting on the terrace before breakfasts and suppers, chatting over drinks with our walking buddies. I thoroughly recommend this trip.

Sitting relaxed on the terrace with new friends and out lovely hosts, drinking in the fabulous scenery (and the local wine).

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dan was great, full of information and humour and really careful for the well-being of all the group members.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walking poles (which we didn't bring but others did) were helpful for balance on some steeper walk sections. Do follow the advice on water bottles too. Proper walking boots essential.

Another Great Adventure with Exodus

In my opinion, the success of these trips depends mainly on 3 factors – the itinerary and logistics, the guide and the fellow group participants. For me, the three were excellent. As always, the attention to detail from Exodus’ side was impeccable from the choice of hotels to the choice of snacks in between rides. Yes this is a fast moving full on trip as clearly laid out in the trip notes so if you like lie ins and lazing on the beach type of holidays think again! But to see so much of Vietnam in 2 weeks this is expected.

Most Inspirational Moment

The exhilarating downhill 30 km ride through beautiful scenery, the snorkelling around Whale Island and the first glimpse of the islands whilst cruising into Halong Bay!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tung was magnificent! He did his job exceptionally well without being too pushy. He was there to help all of us until the moment we got on the plane back. Great sense of humour and good knowledge of the country’s history. Very streetwise too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you love cycling and would like to visit Vietnam then this is the way to do it. Cycling is generally easy except for a few days where there are a couple of long hills. Some fitness is required here. Also, one needs to be calm when cycling in traffic as you have to negotiate and share the road with the million scooters and cars! All part of the fun.

First hand education in the history and religions of the area we know as the Holy Land

An action packed entirely fascinating FULL week in Jordan, Palestine. Great company, great local food, excellent Group Lead/Tour Guide. Much much better than I expected. Felt very safe in Jordan too.

Most Inspirational Moment

The realisation that the history of the three significant Abrahamic religions surrounded me in this region. I went to see Petra, The Red and Dead Seas, I came away with so much more. Roman Jerash, Mount Nebu and Moses, the Baptism site of Jesus Christ no less, (optional extra, everyone took).

Thoughts on Group Leader

This is our third Exodus trip and as with the two previous it is the Group Leader who made it an exceptional experience. Amer, a warm, eloquent Jordanian with four relevant degrees brought the history, religions and politics of the region to life with clear chronological explanations drawn from the sites we visited. You felt totally confident in his care, bus broken down near Wadi Rum, replacement arrives within 20 mins - impressive for the middle of nowhere.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you're transiting through Heathrow be prepared for very lengthy delays, not quite as bad as Manchester, but pretty appalling still, with little care for passenger wellbeing. Try to drink plenty on the plane as there is nothing for the couple of hours it takes to transit from one terminal to the other via yet another security check.

That was simply brilliant; thank you!

Every aspect of our trip exceeded our expectations. Qatar Airways was a very smooth service, and the moment Tung met us at Saigon airport, we felt we were on the holiday of a lifetime; this view never changed. Our only concern is how can we possibly find a comparable cycling – or any other – holiday?!

Most Inspirational Moment

I don't think I can narrow down one moment; every day brought incredible inspiration. It is too obvious to talk about things like Whale Island; the lunch stops at family homes were just as amazing in different ways. The scenery, the villages and cities, the people and the food were all quite incredible.

Thoughts on Group Leader

There cannot possibly be a better group leader than Tung Hoang. His care, attention to detail, sense of humour, and engagement with every member of the trip were just amazing; I think we all said goodbye to a friend for life after just a fortnight. And his brilliant support crew were perfect too. Thank you, Tung and the team! (And thank you, Exodus, for allocating them to us!)

Advice for Potential Travellers

You need a holder (possibly a pocket!) for your telephone; don't bother with any other bikke carrier attachments. Cycling refuels were every hour so there is no need for gels etc. If you were really worried, carry a waterproof but even the rain is joyously warm and cooling.

Brilliant trip led by an outstanding guide!

A wonderful week’s walking in beautiful surroundings and great company with the outstanding Jose as our guide. The weather was perfect and the accommodation clean, homely and comfortable. Raquel provided delicious three course dinners most evenings, with Jose cooking us a huge paella one evening. He also made us the most amazing sandwiches to take for lunch. Jose grew up in this area and conveyed his love for it, whilst providing so many interesting facts about the countryside we were passing through. I can’t recommend this trip highly enough- one of the best I have ever done with Exodus.

What a Trip!

Before I left my girlfriend was teasing me about spending two weeks camping with creepy crawlies and having to eat tinned spaghetti hoops every night. In truth it could not have been more different. Kieron the camp leader was great, tents were put up for us, beers were cold, the food was healthy, tasty and home cooked and exceeded all expectations. The tents were modern and roomy, I paid extra for a single but they are more than big enough for two. Campsites were good and the mat, pillow and sleeping bag I rented were all just fine. We were really well looked after. The trek was superb too – I’m a really pleased I chose to do the full thing.

Most Inspirational Moment

I was surprised at how big, dramatic and beautiful the Alps are. I got some great photos. I also really enjoyed the group atmosphere and I loved the outdoorsy side to the whole trip. It felt healthy.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mike was amazing! Made every member of the group feel included, had tonnes of knowledge about the area to impart and was all round a positive person to have leading us for the two weeks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I recommend walking poles and a steady pace

Journey report

Jordan Itinerary was good but an extra day in Petra is definitely a necessary consideration. There is a lot to see in Petra and to fit it all into one day is a struggle to achieve in one day! Overnight in the desert was one of the highlights of the trip. Rather than visit yet another ruin between Petra and the Dead Sea was too tiring and a blur, we all just wanted to get to the holiday inn to relax and make the most of the resort rather than rush to get into the Dead Sea and again rush to get ready for dinner – we didn’t need to be ruled by time at this stage and lost the enjoyment. The guide was knowledgeable but not as informed as he could have been, perhaps a few more facts should have been forthcoming. Crosssing the border from Jordan to Palestine was ok, however the Jordanian guide had no knowledge of what actually happens, presumably your product department have done the journey and are able to brief the jordan office. On arriving on the Palestinian side of the border there was no sign of our new guide, one of our group called the Jordanian guide for assistance,it transpired the Israeli guide was delayed coming through security – surely sufficient time should have been given knowing there are security checks. Palestine An enlightening journey through Jericho and Bethlehem. It would have been interesting to have included more details about Banksy’s art and hotel decoration on the Palestinian side of the wall and had more time to visit the hotel. Israel Jerusalem was chaotic, visiting the Holy sites was a challenge, whilst it is out of Exodus control a complaint to the Israeli tourist office might make a difference. We will be putting forward a complaint ourselves, it seems the Israelis change the rules on a whim which is unacceptable, the Holy sites belong to the world not to any one country. Haifa was a complete and utter waste of time, please remove from the itinerary and don’t waste time which could have been spent in old Jaffa and Tel Aviv which is much more interesting.

Overnight in the desert to a five star hotel on the Dead Sea. Jerusalem without the chaos.

Jordan guide is still finding his way and needs more knowledge. Israel guide very informative.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you have any required medications as quite expensive in Jordan and Israel. - Imodium, paracetamol, strepsils etc. Object to the Haifa trip.
