SNOWSHOEING IN THE DOLOMITES

Wonderful scenery and walking combined with an excellent hotel and a first class group leader. Terrible handling of our transfer upon arrival though (see below).

Most Inspirational Moment

Getting through some rather poor and nasty weather (and missing lunch as a result) to find a refuge open mid afternoon serving hot meals and gluhwein. We felt like we had earned it!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Met Alejandro before in Tuscany so expected him to be excellent again. He was. Great group leader out on the walks and good company in the evenings too. Very knowledgable and ensured that everyone in the group was catered for.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

At the great age of 65 this was the first organised tour i have ever experienced. I was a wild child of the 60s, an independent woman traveller and I begin to see now , a bit of a travel snob. Exodus gave me a new and wondereful experiernce . A chance to squeeze so many sights, sounds and so much knowledge into a trim 2 weeks only possible because of immaculate organisation anf the personal services of a very warm and welcoming local guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being part of a local ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth was a privilige mde possible by our local guide. The flash of vermilion and emerald  birds and the wonder of a leopard in the distance at Yala .

Thoughts on Group Leader

warm welcoming and always available

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be open to fellow travellers who may be very different

CYCLING THROUGH RAJASTHAN

A brilliant trip made special by the group leader and of course the group members. The contrast of city versus rural cycling and daily life is imense but equally attractive in their own way. They cycling is not overly arduous and the chai stops are rewarding and refreshing. Visting a range of attractions (temples, forts, national parks) gives a good feel and overview of Rajasthan.

Most Inspirational Moment

For me it was the cycling through the countryside and seeing the daily life of folk. Also listening to Sanjay and Harish talk about their country with immense pride and enthusiam. Very informative.

Thoughts on Group Leader

simply superb. Enthusiatic, calm, curtious, effecient, responsive, organised, interested...every thing you would want in a leader for this trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do some cycling at home, bring some warm clothes if travelling in December/January. If you like spicey food, ask for Indian spicey when ordering. Do not expect a lot of time to your self. The itinerary is a full and there is little time for shopping or strolling around the towns. Do not expect Internet even if advertised in the hotels.

THE INCA TRAIL - Moonstone Trek

Originally we wanted to do the Classic Inca Trail, however because Exodus run out of lincences for this particular trip we did a variation of this trek: Moonstone Trek, which is much higher that the Inca Trail. This did not put us off and actually was better as we went on very remote, secluded paths that are not part of the massive tourist highway. During the whole trip it was only 6 of us + leader + cooks + sherpas and few local people that we past occasionally. PERFECT for those who want to experience the beauty of mighty Andes, beautiful nature, make new friends and clear mind from daily life! You still get to see all the good places including ending the trek in Machu Picchu! We came back very happy and whatever we spent was definitely worth it all!

Most Inspirational Moment

Camping in the middle of nowhere, getting up at undecent hours in the morning, walking all day and at the end of the day surprising ourseves with a happy thought that tomorrow is yet another day we will discover something new! You surprise yourself how far you can push yourself!

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had two leaders, both Juan Manuel and Jesus were great, looked after the whole group at all times, checking whether we adjust well to the altidue. They have paced the trek fantasticly making sure no one is left behind and we stick as a group. They are both experienced leaders and showed us trully amazing places!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a good sleeping bag, clothes for every weather condition, camera and good humor! Personally I found walking poles a saver on gravel, steep slopes and while jumping through the river. Won't hurt if you pack set of cards, we found playing UNO a great entertainment in the evenings!

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

Great trip, with loads to see and do. As others haven mentioned, it’s a little front-loaded with the cycling. The Thailand part is mostly cycling, which is great. It was very hot when we went – over 40c, but the cycling is flat so the distances aren’t too taxing. Of course you don’t have to cycle all of every day and at any given point, there was someone taking the van option on our trip. The stops during the cycling were a little too frequent and a little too long for me, but other opinions are available! The Cambodia section is split between the Angkor temples and  Phnom Penh, with not a lot of cycling anywhere. The temples are exceptional – I would maybe have a liked a little more time at some of them, but you can’t have everything.  Our group opted for the Tonle Sap Lake trip over cycling. In hindsight I would definitely go the for the cycling – the floating village is not nice and the later trip in Vietnam to the floating market is a much better experience. The Phnom Penh section is a chance to relax a little, but I would have liked a little cycling – outside the capital maybe? (Phnom Penh is very busy on the roads!).Vietnam is awesome and the cycling superb. Village life is the highlight and the homestay is also excellent. Many (but not all) people on our trip only took their anti-materials for the few days we were cycling the Mekong, rather than the entire 2 weeks plus. I had some fairly funky dreams in the run up to this part, which I put down to my Malarials!

Most Inspirational Moment

The highlights for me were the temples of Angkor and the rural cycling in Vietnam.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good. We had two leaders for the Thailand and Cambodia sections, then exchanged our Cambodian leader for a Vietnamese one when we crossed the border. All of them were excellent.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Only two bits of advice really... be prepared (mentally as much as anything) for a) the heat and b) The front loaded cycling. Oh, and I’d opt for the cycling in Cambodia over the lake trip.

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

Cycling is a nice way to discover these 3 countries. The highlights are Angkor Vat and the delta of the mekong river.

Most Inspirational Moment

Angkor Vat is such an amazing place

Thoughts on Group Leader

All of our group leaders were amazing, they all had a very good knowledge about their countries

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for the heat and humidity

MONGOLIAN ADVENTURE

Good outdoor, wild country trip. Attended the Naadam Festival and came away feeling that there is not a huge amount of culture but that is to be expected from traditionally nomadic peoples. Museums have a rather unloved feeling about them.

Most Inspirational Moment

The great open plains. The hospitality of the nomadic people and the camel's cheese, salted tea and soured mare's milk that they offerred us.The Mongolian way of re-commencing religion/Buddhism in their country after Soviet rule.

Thoughts on Group Leader

She was absolutely lovely. Did her best at all times.English skills required polishing up.She didn't have very much control over the drivers and we kept losing the other trucks (we were in a convoy of 3 trucks) and had to double back etc. Also, got lost in the Gobi desert twice! Ended up having extremely long drives of 12hrs and 14hrs on 2 of our travel days. She didn't want to worry us and told us that everything was fine when it was obvious that it really wasn't. It would have been better if she had told us the truth and we could have helped her look out for landmarks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Beware of pickpockets at the Naadam Festival in UB. They are particularly aggressive and use the slash (yes, with a knife) and grab method. The view in the stadium from where tourists are seated is not ideal. We couldn't really see anything happenning in the centre of the stadium where the opening ceremony was held. Try to catch a festival outside of UB and you will get a much closer and rewarding experience.Bring travel sickness medication if you suffer from it as the truck rides are rough, bumpy and very, very long.Food isn't bad just boring. Be prepared for lots and lots of coleslaw and boiled mutton. Condiments and lots of beer will assist in washing it all down.

FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

Absolutely wonderful scenery – sparkling snow covered trees and permanent twilight give it a magical feel. The activities were a lot of fun even at minus thirty and good clothing and equipment is all provided. It’s certainly laid back and anyone can have a go at most things if they don’t mind falling over a few times. There is plenty of free time on this trip, so make the most of the sauna, the mini hot tub and the (costly) optional activities or come prepared with uno and a good book. The cabins have brilliant underfloor heating, the food is tasty and plentiful (lunch is €11 extra each day) and the team is very friendly.

Most Inspirational Moment

The enthusiasm and strength of the husky teams was awesome. I'll never forget the quiet whisper of the sledge and the sense of wonder as we sailed along the trails in the remote forest under the pink skies.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: KVITAVATN

An exceptional trip with inspirational instruction….even for a rank beginner with no skiing experience at all.

Most Inspirational Moment

I had several inspirational moments.  The first was the moment when I first managed to stay upright on skis on the first day, the second was skiing out over Kvitavatn lake, then in turn the moment when I managed to herring bone uphill successfully, to snowplough downhill under control, telemarks to provide better stability, and the first run without an instructor around the ski tracks.  Skiing in a force 9 gale was pretty exhiliarating too!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ilse was amazing.  She is hugely talented, incredibly patient and knows exactly when a word of praise or a word of criticism will be most appropriate.  Several times when I was struggling with something she would pay me a compliment that lifted my mood entirely, equally she never let go something that I was doing badly (pole position for general propulsion mostly!) if she thought I could improve it.  Full of energy and enthusiasm, she was inspirational.Chris was also great - very different in style, he would talk us through an ascent/descent then leave us to make some decisions about how to approach the obstacle so that we had to think independently about what we were doing.  He was never too far away to come back and rescue me from various trees, snow drifts and ski contortions when I managed to hit them but it gave a real sense of achievement when something went well...because you'd done it right.  He picked me up out of more piles of snow than anyone should have to do, but always with a smile.  He was also great when I gave myself a minor injury on the final day, and got me back to the lodge not only in one piece, but cheerful and with a sense of achievement. At the end of the week we were presented with a disc of photos taken for us where quite a few of us were not taking many through a) fear of crushing the camera b) concentration on skiing or c) being in a snow drift, so we have a great record of the week. I cannot rate the leaders highly enough at Kvitavatn and I can't wait to book again for the coming season.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Cross country skiing makes everything hot - don't dress for downhill or you'll bake.  Light layers are a must.  Do take a flask, mittens are a winner and most of all definitely take gaiters and waterproofs if you are a beginner. You will fall over......maybe not as much as me, but you will fall, and staying dry is the key to enjoying your trip.  Take the smallest day pack you can manage (flask, lunch, layer, camera - you don't need much else) to keep your balance under control.  I also took my yak tracks (for gripping ice when walking around) which I found really useful when it got slippery around the Fjellstoge towards the end of the week.  Not falling down off skis was a desirable state of affairs given the opportunities for falling over on skis!Inevitably snow conditions vary (we had a couple of warm and therefore very slippery days) and this can be  a bit frustrating, but the leaders are very good at picking out the best possible activities for the conditions. You'll get a lot out of the trip.

KERALA & TROPICAL INDIA

Beautiful and very varied scenery; great cycling, great food and always something to see.  The traffic is not as daunting as it first seems.

Most Inspirational Moment

Reaching hairpin bend 1 on the Ooty climb and finding out the road still goes up!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Safi was good; could have asked a little more what we wanted eg. getting to the beach and then we had to wait and eat hot chips before we could go for a swim!

Advice for Potential Travellers

From reading some of the other reviews...it's a Moderate-Challenging cycling trip; that means you should be able to ride a bike, some distance, change gears, ride in traffic and, hopefully, not fall off.  The traffic was daunting at first (day 1 returning into Mysore in the dark) but you soon learn that it works, they merge and give way when they need to.
