Trekking in Cuba

Another excellent trekking holiday from Exodus. This trip offers the chance to see a lot of Cuba travelling from one side of the island to the other side and the opportunity to enjoy trekking as well.

Trekking Highlights of Cuba

A fantastic Cuban adventure with a great group of people. We laughed, walked, danced and drank cocktails from West to East and back. Well constructed itinerary, plenty of diversity and still time for relaxation. I felt that the grading was right, all the relevant information is in the Trip Notes re. walking conditions and fitness.

I loved every minute of this trip. We walked through some of the most beautiful countryside, visited many of the main cities, met interesting people and had many new experiences.

Trekking Highlights of Cuba

Overall, this was a great trip. We saw a lot of Cuba, our group was great and got on well, and Cuba is a fascinating country with a lot of very interesting post WW2 history. Cuba is already changing fast and in Havana in particular there seemed to be more tourists than locals - however elsewhere we were often off the beaten track and I really enjoyed that. There was one big negative - I felt that some of the hiking was well beyond a Level 3. I try to avoid extended steep descents and always intended to sit out the 'optional day' (very much the right decision for me), and I found Day 6 (3km of continuous steep descent) too tough to be enjoyable. If you are a good solid "level 2 walker" who occasionally enjoys a Level 3 day, you might find some of this too tough.

Cuba is a fascinating country at an important time in its history. There is some good trekking and interesting cities. Live music is everywhere and is a highlight of the holiday. Generally, the accommodation is good, but the food average. Unfortunately, there was a lot of travelling by coach. Overall I was a little disappointed with the holiday and, on balance, would probably not recommend it (see my advice below).

I chose this trip to see as much of the island as possible and to walk in its various lanscapes, even if this did mean some long bus journeys. The trip lived up entirely to my expectations and it was great too to see the colonial architecture, faded though it often was, and to visit some of the historical sites (the visit to the armoured train museum in Santa Clara had been deleted from the current trip notes [though it is mentioned], but we persuaded our guide to take us there anyway). It was good to be able to immerse oneself in the history of the country and to interact with the locals.

Good holiday. Some of the accommodation was not up to standard and some of the group were not fit enough for the grade of holiday.

Wonderful holiday

Great trip and an amazing country! It is sunny, friendly, vibrant with bright colours, music and art, delicious papayas and mangos, pina coladas served in a pint glass, streets full of Rickshaw taxis and palms tree adding to the tropical holiday feel.
