Weather

Throughout the Alps the winter months can bring extended periods of fine, settled weather. From Christmas through to the end of February average daytime temperatures range between +4º and -10º C in the shade. These temperatures can feel surprisingly comfortable, largely because the air is very dry, and you will often be on the move. In periods of unsettled weather the daytime temperature will rise to zero or higher, but it will feel much colder as the air carries much more moisture at these times. At any time local winds can blow, and the resulting wind-chill factor can be significant.

Is this trip for you?

This trip is set at level 4, moderate/challenging. Previous mountain walking experience is necessary along with a good level of fitness. The difficulty and distances covered in this trip depend very much on the snow conditions, however the routes are designed to be possible even in the heaviest snow.

The altitude gain will be around 700 metres on most days. Some of the ascents are quite steep and snowshoes can be removed if necessary. Expect walking time to be approximately 7 hours including breaks plus 1 hour for lunch. The longest days will involve approximately 8 hours of walking. The maximum distance will be roughly 17km in a day.

This trip involves 2 nights in a mountain hut. During this time you will not have access to your main luggage and will have to carry your essentials in a backpack.

Snowshoes are adaptable to fit most trekking boot sizes, however if you wear larger than UK size 12 boots (US13 or EU47) please let us know at the time of booking. We will then be able to confirm if we can provide suitable snowshoes for you.

The drive to Thures from the airport can take over 1.5 hours and is predominantly on winding mountain roads.

Accommodation

Gites and Albergos. Dormitory style accommodation.

We will be sleeping in dorms of up to 8 people with shared bathrooms. Our first two nights are usually spent at Albergo Fontana del Thures, a family run gite in the secluded valley of Thures. This gite is a charming old building with a fireplace and it has a great reputation for providing delicious local cuisine. We then spend the next couple of nights at the remote mountain hut, Capanna Mautino, which is only accessible on foot. At the hut we will be able to fully immerse ourselves in the winter wilderness and enjoy the amazing views from the comfortable living room. For the remainder of the trip we will move onto the quaint Cerveyrette gite, probably the best accommodation of the trip, which also offers great food and a very relaxing environment.
