Land Only Itinerary

Day 1
Adventure starts in Vientiane

Our adventure begins in Vientiane, the capital and largest city in Laos. If you have time after your arrival, you may want to take in the charms of Vientiane – our hotel sits right on the banks of the Mekong.

Around 6pm, say sabai dee (hello) to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead.

Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome by arranging a group dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Want more time in Vientiane? Secure pre-tour hotel nights through your sales representative.

Accommodation: Eastin Hotel Vientiane (or similar)

Day 2
Vientiane sightseeing • Train to Vang Vieng
Discover Laos in Comfort

Get acquainted with the capital on a sightseeing tour after breakfast. Our first stop is Wat Si Saket. Built over five years from 1819, it is the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane and home to almost 7,000 Buddha images. After, visit Pha That Luang, a large, gold-covered Buddhist stupa. Said to enshrine a breastbone of the Buddha, it is the most important religious monument in Laos.

Head to Patuxai, meaning Victory Gate. This large war monument was built between 1957 and 1968 in response to the nation’s struggle against French colonial rule and subsequent conflicts.

After, we take the train (just under an hour) to the mountain-wrapped town of Vang Vieng on the Nam Song River.

Accommodation: Amari Vang Vieng (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3
Kayak on the Nam Song River • Riverside lunch • Free afternoon
Discover Laos in Comfort

Experience the rural beauty of Vang Vieng this morning, kayaking down the Nam Song River. It starts with a ride in a songthaew (a converted truck and an adventure in itself), which takes us to Ban Vieng Sa Mai village. Here, we have a safety briefing from a river guide, before hopping in kayaks for our 6mi (10km) journey.

Along the way, look for the local people working in their riverside gardens, villagers casting their fishing nets, and maybe water buffalo cooling in the waters. After 4.5mi (7km), we pull over for a leisurely riverside lunch surrounded by caves and forest.

After, we complete our kayaking and return to our hotel, where you can enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Accommodation: Amari Vang Vieng (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4
Train to Oudomxay • Discover Tai Lue handicrafts in a private home

We travel (two hours) by train to Oudomxay Province this morning, arriving in Muang Xai, a historic trading town shaped by Lao and Chinese influences.

Here, we visit the 14th-century Phu That Stupa, where our tour leader explains its continuing role in local Buddhist festivals.

After time for lunch, we visit a private home and garden displaying handcrafted dyed-cotton products, plus the golden Phuuthat Stupa, which was built in the 14th century. The visit also gives us the chance to learn about the Tai Lue ethnic group, who are known for their skills with cotton.

A 45-minute transfer then brings us to our forest resort in Nam Kat Yorla Pa. In the evening, the perfect option is to retire for a refreshing beverage and watch the sun set over the Mekong River or enjoy the many resort amenities – perhaps treating yourself to a massage.

Day 5
Nam Kat Waterfall, jungle hiking and sky bridges
Discover Laos in Comfort

Journey deep into the wilderness today, exploring with a combination of jungle hiking, walking along sky bridges, and discovering hidden waterfalls. We start at the tour information centre mid-morning, followed by a short transfer in a private vehicle to Nam Kat Waterfall.

Take time to appreciate the beautiful surroundings before we follow a natural trail through the jungle and walk across 13 sky bridges (rope and wood suspension bridges in the forest canopy). They’re not too high off the ground and easy to cross but a ground-level option is available for those uneasy with heights.

After, the private vehicle drives us back to our resort where we can relax and enjoy the various amenities, like the pool and spa.

Day 7
Enjoy views from Phu Si temple • Slow boat to Pak Ou Caves • Tour Luang Prabang
Discover Laos in Comfort

Head out after an early breakfast to visit Phu Si temple before the crowds arrive and take in superb views of the Mekong River and the city from the hilltop. The hike is an easy 10-15 minutes up 300 steps, offering increasingly stunning views.

Returning down, we then set off on a two-hour slow boat trip to visit the Pak Ou Caves, cut out of the limestone banks that line the Mekong. These caves are filled with thousands of Buddha images brought by local villagers as a sign of their devotion. After about an hour, we return to Luang Prabang.

This afternoon, enjoy a sightseeing tour of Luang Prabang, a World Heritage site and the former capital of Laos. It takes us to Wat Xiengthong, a Buddhist temple that’s arguably one of the most spectacular in the country.

We also visit the Royal Palace National Museum. Also known as the Golden Hall, it was Laos’ Royal Palace before the 1975 revolution and become a national museum in 1995. The estate contains several buildings, including the Royal Barge Shelter, a conference hall, and Haw Pha Bang (an ornate pavilion) that houses the standing Buddha statue called Prabang. There is also the royal garage, which houses the royal car collection, and an art gallery behind that.

This evening, there is an optional visit to see the Royal Ballet troupe performed Phra-Lak Phra-Lam, the Lao version of the sacred poem, the Ramayana. Performances are limited to Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday most weeks.

Accommodation: The Luang Say Residence (or similar)

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 8
See monks receive alms at dawn • Visit Kuang Si waterfall • Free afternoon with optional activities

For those up at dawn, there is the chance to witness the daily parade of saffron-robed monks receiving alms (known as Sai Bat). After, we return to our hotel for breakfast before we drive (just under an hour) through small villages and hilly terrains to Kuang Si Falls – known for its three-tiered waterfalls and milky turquoise waters. Electric shuttles transport us from the main parking area through the village and to the falls, where the winding forest trail leads you to the pristine turquoise pools of the waterfall, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim (changing rooms are available).

After Kuang Si Waterfall, the group return to Luang Prabang. The afternoon is free to enjoy a few interesting optional activities, such as a natural tie-dying workshop, a chance to meet the residents of the MandaLao Elephant Conservation project, or an afternoon cooking class to learn the secrets of Lao cuisine. Booking these before the tour begins is highly recommended due to limited availability. See the Extra Expenses section of the Trip Notes for more details.

Food & Drink

The food on this trip is a real highlight. The national staple of Laos is sticky rice, which is served with all meals and is often used as a scooping device to pick food up as meals are traditionally eaten with hands and not utensils. Noodle dishes are common and the sweet offerings tend to focus around the abundance of fresh fruit available – be sure to seek out the mangosteen, the sweet segments are a local favourite and unlike any other fruit.

Western food is readily available almost everywhere. Vegetarians are well catered for but please inform us before departure of any special dietary requests. Please note, in Southeast Asia the availability of certain specialised products for restricted diets, eg gluten-free or dairy-free, is minimal or non-existent and we strongly recommend you bring these items from home.

Transport

We primarily use trains to travel, sitting in comfortable second-class carriages with short journeys between one and three hours. On some occasions, we also transfer by private air-conditioned minibus.

Weather & Seasonality

For most of the year, the weather is hot and humid throughout with daytime temperatures of 28C-34C (82F-93F). It is a little cooler at nights and can be cold from November to March in the mountains with temperatures occasionally dropping as low as 10C (50F).

What To Take

Essential Equipment

We recommend travelling with a holdall/medium-size suitcase as these are more suitable for the train journeys. Pack light, there are regular opportunities to get laundry done locally at a very affordable price.

  • Casual clothes. As it is generally hot and humid, light cotton clothing is recommended. It can often be cold in the mountains in northern Laos between November and early March and you should bring a warm jacket if you are travelling at that time, for the evenings/early mornings. You are expected to cover your legs (to the ankle) and arms (to the elbow) during visits to some temples and palaces.
  • Long-sleeve shirts and light trousers (pants) help to keep mosquitoes off during the evenings
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho/umbrella
  • Swimwear
  • Insect repellent containing DEET (non-aerosol)
  • Sunscreen (non-aerosol) and sun hat
  • Swimwear

Train travel: You will travel on the Laos–China Railway between several destinations. There is airport-style security at Laos railway stations, including manual bag inspection and luggage screening.

The following items are prohibited to take in your luggage (main or hand-carry) while travelling on the trains. We recommend you do not pack the following as they will be removed and disposed of:

  • Aerosols and flammables: Hairspray, aerosol deodorants/insect repellent, paint, lighter fluid, and lighter refills.
  • Vapes and liquids: Electronic cigarettes (vapes), related liquids, and large bottles of liquids.
  • Sharp objects: Knives (including fruit knives), scissors, tweezers, and multi-tools.
  • Dangerous goods: Explosives, fireworks, corrosive substances, toxic materials, and compressed gases.

For more information on prohibited items, please visit this link: https://laostrainticket.com/lcr-prohibited-items/

Water included: Plastic bottles are a big issue in many countries where recycling isn’t yet widely available; they often end up in landfill or get burned. Both processes are harmful to the environment and we would like to reduce our impact here. For your trip, we provide an alternative to single-use plastic bottles to reduce the plastic used. This means that safe drinking water will be available throughout; all you need to do is bring a bottle to refill along the way. Please add this to your packing list.

Please note: The Laos government has banned e-cigarettes, vapes and related products. Please ensure you do not pack these in your luggage.

Practical Information

Visa

Laos

Travellers from the UK, US and EU normally need a visa to enter Laos. Please note, visa requirements often change and it is your responsibility to obtain any required visas for this trip. Therefore, we recommend that you check with the nearest embassy or consulate of your chosen destination(s), including any countries you may be transiting or transferring through.

Some local governments provide guidance on what visas their citizens need. To help, we’ve gathered a selection of useful links below.

A visa can be obtained on arrival for most nationalities, though not all and not at all entry points. The cost depends on nationality and you will require at least one passport photo. When you enter Laos, make sure you get an entry stamp in your passport. Not having a legitimate entry stamp could lead to arrest or a large fine.

Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF)

Laos has launched a new online immigration form, replacing the traditional paper arrival/departure cards. Here’s what you need to know.

Who must register:

All foreign passport holders entering or exiting Laos via:

  • Wattay International Airport (Vientiane)
  • Luang Prabang International Airport
  • Pakse International Airport
  • Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I (Vientiane–Nong Khai)

How to register:

  • Visit immigration.gov.la
  • Submit the form within the three days before your travel date for both arrival and departure
  • Upload passport details and a selfie with your passport
  • Receive a QR code to present at immigration

For more information, watch this video

Vaccinations and Health

Laos

There are no required vaccinations. However, you may want to consider vaccinations for hepatitis A, tetanus, typhoid, cholera, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, rabies and tuberculosis. There is also a slight risk of malaria. Please confirm the best course of action on all the above with your doctor or travel clinic.

Additionally, dengue fever, a tropical viral disease spread by daytime biting mosquitoes, is a known risk in places visited. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available; therefore, we recommend you take the usual precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Methanol: The FCDO warns travellers to be cautious of methanol poisoning when travelling in destinations visited on the trip.

Local Time

Laos's time zone: Asia/Vientiane (UTC +07:00)

Electricity

Laos's electricity: Plug types A (two flat pins), B (three pins: two flat, one round), C (two round pins), E (two round pins) and F (two round pins) – 230V, 50Hz

Discover Laos in Comfort

Money

Laos's currency: Lao kip (LAK) Although US dollars are accepted locally, the notes must be in pristine/new condition as most shops and restaurants will not accept any US dollars with creases (even a fold mark), tears, ink stains or other signs of use or damage. Withdrawing the local currency from the ATM or a money exchanger is recommended for ease.

ATM Availability

ATMs are widespread in the cities and are the easiest way of obtaining money. Credit cards are accepted in most restaurants and shops catering for tourists in the main towns/cities; in smaller shops, cash is preferred. If you would like to bring cash, there is ample opportunity for you to change this.

Extra Expenses & Spending Money

Allow about US$250 for meals not included, which will allow you to eat well. Apart from the food, you should allow money to cover soft drinks (more if you like a beer) and souvenirs.

Optional excursions

To make the most of your free time in Luang Prabang , you may wish to participate in one of the optional excursions below.

While it may be possible to book and join these excursions locally, this cannot be guaranteed. The activities are popular and are not always available to book locally at late notice.

To avoid disappointment, we recommend pre-booking with us at the time of booking your trip, or no later than 30 days before travel.

Your options are:

  • Day 6 or Day 8: Bamboo weaving & cooking class (4.30pm-8pm): You are picked up at your hotel and transferred to Bamboo Experience’s venue where you have an interactive cooking class and bamboo-weaving exercise. Spend an evening learning about the importance of the ubiquitous bamboo plant to Lao culture and see the process of bamboo weaving and traditional Lao cooking using bamboo shoot as the main ingredient.
  • Day 8: MandaLao, communicating with elephants afternoon tour: Begin by creating nutritious treats for the elephants. After meeting the elephants on the banks of the Nam Kahn, give them your treats and walk briefly with them before coming back to the property for local snacks. This activity includes round-trip transport from/to the hotel and a local guide from MandaLao. Pick up is at 2pm/2.30pm and you return to the hotel at 5.30pm. Please note this activity is limited to eight people daily, so advanced booking is essential.
  • Day 8: Afternoon natural tie-dying class: Enjoy a hands-on introduction to silkworms and silk types, creating natural dyes using plants from a home-grown garden (just like the Lao people have done for hundreds of years). Running from 1pm-3pm, participants are dropped at the venue on the return from Kuang Si Waterfall. Transport is not included but a tuk tuk back to the hotel costs approximately US$15.
  • Day 8: Cooking class (4.30pm-8pm): A cooking class with a difference! Join us in picturesque lakeside pavilions to cook Lao food and learn about the habits and customs at the heart of Lao cuisine. Fresh ingredients are at the heart of Lao cuisine, with some intriguing and unfamiliar tastes. This activity includes a round-trip transfer from/to the hotel and a local cooking class guide/instructor as part of the activity.

Please note, it is only possible to do one of the excursions on the afternoon of Day 8 and all optional activities may be shared with people outside of your group.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Laos and the local staff will probably expect some gratuity.

Tipping kitty: To make things easy, your tour leaders will suggest you donate US$30 per person towards a kitty. This money is then used to tip local guides, hotel porters, drivers etc. If you do not wish to contribute, you are, of course, free to do so. The ‘tipping kitty’ explained above is separate from any tips for the tour leader or assistant guide.

Tour leader and assistant guide (where applicable): If you feel your tour leader has performed well over your trip, you may want to show your appreciation of their services. The sum you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a guide for a reasonable starting point:

  • Tour leader: US$5-US$6 per person, per day
  • Local assistant guide: US$4-US$5 per person, per day
