Most Inspirational Moment
Reaching the top of all the climbs was memorable, especially the ‘mountain of joy’ on the final day, when we first saw the cathedral at Santiago.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Alfonso was the perfect Exodus leader, good humoured, relaxed, attentive and with faultless English (once we’d explained “faffing” 🤣). We were thrilled to share his birthday celebrations on our final day. Meanwhile, always “working in the shadows” was the most laid back van driver and mechanic in all of Spain, the legendary Genci. A dream team.
Advice for Potential Travellers
As other reviews have noted, the cycling is tough. Galicia doesn’t really have any flat bits, and even the easier days featured some 15%-plus pitches. Get some training in first. The MTBs are heavy but very stable and the gearing helps with the long uphill grinds. There are some sketchy off road sections and the on-Camino stretches can be very busy with walkers late in the week. The region is green because it rains a lot so pack accordingly, even in the summer. And don’t make my mistake of insufficient hydration… it can cost you a day!
