Holidays in the Himalaya, India

For many, the Himalaya are synonymous with Nepal, but vast tracts of this magnificent range form the northern borders of India. From Ladakh in the northwest through to Darjeeling and Sikkim in the east, these beautiful mountains offer a diversity of scenery and culture unmatched anywhere.

For big white peaks there is Kanchenjunga and for the peak baggers, the 6153m. Stok Kangri (see Ladakh Trekking Guide). For the more culturally minded Ladakh and Zanskar offer a glimpse of what Tibet used to be like, and, all along the chain untouched villages, remote shrines and monasteries abound.

The Himalayas stretch across six nations: Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are the source of three of the world's major river systems, the Indus basin, the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin and the Yangtze basin. Truely a multi-centred touring holiday.

The Himalaya mountain system is the planet's highest and home to the world's highest peaks: the Eight-thousanders, including Mount Everest. To comprehend the enormous scale of Himalayan peaks, consider that Aconcagua, in the Andes, at 6,962 m, is the highest peak outside the Himalaya, while the Himalayan system has over 100 separate mountains exceeding 7,200 meters. An adventure holiday to challenge the toughest climber among us.

India really does offer some great off the beaten track trekking experiences.
