This was my 10th exodus trip - my first was in 1996!! About time I did a review! The fact that I have come back time and again is testament to the enduring appeal of Exodus. Some trips have been better than others - but every single one has been memorable. Ok, so this trip did not encompass the sheer drama of Russia just after the fall of the Soviet Union (wow! what memories ...). But for one week you are in a beautiful part of France. There was excellent company, excellent scenery and excellent weather. Thoroughly recommended.
Every moment of every day! With the company, scenery and weather what more could one want? Perhaps, sitting at a desk every day has made me easy to please (ok,guilty). But I was happy tramping up the hills, running down them or having a beer (and some more...) afterwards.
Our leader - Vincent runs a number of different treks, but enjoys this Snow shoe trek so leads it personally. Vincent paced the group very well and ensured that nobody fell behind. I felt that Vincent has found his vocation. Sometimes you feel guides are perhaps jaded, but you really felt that Vincent enjoyed the trip at least as much as his clients. His rucksack did not look very big, but every time he stopped a succession of snacks appeared. If I met him on home turf I would buy him a beer!
On our trip we were blessed with the weather - blue sky and little wind. Surprisingly, I always expended more effort going down hill. We had fantastic weather but this meant that especially in the afternoon it was quite hard going because the snow had melted. I would say that you need a reasonable level of fitness to get the most out of this trip.
Exodus is quite pricey, but personally I've never felt I have been buying just a holiday. More like a life experience - and can you put a price on that? (you get out what you put in). For balance, we had five days walking split four:one, with a rest day in between. I think a better split would have been three:two - but we would not have been in St Veran on the rest day.
Throughout the week we use 3 different mountain gites. Each offer something unique, whether it is their remote location, fresh bread cooked on site or the local beer on tap! Rooms will be dormitory in style with shared facilities and all will offer hearty food and a warm welcome. They are all certified “Gites de France”, with solid reputation for cleanliness and food quality.

Even well established ski resorts have trouble guaranteeing good snow conditions throughout the season, but we have the great advantage that we can operate in a variety of snow conditions which skiers might find difficult. There is generally good snow cover throughout our snowshoeing season, but at times we may have days when we will be walking below the snowline. In light snow conditions you might expect to begin walking with your snowshoes strapped to your pack, then stop to put them on as we reach more consistent snow-cover. Usually April departures may be spring-like, with snow on the top, and wild flowers appearing at lower levels, although recent years have had late heavy snowfalls.

We have chosen to categorize this holiday as ‘Mountain snowshoeing’.
This is described as: taking place in mountainous terrain, but where we restrict travel to areas considered to have very low or non-existent avalanche risk. In certain extreme conditions avalanches may become a risk in areas generally considered to be safe, and standard walks may have to be re-routed, replaced or cancelled. There will be steep and dangerous terrain in the region, but this can be easily avoided in the choice of walks.
Each day the leader will carefully assess the situation and choose the route according to current conditions and those forecast, with the overriding priority being group safety. Our leaders are required not to proceed with any proposed route (including those mentioned in brochure or trip notes) if they believe the risk to be unacceptable.
Previous mountain walking experience and a good level of fitness are essential.
