Kenya and Tanzania Adventure

Anonymous
Wed, 11/03/2010 - 08:57

Hi travelbug1

I did the Kenya & Tanzania trip in February 2008. Because of the problems following the elections in Kenya at that time our itinerary had to be changed slightly but, for me, this only added to the excitement of the trip.
The Exodus team were fabulous & my fellow travellers were a great group. It was just the kind of holiday that I needed.

By a coincidence, I see that you have done the "Taste of Cuba" trip. I am booked to go on this in January!!! Love to hear how you found it & if you have anything to ask about the K & T trip.

Thanks for your feedback about the K & t Trip. Do you have any tips, i.e. regarding sleeping bags etc? I loved Cuba the trip was excellent and the Guide was brilliant only wished I had booked a longer trip. Plenty of variety and very full on. The Group were great and weall got on really well. Recommend the catermeran trip to the island but watch the local wild life. a couple of people in the group got bitten. Try and get lots of small change for tipping because everyone want tips from the minute you arrive and its very difficult to get change so you end up giving too much. Enjoy youself x Pat x

Hi Pat, the K & T Adventure really was aptly named.  Because of the circumstances we drove straight to Arusha from Nairobi & made our way to Lake Victoria from there . . . and then back again!  Took in different places along the way & I'm not sure (from your itinerary) if you'll get the same ones but it's bound to be great because there are so many amazing places.  I have no words to describe the "space" of the Serengeti.  I spent a lot of time gazing off into the distance and sighing!  Ngorongoro is unique and fabulous too.  (Watch out for the kites at the picnic site there & keep a tight hold on your sandwich if you value your lunch as much as I do!)  Gibbs Farm is lovely if you get chance to visit or, if not there, see if you can visit a coffee farm nearer Kilimanjaro.  Mto Wa Mbu village near Manyara is very worthwhile especially the church singers (they have their CDs for sale).  If you're visiting Tarangire don't wear blue clothing - Tsetse flies are attracted to it.  Are you doing Zanzibar?

My sleeping bag is a Karrimor Global Traveller 700 and I used a cotton liner with it.  Some others had much bulkier ones but I found mine warm enough.  A travel pillow would have been good though - I had to use my padded rucksack.  My headtorch was invaluable & it could be hung up in the tent whilst dressing when dark/dull.  I know that you're well-travelled so I'm sure you know all the usual stuff but don't know if you've camped Exodus style/safari style.  Some of the campsite showers are a bit basic - make sure you can hang your washbag up and that your trusty toilet roll can be kept dry.

On to Cuba.  Where is the best place to exchange money and get small change?  Is there opportunity to wash clothes out (I like to travel light)?  Had you got your amount of travel money (re:your departure lounge chat) about right?  Best wishes Kim x

Hi Kim ,  Thanks for your message that really useful.  Yes I am doing Zanzibar  As for Cuba,  you will have the opportunity to change money straight away at the airport and then would be an chance to ask for some small change.  Washing clothes is difficult because although you have a couple of days in Triniday and Havanna because of the humidity it takes things ages to dry unless you have that special quick drying facric.  I took £400 spending money which was sufficient as there is not much to spend money on  other than food and mojitos.     Hoping to do the Inca Trail and Amazon later next year.  Regards

Hi Pat, Many thanks for your reply and useful info.  I will alter my packing list accordingly.

The Spice Tour in Zanzibar was a great highlight with wonderfully good humoured guide.  I also visited Jozani Forest to see the Red Colobus Monkeys.

I am particularly interested in the wildlife wherever I go.  You'll find your safari guides in K & T very knowledgeable.  Ask loads of questions.  Are there any opportunities on the Cuba trip?

All the best   Kim x

Hi Kim,

This particular Cuba trip is not about wildlife really its more about the cultural and political emphasis of the courtry, a lot about che Guevara and a lot of sightseeing.  The wildlife, iguanas and tree rats are on the island you visit on the catermaran and it you go on the walk offered you will see some interesting butterflys and crabs.

Hi Pat. I see you put departure as Sun 23rd - does this mean you will already be out there? Or does it mean I have the date wrong? Whatever, I look forward to seeing you and the others. Meanwhile, I'm off to the Sahara next weekend - anything to cut down on an English winter.

Hi,  Thanks for your message.  I got the date wrong, sorry its the 22nd so we could be on the same trip.  At the moment they dont have enough people to run the tour so i'm waiting to hear tomorrow what is happening.  I am going with two girlfriends so with you and one other that would make up the five already booked.  I think they need minimum of eight.  So we'll se what happens.  Enjoy the Saraha.  I would be away too at this time but I am committed to a job until the end of March so cant take too much time off at the moment.  Planning to go to Peru and the Inca Trail next year as well.

Keep in touch

Regards

The night we camped in Serengeti, they were literally feet away from us & several campers felt something brush up against them in the tent that night!!  All part of the most amazing experience.  Wait til you get to Ngorongoro Crater!

Hello again Pat, have i missed something??   I know nothing of a lion killing under a tree?

You mustnt worry, the staff are exceptional & look after you very well. Are you on Facebook?  My pics are on there if you want to see them.  I went to India 2008 as i just adore tigers (was lucky enough to see several) & had the most amazing time ever & seeing the Taj Mahal is something i shall never ever forget (want to go back at moonlight) & thought nothing on earth could beat that trip (i made some superb friends too) UNTIL that is, i went to Africa....  WOW!   If you get the chance to do the balloon trip over the Serengeti, you MUST..... words cannot describe how i felt that day, had many tears of joy & the best cooked breakfast under the Serengeti sun with plenty of champagne in the middle of nowhere :-)    :-)   STILL being talked about!

Hello Pat and others.

I am joining this trip in January. Coffee before the flight is ideal especially if Kenya airways has good in-flight entertainment worth enjoying throughout the flight!!

Tue, 12/07/2010 - 22:27

Looks like the trip is starting to get a few more bodies in now. Reckon we'll be at a nice number come the 22nd January.

Looking forward togetting the busy period at work over with, and getting out there.

Anybody thought about what they'd like to do in Zanzibar? I've started to look at scuba companies, to see if I can find a couple that do the try dives, as I am not PADI qualified, but do enjoy a little bit of scuba.

Hi Tim,  be nice to have you with us.  Not long now till we'll be out of this cold.   We'll exchange mobile numbers nearer the time so we can contact one another at the airport to meet up.  Have a great Christmas.  Pat x

I asked to be seated in the two-seat section of the aircraft already but not sure whether it's been done.

What are your budgets? It's been a while since I last travelled with cash only and am trying to figure out how much to take. *scratches head*

Us  'girls' are takiing £700 in dollars beause we want to do the Balloon Trip and some other extra trips while we are there.  You clan always take money back if your don't spend it, but may be difficult to get to ATM machines, so though we better be on the safe side. As far as seats together go unless we all check in together I dont think that will happen.  Better look out for the Exodus labels at the check in queue.  My mobile number is 07854 634871 so ring me and we can all get in touch and have a coffee or drink together before we get on the plane.  I did that on my last trip and it  worked really well.  We felt as though we knew one another before the holiday started.  Look forward to meeting everyone.   Nice to know there are some tough blokes going who will help us put our tent up.

Tim, I'll probably take around £500 - all in small USD notes. Reckon there'll be cash machines on Zanzibar, but doubt there will be anywhere else.

I made no requests for seating on the plane. I'm unlikely to sleep much on there anyway - I rarely do.

 Mobile number's 07855 473 721. See you in 3 weeks

 Dan

PS - Don't forget your "Warms" for Ngorongoro.

Sorry I forgot to add, if anyone else is taking Malarone tablets, Superdrug appears to be the cheapest pharmacy out there. £2.10 per tablet, check their website for your nearest Superdrug Pharmacy. Tablets produced by GlaxoSmithKline which is presumably why they are so expensive. Lets hope they work!

Thanks Anthony,  That's really cheap.  Boots sell them for £3.50.  Already got mine through a friend but it can work out  quite expensive.  You can also get them online from Travelpharm but you have to send your prescription up to them.  I'm sure the Superdrug ones will be ok,  they just don't make so much profit probably.

hi gang

i'll be your tour leader for this trip (as i was for mandy)

as far as i'm aware, nobody has ever been eaten by lions while taking a shower in the serengeti.  cold showers are only possible if the elephants havent knocked over the water tank!

the balloon ride is excellent, i did it myself on xmas eve.  if you havent pre booked it, please be aware that i cannot guarantee to get you a space, it is always very busy.

you will get a better rate of exchange for large USD bills, but it's a good idea to bring a few hundred in smaller notes.  DO NOT rely on an ATM card to obtain money.  there is a cash point on zanzibar now, but it is dependant on power, so half the time doesnt work.

food prices have increased a lot on znz over the last year, i reckon to budget around $30 a day for food alone, more if you drink a lot of beer.

there have been a lot of sea urchins at the beach recently, so some kind of footwear protection would be wise.  then the locals wont have to pee on you to pull the spines out!

looking forward to meeting you all...  please bring wine gums!

Hi Linda, you have such a great job!  Am very envious of you & so glad you did the balloon trip.  Can honestly say it was one of the best experiences of my life - not to mention the breakfast!

Everyone on the trip have fun!  I did!!

Fri, 01/07/2011 - 11:40

Bearing in mind we don't want to take too much stuff, I checked on the provision of sleeping mats as the Trip Notes say they are not provided on participatory trips (which is what we're on). Sleeping mats WILL be provided and the Trip Notes will be amended. Jeff

Nice to hear from you and look forward to meeting you.  I am a little worried as when I mentioned to the Exodus Office we wanted to do the Balloon Trip they said it had to be booked locally and you mention that it needs to be booked in advance. We dont want to miss out on this so what do we need to do?

hi girls

as far as i'm aware the exodus office in london were always the ones to book the balloon flight, but i can make a phone call this side no problem, they normally want payment up front, but i can explain the situations and see what they say. i cannot promise anything though.   the price is $499.
