This was an exciting trip to the South Atlantic on board the Akademic Sergey Vavilov. We travelled by air to Mount Pleasant airport in the Falklands and then 850 miles by sea to one of the remotest locations on the Earth. Landings at Salisbury Plain, Fortuna Bay, Gold Harbour and Royal Bay offered amazing scenes of close up wildlife. At Grytviken, Stromness and Leith we were able to observe the historical buildings of the whaling industry and some of the sites associated with Ernest Shackletons epic escape from Antarctica. Paul Goldstein, with his usual energy and well intentioned banter, ensured a high tempo was maintained throughout the trip, and having Mark Cawardine on board with his anecdotes from a lifetime of presenting natural history on national media was a particular highlight for me. Another bucket list item completed. Bring on the next.
