AYX - Photographic Safari 20th August

Fri, 04/13/2012 - 19:43

Hi,

I have booked on my second Photographic Safari and third trip with Paul. I am very excited already and hope to learn from my mistakes last time.

Who else is going?

IJG

I've done a couple of safaris and a couple of photographic trips before (not with Exodus), but this is the first one to combine the two - really looking forward to it.

Hello,

The trip to Kenya will be my first with Exodus. I went to Kicheche Mara Camp last Feb at the end of a work trip and adored it so have been desperate to go back ever since!  Currently trying to claim a new camera on my insurance before we go though as I  drowned my favourite body and lens in a Japanese onsen bath last month, not good!

Ever since I went to an evening presentation given by Paul last Easter, I decided that I would love to have an opportunity to take one wildlife photograph which was even half as good as one of his. Hopefully I will be able to take more than one though, so I'm coming too. I cannot claim to be the world's best photographer though, so I am swotting up. What level of camera/lens etc  are you intending to take? Sue  (S Bayley)

Just a few weeks to go now, time to start planning my shot list. I find this helps me focus on the pictures I want, as it is all too easy to snap everything and not take the time to compose a good shot. Also the trip will be over before you know it!

I will be taking two SLR's this time, as the sensor can get very dirty if you are changing lenses too often. One camera will have my big zoom (200-400), and the other will have a wide angle (16-35), with the option of a medium zoom (70-200). A teleconverter is also useful as lenses can never be long enough. Take plenty of memory cards and if possible, something to back up the pictures. A laptop is useful to view your pictures on a larger screen.

This all sounds a bit extreme, but it is only 1 week every couple of years that an opportunity like this happens.

Hello again! Re kit I will be taking the following:

2 x camera bodies (Canon 5DmkII and 7D), 400mm prime, 70-300mm zoom, 17-40mm wide angle plus a laptop and external hard drive.

On a separate note, the trip notes mention obtaining a visa on arrival. Is everyone going down that road or are you going to get one in advance?

The last time I went to Kenya, I got my Visa on arrival. I got in the wrong queue at immigration and it took me 45mins+ and the officer had a distinct lack of humility. However, weigh this up against going to the Kenyan embassy in London during the Olympics, or posting your passport away this close to departure and possibly the pain of border control just wins :)
