A tour of some of the most beautiful and fascinating parts of Albania. A country which is a melting pot of different influences while remaining distinctly Albanian. A mixture of fascinating archaeology, stunning scenery, meeting the local people and learning about their culture and customs. We left wanting to return to see more.
The part of the trip I was most looking forward to was visiting Butrint and it didn't disappoint. We also loved swimming in the hot spring at Benje, an evening promenade along the lake shore at Pogradec, swimming in the Ionian Sea, some wonderful meals and the overwhelming friendliness and hospitality of the people.
Ed has tremendous energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. He is an excellent communicator and provided a great introduction to his home country. He was indefatigable in his attempts to make the best of every opportunity for us to soak up the atmosphere and really get to know the country. We soon learned to trust Ed and we would see all we wanted to see and more, while still having time to relax and enjoy the experience. Our driver Rashat was also excellent and made some wonderful suggestions for stopping off points on the road.
Travel with an open mind and a ready smile. Take advice on the best places to change money. Be aware not everyone outside the tourist areas will speak English but everyone will want to be helpful and hospitable. The food for vegetarians is better than we expected. We didn't need the walking boots we took but we did have very good weather. There is some begging by Roma in the big towns.
A couple of changes could be made to the tour. A night in the village of Voskopoje would have been lovely, rather than Korca. Durres was rather too brash and metropolitan for us so possibly Kruje for the last night.. It would also be nice to stay at a smaller resort on the coast such as Himare rather than the high rise resort of Sarande. We would sacrifice some hotel facilities, e.g. wifi, for the chance to stay somewhere quieter or more authentic. Hotel Permeti rooms were rather cramped but those at Hotel Perla, Pogradec were palatial.
We loved all of this trip. The scenery, the people and the food, as well as the historical parts. It was a country I knew so little about and was a little apprehensive about do to its reputation of being a 'bad land' In fact it was amazing .We felt very safe and found the people most hospitable and the roads although very windy had as a whole very good surfaces

Our group leader Ed probably made the trip. His enthusiasm for his country was infectious and his knowledge about everything amazing and like most Albanians talked incessantly. He constantly included 'extras' where possible to make it a fuller experience and always found us excellent eating opportunities at good value in the local cuisine

Most nationalities, including British, require a full passport that must be valid for 6 months beyond the intended length of stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct personal documents and to obtain your own visa, if one is necessary, in accordance with the regulations of the country you are to visit.

Food in Albania is quite varied thanks to the many influences on the country and particularly Mediterranean combining both Turkish and European tastes. Dairy products, especially milk and yoghurt are present in almost every meal, usually locally sourced. Meals are reasonably priced at 10-15 euros per person for traditional dishes including baked rice, casseroles, stuffed aubergine and Jani Meat (beef or lamb sautéed with onions, garlic and spices).
Fresh fish is also plentiful from the sea or lakes and is an important ingredient in many dishes. Dishes that must be sampled are Tirana stew, Elbasani yoghurt and baked phyllo pie. For dessert, there are the classic cookies and puddings but most importantly the Baklava is very popular. Drinks are reasonably priced with a bottle of beer costing around £2.20 yet traditional drinks need to be tried as well, Raki and "Scanderbeg" Cognac, (noted for its unique flavour and aroma). Your leader will recommend restaurants for each evening.

There will be some long drives (maximum 5 hours on day 4) and windy roads in some areas but this is more than made up for by the spectacular, wild scenery. Some of the drives, especially between Korca and Gjirokastra, or Sarande to Dhermi, are particularly special.
