The Kingdom of Jordan is the perfect place to combine a cycling tour with some of the best sites in the Middle East. This bicycle tour takes us through olive groves and hill top villages in the north, while further south we will head along desert roads where the communities are sparse and nomadic and the landscape vast and spectacular. If the cycling alone isn't enough to entice you, perhaps the UNESCO site of Petra; a night under the stars in the Wadi Rum desert; or, a float in the Dead Sea will tempt you to visit this fascinating country.

    • Spring and autumn are very popular as it is cooler, at around 24degC in the day and down to 8degC at night. Rain is more likely, but protracted bad weather is unlikely.
    • In the summer Jordan is hot and dry but not unpleasant. Daytime maximum temperatures are around 32degC in Amman. Rain is unusual but possible.
    • In winter it is generally crisp and sunny in the day but be prepared for cooler temperatures than you might think, approx. 7-10degC. At night it can get particularly cold, approaching freezing. Please be prepared for this, especially for the night spent in the Wadi Rum. There are even occasions when it snows in the winter months.

    Weather & seasonality

Cycle through the spectacular desert scenery of Jordan and visit the most impressive historical can UNESCO sites.

All breakfast, 2 lunches and 1 dinner in Wadi Rum are included. Whilst staying in hotels we usually eat in local restaurants and on some occasions the leader will take those who wish, to a restaurant for a 'mezze' style meal. A mezze meal is made up of lots of small dishes which are eaten as a starter before a larger main course. A mezze meal is a great way to taste lots of different foods from the area in one sitting. These allow fast service and a good quality of food for the group and usually cost 10-15 JOD pp. Allow about £190-230 (approx. US$300-370) to cover these meals. If you are vegetarian, please note that main meals are limited in choice; however mezze is almost always available in restaurants and is a good, filling options. There is also a good choice of seafood available when at the Red Sea. Meals are nearly always served with bread or in wraps so we recommend bringing some of your own snacks if your diet is more limited.
This trip is classified road and Activity Level 3 (Moderate). 5 days cycling, average 45km/day (28 miles), 100% vehicle support. Terrain: 100% tarmac but there are sections where loose sand and gravel cover the roads. Please see the introductory pages of the cycling holidays brochure or our website for more information on classification and grading This tour centres on the Jordan Valley using mostly tarmac roads which are generally in a good state of repair, with some pot-holed sections. The first two riding days involve several descents on tarmac roads. In places there may be some loose stones so care needs to be taken. Some of the descents are quite steep but the leader will be able to assist you if you are not confident and the trip is fully vehicle supported should you decide you want a day off riding. The fourth day of cycling is the longest and most challenging in terms of terrain, but it is also the most spectacular. There are several ascents and one reasonably long and quite steep descent. This day is a fantastic day of riding but it is important you have a reasonable level of fitness and keep well hydrated in the warmer months. On the whole the cycling days are quite short and, other than day 6, you will not be cycling all day. The trip is well balanced with the cultural sites and these are as much the focus as the cycling. On the two days spent in Petra there is a fair amount of walking involved, the site is big and there are opportunities to walk into the sandstone mountains to get a different and rewarding perspective of the site. Again, it is important that you have a reasonable level of fitness and that you keep well hydrated. Whilst camping in Wadi Rum please be aware that although the campsite does have a plumbed toilet and a shower the facilities are basic and running water can be limited. During the winter months Jordan can experience some low temperatures so it is really important that you are adequately equipped for the cycling and the night in the desert during this time. Conversely, during the summer months it can get very hot and you will need to ensure that you are hydrated and have appropriate sun protection. If you have any queries about the difficulty of the trip please do not hesitate to contact us.

The dramatic skyline of peaks and jagged volcanic plugs which tower over the highland plateaux of the Simien Mountains compete with rugged gorges and deep gullies to form what is, arguably, the most awe-inspiring landscape in Africa. As we trek through this distant mountain range we pass small hamlets where villagers eke out an existence from the limited arable land. We may come across large troops of Gelada baboons foraging on the escarpment; and, with luck, spot Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolves.
In January we have a special Timkat Festival departure which is one day longer, please see the trip notes for more details.

    • It is likely to be sunny most of the time on all departures. Most of Ethiopia is high, so although the sun is powerful, the temperature is usually very pleasant. There is, however, the risk of sunburn at high altitude, so it is essential you ensure you are adequately protected. Nights are generally cool to cold, depending on altitude and frosts are possible overnight in the mountains, when the night temperature could drop to 0degC and exceptionally to -5degC. Daytime temperatures seldom rise above 25degC except at lower altitudes. It can be very hot in the lowlands in December, January and February. The main rains come between June and late September, and while November is one of the coolest months of the year it is also generally one of the clearest. January and February will be hotter and much drier. The landscape is likely to be more arid than in October and November, which can still be quite lush after the rains. Please note that there is a possibility of rain on all departures (especially October).

    Weather & seasonality

Trek through Ethiopia's dramatic Simien Mountains.

All breakfasts, 9 lunches, 9 dinners Hotel meals are generally good although they can lack variety. Local dishes tend to be very good if you like hot, spicy food although milder versions can be requested. Local food is traditionally eaten with the hands. The sour bread known as injera is used as a scoop for the casserole dishes known as wat. All food on trek is cooked for you and, although local produce can be a bit limited in the mountains, it is usually of a high standard. Vegetarians can be catered for, though you may find the diet somewhat limited. Clients who have specialist dietary requirements must contact us to discuss if they can be accommodated. Ethiopia is a poor country and they are not familiar with gluten or lactose free diets. Please note that you should not drink the tap water in Ethiopia. We also suggest that clients bring snack food as this can be difficult to obtain outside of Addis Ababa.
This is a strenuous trek with several days spent close to or above 4,000 metres. There are a number of long days including the optional ascent of Ras Dashen, at 4,543m the highest mountain in Ethiopia; this involves 1,300m of ascent and descent in one day. There is also a lot of ascent and descent on many of the other days, and some fairly exposed rough trails. We do not suggest that you attempt this trek unless you are confident of your ability. The total cumulative amount of ascent is 6,500m, and the descent is 7,650m. There are 10 days walking with full porterage, and the trip is graded C (this is at the tougher end of the grade C scale though). On the October departures there is the possibility of some river crossings. The trails in the Simien Mountains are generally well marked and the landmarks are distinctive. We will be walking for about 6-7 hours a day (although on 4 days as much as 10-12 hours) and the terrain can be quite tough in places. Much of the trek is in remote areas. If you suffer from vertigo, you may want to carefully consider this trip before booking. There are steep drops in the Simien Mountains, which is what makes the scenery so spectacular. There is never an occasion when you need walk close to the edge of the cliffs so if you are happy to stand back you should not be discomforted in any way.
