The Amalfi Coast is one of the most dramatic and beautiful coastlines in Europe. Mountains rise steeply out of the Mediterranean far below and picturesque towns nestle neatly in isolated coves. This self-guided walking holiday sees you descend from your quiet base on the Agerola Plain, following mule tracks and old paths through hillside villages, lemon groves and beautiful deep gorges to towns with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings and fascinating churches, monasteries and cathedrals. Away from the trails there is plenty of time to partake in the traditional Amalfi pastimes of sampling incredible food and wine, as well as enjoying the Mediterranean climate. A highlight of the tour is one of the world's greatest walks, trekking on the 'Path of the Gods'. A visit to the Bay of Naples would not be complete without seeing the incredible Roman remains of Pompeii beneath the volcanic cone of Vesuvius.

  • Southern Italy, in common with a lot of the Mediterranean, possesses a hot, dry climate in summer and cooler but slightly damper spring and autumn periods. At coastal levels winters are mild and damp. Rainfall is most expected in winter months with an average of one day in three affected. Unseasonable cold spells are possible at any time of year, during which time you will need warm clothes, especially in Bomerano where evening temperatures can be lower than expected. It is very important to be equipped for cooler weather in early spring, late autumn and winter.

Independent walks on Italy's magnificent Amalfi Coast

All breakfasts, 4 packed lunches and all dinners are included. Breakfast: continental-style with a choice of cereal, bread, pastries, yoghurt, orange juice and milk with an array of teas/coffee. Lunch: usually a sandwich filled with a choice of cold meats, tuna or locally made cheeses. Dinner: all evening meals are taken in the hotel, where the standard is excellent, and are typically Italian. Meals usually consist of four courses, commencing with antipasti, followed by soup and/or pasta, a main meat dish with salad or vegetables and dessert. Vegetarian choices are always available. You may even be given the opportunity to learn how to make the famous Neapolitan pizza. (Drinks not included).
5 days optional centre-based walking with low altitude throughout. All walks take between 4 and 6 hours including lunch stops and require a moderate level of fitness. This is a self-guided tour, so you can walk at your own pace (we recommend taking plenty of time to rest and enjoy the views!). On some of the walks the terrain encountered is similar to the one you would find on a moderate walking trip, hence the Leisurely/Moderate grade. The terrain and type of path will vary from man made paved tracks, tarmac to forest trails. On a couple of days, there are considerable sections of steps (some of which can be avoided by taking the bus).

The Greek islands have much more to offer than most would think: archaeological treasures, history, culture, dramatic landscapes over an azure coloured sea and of course delicious food. Our week starts in the ancient city of Athens, before heading towards three beautiful islands, Paros, Santorini and Naxos. Exploring the irresistible island of Santorini on foot will certainly be the highlight of our week. Hopping from one wonderful island to the other, we enjoy a relaxed week of gentle walks through picturesque villages, lush valleys and sandy beaches.

Discover three idyllic Greek islands

All breakfasts included. For lunch and dinner we will go to different local tavernas and restaurants, where we can sample some typical Greek meze dishes, olives, fresh fish, vegetables. Typical buffet style Greek breakfast consists of bread/toast, butter, jam, fresh juice, milk, local yoghurt, eggs and honey, and coffee/tea.
This trip offers the chance to discover three wonderful islands and enjoy some gentle walks. Routes have been chosen to showcase the best of the natural and historical sites on each island. Terrain will include footpaths and mountain terrain, which can be rocky and loose in places, and sloped ascents and descents, so walking poles can be useful. There are 3 day walks in our itinerary and 2 half days exploring on foot; the walks are leisurely in grade, between 2 and 5 hours including lunch breaks, and require an average level of fitness. All walks are optional. Low altitude throughout. NB: Exodus also offers a moderate 8-day walking holiday on the island of Evia (Trip Code: TVE). On some dates it is possible to combine the two trips to make a fantastic 15-day itinerary. Ask a member of our sales team for details.

Hotels
7 nights in 2- and 3-star hotels with en suite rooms. One night in a central hotel in Athens and six nights in family run hotels on the islands. All hotels have private facilities and some have a swimming pool (open June to September). Our hotel in Athens is a 3*, ideally located near the Plaka, just 10 minutes walk away from the Acropolis. On the islands, we use small family-run hotels, thus ensuring that our visit benefits the local communities. The rooms, up to 3* standard, are comfortable, clean and tidy, however the bathrooms can sometimes be a little small and old fashioned. Single Accommodation is available for a supplement from GBP130.

  • Summer weather patterns in the Rockies are typically very sunny and dry. Daytime temperatures in the mountains range from 15-30degC depending on elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and don't usually last long, although can be severe at altitude. Nights can be cool, depending on elevation. However, a storm system might bring cold and rain (even snow at altitude) at any time. Be prepared to adapt to a wide range of temperatures through layered clothing. July and August are the height of the wildflower bloom. Tours scheduled for June and early July might encounter some snow on the higher trails in all three of the national parks that we visit.

Hiking exploration in a land of glaciers, geysers, wolves and bears.

All of the meals are included whilst camping. Your Tour Leader will coordinate local shopping and assist the group in preparing healthy, hearty breakfasts, picnic lunches and delicious dinners. The food whilst camping is wholesome and North American style: breakfast usually consists of continental style fruits, breads, cereal, coffee and juice. Lunch is picnic or buffet style, with sandwiches, pita bread, sliced meat, cheeses and fruit. For snacks there are cookies, health bars and other nibbles, and dinners are soup, salad, barbecued meat, rice and pasta dishes, vegetables and dessert. Occasionally, you will eat out in local restaurants. To help you budget for these meals on average hotel breakfasts cost from US$6-12, lunches from US$8-15 and dinners from US$13-30; this does not include alcoholic beverages. Wine costs approximately US$5 per glass and beer US$4 per bottle. Please be aware that a tip of approximately 15%-20% is added to group meals in North American restaurants. Applicable taxes will also be added to all listed menu prices. Please make sure we are aware of any special meal requirements before travelling.
This tour is operated in partnership with our sister company Grand American Adventures (GAA).. As such the departures are not exclusive to Exodus and groups may be a mixture of Exodus, Grand American Adventures, and other clients. This trip is booked through Exodus and you will receive the same award winning customer service that you are used to. GAA operate with the same core principles used by Exodus and champion the benefits of small group travel. This trip is for those wanting to explore the beautiful central mountains and wilderness areas of the USA, whilst learning about the region's remarkable wildlife and geology. It is suitable for both walkers and wildlife lovers due to the varied itinerary. Whilst most of the trip will be high, it's very unlikely that we'll go above an altitude of 3000m (usually 1800-2500m). You should be reasonably active to get the most out of this trip, however, most walks are optional so you may choose to participate in only some of them if you wish. Please note that particularly for early season departures, walks may need to be shortened due to avalanche risk or snow on the trails. Walks are mostly done on well maintained trails, although some sections might be affected by water damage or be a little exposed. Expect trails to be quite rocky - a walking pole for stability is recommended. The roads are mostly paved and in very good condition, but there are some long travelling days due to the huge distances covered. All journeys have regular stops built in to break up the distances and for any wildlife that we may spot from our vehicle, since most of the routes pass through fascinating scenery. We generally use campgrounds for more than one night at a time, allowing us a base from which to explore each area. Inevitably this means that in the morning we'll need to take a short drive to the start of our walking trail or to view wildlife or scenery. In Yellowstone, traffic is often held up by 'wildlife road jams' so you should be prepared for additional time in the minibus.

Hotels & Camping
11 nights participatory camping in two-person tents, plus 1 night hotel in en suite rooms (Flight Inclusive bookings only). We use 4-man tents for every two clients. The majority of camp grounds that we use are spacious, with good facilities including flush toilets and hot showers. Self-inflating sleeping mats and other communal camping equipment is provided but you'll need to bring your own sleeping bag (2/3 season) and be prepared to get involved with participatory camping! Participatory camping involves all group members taking responsibility for several campsite duties in order to ensure a smooth-running, quick and easy camp set up. You’ll be expected to erect and dismantle your own tent and help out with taking down/setting up the camp kitchen. Additionally there is shared responsibillity for helping to prepare meals and washing up afterwards. You’ll find that these activities are fun and involving, and create a good opportunity for group bonding. Setting up camp typically takes between 15-30 minutes. Campsites differ in terms of the facilities offered, with fixed campsites generally having flush toilets, tap water, and hot showers (often for a small fee of a few dollars - this is common in North America). If staying on wild campsites then we will be more reliant upon nature! Please note that not many campsites in North America allow advance reservations for groups, although this is normally not a problem, there is no guarantee that the group will stay at all of the planned campsites. Most campsites have a quiet time from 10pm to 7am. Please respect your fellow campers who are there to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of camping.

Conan Doyle’s classic adventure novel was inspired by Venezuela’s ‘Lost World’, a region of dense jungle and rolling grassland dominated by immense sandstone table mountains known as tepuys. On a classic six-day trek we reach the summit of Mount Roraima, a maze of blackened rock and babbling streams harbouring unique plants including rare carnivorous species. We also visit Auyan Tepuy from which the highest waterfall in the world plunges almost 1000m - the spectacular Angel Falls.

  • Venezuela is a tropical country and you should be prepared mainly for very hot weather and some tropical downpours. For the majority of the trip it will generally be very humid, with a likelihood of rain at any time of the year. As we ascend Roraima, it will get steadily cooler, with an average night time temperature of around 15degC at the base camp and around 5degC at the summit, although during the day it is still hot and humid. Conditions remain constant during the June to December wet season, and although temperatures do not change dramatically year round there is less rain between January and May. Water levels in the Angel Falls and the surrounding rivers can be low in the dry season, and it is therefore not always possible to reach the falls by boat at this time of year.

Trek and camp at the top of Venezuela's Mount Roraima

As we will be camping and staying in simple accommodation for much of the trip, the choice of food is quite limited. Many meals served in the posadas will be from set menus rather than a la carte. Vegetarians can be catered for on the trip, but you should note that in much of Latin America meat is simply replaced with additional vegetables rather than with a specially prepared vegetarian dish. Please advise us at the time of booking if you have any special dietary requirements.
There are parts of the ascent and descent of Roraima where there are exposed sections in which your hands are needed to help you up: confident footwork is essential. It can be hot, humid and wet in this area of Venezuela and although the climb is not technically difficult, these conditions can make the going quite challenging in places. We travel to a remote part of Venezuela on this trip, and most of the towns that we pass through have limited facilities (except for Ciudad Bolivar). You should be prepared to stay in reasonably basic accommodation and also to spend one night in hammocks (in order to get close to Angel Falls). We reduce the driving distance covered on this trip by using internal flights chartered especially for the group - these are a highlight in themselves as they enable us to experience the savannah from the air!

Web Marketing Overview Meta
Walk in the footsteps of history, exploring the forests and peaks of America's oldest and most popular footpath, the Appalachian Trail, ideal for nature lovers and photographers alike. Our daywalks will reveal the best highlights of the region as we delve into the mountain ranges of New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Massachusetts. In Autumn, the pristine forests of New England transform into vivid hues of crimson and orange, whilst in contrast, the shores of Mount Desert Island remain rugged and wild. Acadia National Park is a real highlight, offering unsurpassable mountain, island and ocean vistas.

  • All departures fall over the summer months, from May to October when we can expect the climate to be relatively mild by North American terms. In Boston and other lowland areas we should typically see highs ranging from 22 to 27degC, with lows of 14 to 19degC from June to September. At the beginning and end of the season, in May and October, temperatures tend to be slightly lower but still comfortable, with respective highs of 19 and 16degC, and lows of 10 and 8degC.
  • The weather in the mountains is renowned for its unpredictability, and in areas of a higher elevation including the White Mountains it will feel considerably cooler, and even in summer rain and strong wind is a possibility. From June to September we should expect highs of 8 to 12 and lows of 2 to 6degC are not uncommon. Again at the start and end of the season (May and October) it can get quite chilly, with temperatures little above freezing point (often not exceeding 3 to 5degC), and possibly reaching as low as -2 to 4degC so you should be prepared for this.

Walk America's oldest and most popular trail

All of the meals are included whilst camping. Your Tour Leader will coordinate local shopping and assist the group in preparing healthy, hearty breakfasts, picnic lunches and delicious dinners.
This tour is operated in partnership with our sister company Grand American Adventures (GAA), as such the group may be a mixture of Exodus and Grand American Adventure clients. This trip is booked through Exodus and you will receive the same award winning customer service that you are used to. GAA operate with the same core principles used by Exodus and champion the benefits of small group travel. This walking tour is designed for active adults and offers a well-paced mix of walks, all of which are day walks and are therefore optional. Whilst a number of the walks, such as the Hopper Trail, Lonesome Lake and Ocean Path hikes are suitable for all fitness levels, others require a good level of fitness suitable for those who are used to regular exercise. All walks are at low altitude. In order to get the most out of the holiday and have the best experience, those on participatory camping departures will be expected to get involved with camp chores including cooking, cleaning, pitching tents and tidying up.

Participatory Camping
9 nights participatory camping (plus 1 hotel night in Boston for Flight Inclusive bookings only).

Weather & seasonality

On hotel based tours, meals are not included and you will usually eat out in local restaurants. To help you budget for your meals on average hotel breakfasts cost from US$6-12, lunches from US$8-15 and dinners from US$13-30; this does not include alcoholic beverages. Wine costs approximately US$5 per glass and beer US$4 per bottle. Please also be aware that a tip of approximately 15%-20% is added to group meals in North American restaurants. Applicable taxes will also be added to all listed menu prices. Your Tour Leader may offer your group the option to operate a ‘lunch only’ food kitty, this has proven to be a popular alternative to three daily restaurant meals. Leaders will fully explain this option while on your tour, and the whole group will have to agree for this system to run. Please make sure we are aware of any special meal requirements before travelling.

Peru has been home to many civilisations, most notably the Incas, whose ancient cities and fortresses are still being discovered across this fascinating region. Our three-part itinerary includes the Inca Trail (or alternative Moonstone trek), which takes in beautiful mountains and cloud forest as we follow a historic route to Machu Picchu, the best-preserved and most dramatic Inca ruin. We also explore the harsh landscapes of the high altiplano and the islands of Lake Titicaca and, in complete contrast, the dense jungles of the Amazon Rainforest.

  • Peru's diverse geography results in a very varied climate. The coastal desert, including Lima, is generally dry but cloudy through most of the year. The exception is January to March when the skies are clear and the temperatures rise.
  • In Cuzco and the Andes, April to November is the dry season; during these months the sky is generally bright and clear with strong sunshine in the mornings, sometimes clouding over as the day progresses. In the Andes, however, anything is possible at any time of year, including cloud rolling up from the Amazon basin, rain or even snow, and rapid and unexpected changes! During the dry season temperatures at night can dip to around the freezing mark (and sometimes below!), particularly around Lake Titicaca. The chart above only shows average temperatures; daytime and night time extremes in the Andes, particularly in the dry season can be very different to these.
  • Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu are in the Cloud Forest and as such attract large amounts of precipitation all year as clouds move up from the Amazon basin. Rain here can be heavy, but is seldom prolonged.
  • Whilst the Amazon Rainforest is generally warm and humid, it can be subject to drops in temperature caused by cold fronts pushing in from the south, especially in June and July. This can send temperatures dropping into single figures, and we recommend that you take some warm clothing with you to the lodge in case of sudden changes in the weather.

Weather & seasonality

Trekking, jungle and indigenous culture - the best of Peru

Breakfast: hotel breakfasts are normally buffet-style; on trek they are more substantial and include a cooked dish. Lunch: while trekking, lunches generally include a hot main course. Lunches in the rainforest are either buffet lunches or picnics depending on the day's activities. Dinner: evening meals on trek are always cooked, and usually consist of soup or starter, a main course and dessert. Buffet dinners are provided in the rainforest. Water: while on the trek, you will be given drinking water (boiled and filtered) in the morning and at lunch to refill your water bottles.
There are 4 days walking with full porterage, at a maximum altitude of 4150m, average 3050m. Though not without its difficulties (in particular the ascent and descent of the first pass, known as the Dead Woman's Pass) this trek is certainly possible for anyone in a good state of health and fitness, but we would not recommend it as a beginner's trek to anyone who is totally unused to walking. You should be aware that the size of Peru means that this trip involves some long drives, particularly the one from Cuzco to Puno, and you should be prepared for this. The buses used are comfortable and the scenery is outstanding. There will be several stops along the way to help break up the journey. This trip spends considerable time at altitude - please see the warning in the Trip Notes for more information.

LIMITED INCA TRAIL PERMITS

There is a daily cap on the number of trekking permits available for the Inca Trail, and they sell out very quickly, especially for peak season treks. For this reason, we recommend booking your trek at least 4 months in advance, or 6 months for the peak trekking months of July, August and September.

ALTERNATIVE MOONSTONE TREK
When Inca Trail permits run out, we offer an alternative trek (not requiring a permit) in its place. Please click here for details about the alternative remote Moonstone Trek.

  • Madagascar has a tropical climate with two seasons - rainy and dry. The driest season extends from April to October. It can be cold on the central plateau (including Antananarivo) in the evenings, and in the rainforest areas, so you should bring warm clothes (fleece and waterproof). There is considerable regional variation but coastal areas will normally be very hot and dry. Expect daytime in the shade temperatures up to 38degC from October-December and up to 30degC during April and September.

Weather & seasonality

Explore Madagascar's National Parks, mountains and incredible wildlife.

All breakfasts, 5 lunches and 5 dinners included. The food in Madagascar is generally of a good quality, particularly so at the coast where the seafood is excellent. The cuisine has been strongly influenced by the French and a three-course meal should cost GBP9-13 (approx. USD16-23). A one-course lunch should cost GBP4-6 (approx. USD7-11). Please allow approx. GBP150 (approx. USD 260) for the meals not included, plus a little more if you enjoy a drink with dinner! Malagasy lager is reasonably priced and easily available. Malagasy wine is also reasonably priced but is not to everyone's taste. It is sometimes possible to get hold of French or South African wine. A delicacy in Madagascar is the various flavoured Rums which are widely sold and very reasonably priced. Please note that if you eat neither fish nor meat, your food options will be rather limited (i.e. omelette, cheese, pasta, vegetables and rice) on this trip. Breakfasts are usually simple, offering a baguette, jam and coffee or tea. You may wish to bring something to supplement your morning meal (e.g spread, peanut butter etc).
Madagascar is a rewarding destination with its wealth of flora and fauna, but, before you decide to travel, we would highlight the following issues for you to consider: Travelling by vehicle in Madagascar can be uncomfortable as some of the road quality varies. Please read our travelling conditions for more information. We do have some longer drives but the diverse scenery more than makes up for time spent on the bus. We break up our road journeys with stops to visit villages, to take photos and to stretch our legs. Madagascar is one of the world's poorest countries and a degree of flexibility and improvisation is required at times. The tourist infrastructure in Madagascar is still new and some services are limited. It is not unusual for there to be changes to accommodation or internal flights and for this reason, the order of the itinerary (but not the content) may sometimes have to be changed. However, what tourism does exist is of a pleasantly good standard and you may be impressed by the level of services in some of the places we stay. Moderate/Challenging graded trips are suitable for clients with a good level of fitness. Previous trekking experience is desirable but not vital as long as you are confident of your physical condition. Some of the areas we visit are quite remote and will have basic facilities. Some of the walks in the national parks are uneven and may be slippery underfoot so you need to be comfortable with this. In addition, some of the trekking days are quite long, and at certain times of the year, the heat can make these walks more strenuous.

Hotels & Camping
You will spend 8 nights in simple hotels with en suite facilities and 5 nights full service camping in very basic sites. We use tourist class hotels throughout the trip except during the treks where we camp in the national parks. The hotels are simple but comfortable. Please note that although all the hotels are said to have reliable electricity and water, there may be instances in which you experience some gaps in supply; this is more a reflection of life in Madagascar than the standard of the hotel. During the camping portions, we will be camping in small mobile two-person tents. The camping is full service so the tents will be erected for you. Campsites in the parks in Madagascar usually offer only very basic facilities. You should not expect hot showers, flushing toilets and western standards of cleanliness at some of the places we stay. Some toilets may be long drops. Please come prepared. All camping equipment is provided except sleeping bags. Single Supplement is available on request and the price is from GBP290.

Offering an unrivalled combination of history and dramatic scenery, the ancient Inca Trail winds its way from the powerful Urubamba River, across mountain passes and through cloud forests, passing several crumbling fortresses before reaching the lost city of Machu Picchu. Our trip is designed to maximise the time spent at Machu Picchu, and a dawn tour of the ruins allows us to appreciate the site before the crowds of day trippers and other trekkers arrive. (Alternative remote Moonstone trek available when Inca Trail permits have sold out).

  • Peru's diverse geography results in a very varied climate. The coastal desert including Lima, is generally dry but cloudy through most of the year.
The chart below only shows average temperatures, daytime and night time extremes in the Andes, particularly in the dry season can be very different from these.
This can send temperatures dropping into single figures, and if taking the rainforest extension we recommend that you take some warm clothing with you to the lodge in case of sudden changes in the weather.

Weather & seasonality

Follow in the footsteps of the Peruvian Incas

Breakfast: hotel breakfasts are normally buffet-style; on trek they are more substantial and include a cooked dish. Lunch: while trekking, lunches consist of a picnic, with hot drinks where possible. Dinner or Evening meal: dinners on trek are always cooked, and usually consist of soup or starter, a main course and dessert. Water: drinking water (boiled and filtered) is provided in the mornings and at lunch during the trek so that you can refill your bottles.
There are 4 days walking with full porterage, at a maximum altitude of 4150m, average 3050m. Though not without its difficulties (in particular the ascent and descent of the first pass, known as Dead Woman's Pass!) this trek is certainly possible for anyone in a good state of health and fitness, but we would not recommend it as a beginner's trek to anyone who is totally unused to walking. It is also not particularly suitable for those with bad knees due to the number of steep and uneven steps, particularly on the third and fourth days of the trek, although the use of trekking poles will help to reduce strain on the knees. This trip spends considerable time at altitude - please see the Trip Notes for more information.

INCA TRAIL PERMITS ARE LIMITED
There is a daily cap on the number of trekking permits available for the Inca Trail, and they sell out very quickly, especially for peak season treks. For this reason, we recommend booking your trek at least 4 months in advance, or 6 months for the peak trekking months of July, August and September.

ALTERNATIVE MOONSTONE TREK
When Inca Trail permits run out, we offer an alternative trek (not requiring a permit) in its place. Please click here for details about the alternative remote Moonstone Trek.

Trip Extensions: If you would like to visit the Amazon Rainforest or beautiful Lake Titicaca it is possible to extend your trip. For more details please refer to the Trip Notes or call our Sales team, who will be happy to assist you.
