Cuba: La Isla Grande

Cuba - La Isla Grande

5
"IMAGINE" shouts the heading on a poster of Che Guevara alongside John Lennon, perhaps summing up Cuba as an island of contrasts. Just a few short streets away from the vibrant centre of Havana and you're in a different world of faded colonial glory, crumbling buildings and ruins, but the friendliness and hospitality of the Cuban people is a constant. This is an excellent trip if you want to see as much as possible of the island in a relatively short space of time. Yes, there is a lot of time spent on the coach but the trip notes prepare you for that, and it's necessary as there's so much to pack in, and there are several two-night stays which allow time for relaxation. We visited many towns and cities, met interesting people, learned a lot of fascinating history, and - despite what we'd been led to expect - enjoyed some great food and drink. There was a good mix of people in our group, we all got on well together and even the unseasonably cool and wet weather (we went at the end of Jan) failed to spoil our enjoyment of the trip.

The trip was an extremely busy one and we did wonder what we had let ourselves in for as the first 3 days were non stop coach travel, which was pointed out in the itinerary but still a bit of a shock. The whole trip was one of contrast and the guide was excellent, giving us lots of information about the culture and the revolution. The people were delightful and friendly and we felt totally safe in all the towns and cities. Just loved all the 1950's cars and the music. Prices were OK food was cheap and I actually got fed up of Lobster. The only disappointing part of the holiday was a last minute change of the hotel on the first night. We were put in a total dive that was dirty and without aircon. A letter of complaint will be going to Exodus. Don't expect too much from the hotels but generally they were reasonably clean. the home stay being the best.

Cuba: La Isla Grande

La Isla Grande = Fantastico!

An extremely well organised trip starting and ending in Havana. Covering the entire island by land rather than taking any internal flights gives the opportunity to experience the diversity of Cuba's landscape. A range of accommodation including colonial hotels and casa particulares means a comfortable stay throughout. Knowledgeable tour guide(s) provided a superb education into Cuban history and politics through to the current day with visits to key locations. I recommend this trip to anyone wanting to understand Cuba, it's people, history, culture, creativity and energy.

La Island Grande. Cuba

Very interesting and informative trip. Decaying towns and infrastucture that are crying out for investment that should hopefully soon be available to this country. Only hope that the Cubans are able to control the surge in international interest and able to keep their wonderful independance and way of life for the better.

La Isla Grande Cuba

This tour gave a very wide coverage of Cuba from Havana to Baracoa on the far south eastern tip of the island. We learned a great deal about the history of the island, particularly the events leading up to the revolution and events following it.Also, there was emphasis on the geography, geology and ecology of the island as well as plenty of opportunity to meet and interact with the Cubans themselves-the real Cuba

Excellent trip. Lots of travelling but also lots to see and learn. A lovely set of fellow travellers made this holiday both rewarding and memorable. Freddie, our guide was Cuban and very knowledgable on the island ie current affairs, history, flora, fauna etc etc; he also had the ability to keep us informed with what we needed to know when we needed it and ensure that each day was well prepared for.
