Hello all.

Nice to hear from you. This is the first one of these trips I've been on and can't wait to go now. I've had the jabs and just need the Visa now. The weather in Vietnam looks amazing at the mo - sun sun and more sun!

Have any of you guys been to Vietnam before?

Tue, 03/16/2010 - 00:10

Hello again Steve, it's the same for me. First trip of this kind and also with the culture of VN should have a great time. Visa come through Saturday, jabs done, just purchased insurance with American Express at half the cost. Yes, the weather come rain or shine should be a lot warmer than UK. Decided not to go for malaria tabs, just the 50% deet.

I've got my Visa and I'm heading off to China next Wednesday and will head from there to  Hanoi on 17 April.  Just wondering what risk is like for Malaria at this time of year, low in China so will not need them there.  Probably will take cautious approach anyway.  Various advice sites are a bit wishy washy on risk.  From what I can work out, the cheaper the tablets the madder they make you.  Guaranteed sanity seems to require the expensive ones.  Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hello everybody!

My name is Christelle. I will be joining you in Hanoi on April 18th. Being on a trip like this is a first for me too. Still not sure about the malaria tablets. They may be necessary for Lak Lake. I was recommended Malarone tablets but they're quite expensive.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hello all, I agree with Christelle, there may be a possible risk at Lak Lake, Malarone is supposed to be the best tab overall and may be worth the cost as side effects may prove be costly if the trip is abandoned because of sickness/diarrhoea, although Maralone states this as a possible side effect too. Guess its a case of personal risk assessment. Anyway, I'm not going to worry, both risks appear to be small. Anita, good luck with your trip to China, and see you all when you are older (a little bit). Looking forward to a wonderful trip with good company.

I've been on several Exodus trips before and all have been great.  Visa arrived, jabs to come.

Anyone connecting from Manchester?

Not me Sue, travelling by rail. Just hope there is no strike. Nice to have an experienced exodus traveller on-board.

Hi Christelle, welcome aboard.

I wasn't going to bother with malaria tabs, but on the basis that everyone else is, I might have to re-consider. I've had Malerone tablets before and they didn't send me mad. There just expensive!

Visa arrived last week, so I'm pretty much good to go. I'm connecting from Heathrow if anyone wants to share a lift from the Midlands area? Failing that, I'll be on the National Express - £40 for return ticket, which is probably a lot cheaper than parking!

With regard to luggage, I guess a backpack would be most suitable?

See ya

Hello everybody,

I've decided to take malaria tablets (Malarone), but not for the whole trip. I will start a couple of days before Lak Lake. 14 tablets in total. It should be fine.

Regarding water purification, is anybody taking anything? I will only drink bottled water, but can we use tap water to brush our teeth?

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hello all, I decided to play safe and purchased maralone for the whole trip and chlorine dioxide for water purification of drinking water including teeth brushing if and when required. My view is that if you are unlucky in passing contaminated water passed your lips, then it will probably find a way to your stomach. I don't mind meeting anyone at heathrow, I guess the problem is finding each other.

I'd like to meet up at Heathrow - its a long old flight! I think we're flying from Terminal 3, so I'm sure there's somewhere obvious to meet. Failing that, we'll have to come up with a way to recognise each other. Quick question - my passport was returned with my visa stapled inside. Do I have to sign the Visa? Also, my visa starts on the 18th (the day we arrive in Vietnam) rather than the 17th when we leave London. Hopefully I've got this right?

I think we're leaving via Terminal 4.  Looking at the floor plan there is an Information Point as soon as you clear security.  Could meet there 10/10:30?  Probably best phoning Exodus with your visa queries.

Fri, 04/09/2010 - 18:37

Hello there, only a few days to go and getting quite excited. Unless there are 2 flights on the day, it's terminal 4. Steve, I think you will be OK regarding your visa. If you are entering on the 18th then the visa ought to be valid. I have one in my passport and I am not aware that it needs a signature. I should be arriving at heathrow around 9:30 and may be wearing a conical hat.

See you soon

Peter - I like your style! I might get one myself.

Yes, it is Terminal 4. My mistake! I've phoned exodus reagrding the visa and they can't see any probs. I'll perhaps double check with the airline on Monday though.

Right, I'm off to watch the Grand national. Come on Arbor Supreme or Ballyfitz!!! see you soon guys

HI everyone

I will be joining you all on this trip with my husband.

Regarding the visa, ours are due to start on 18 April , date of entry to vietnam.  We were advised they had to be valid on date of entry, so we should all be ok.

see you next week

Hello everybody!

I will be at Heathrow tomorrow morning too. It would be good if we could all meet up so that we can all be put on the same plane in case our flight needs to be rescheduled (fingers crossed it won't). My phone number is 07799 726806. I will try to bring a sign saying "Vietnam Adventure" so you can spot me.

Hello again,

I have just been informed by my travel agency (Trailfinders) that, although tomorrow's flight has been cancelled, Malaysia Airlines haven't updated their system/Web site and therefore Exodus refuse to acknowledge the cancellation. I have therefore been told that I must go to the airport (and get up at 4am!!) otherwise it will be considered as a no show on my part and I won't get my money back.

Is anybody else in this situation? Fancy some breakfast at the airport tomorrow morning? Would be nice to hear from you.

I haven't heard about Malasyia airlines.  I need to connect from Manchester so not sure what happens there.  All will become clear tomorrow, not looking forward to an early start for nothing.  Fingers crossed.

I was flying with Thai a day before the group flights but have now cancelled. The earliest Exodus could get me on another Thai flight was Thursday. So have decided to cancel. Exodus have offered a full refund. Alas, another time for Vietnam.

Hi Guys,

As I was in China until yesterday, I have been able to make it to Hanoi.  Exodus rang me yesterday.  Trip is going ahead, it is going to comprise just a Canadian Couple and myself.  Such a shame you guys cannot join, you must be so disappointed, never mind all the effort to get a Visa and Jabs etc.  I hope you can all get refunds and reschedule leave etc. I was really looking forward to meeting up.

Best Wishes

 Anita

Have fun Anita! Sorry we can't be there too!

On the subject of refunds, Exodus did say that we would get our money back but as of yet I've heard nothing. Not unexpected I guess given the number of stranded people. If anyone hears anything from them then I would be interested to know what they say?

Is anyone planning to re-schedule or are you going to get your money back?

Christelle - nice to meet you at the airport. I said breakfast would be the highlight this weekend.
