Hello all,

Who is sailing to South Georgia on the 2nd November ? I am thinking about camera kit requirements amd wondered what everyone else is planning to bring. I have a Canon 5D mk III with 24-105 and 100-400 lenses. Should I hire a 500mm as well ? What should I bring along to back my photos up to ? A laptop/notebook ?

Is anyone booked on this trip taking the " land only" option? I am looking into meeting the group in the Falklands and would like to hear from anyone doing the same. Lesley

Lesley, that's my plan too, but that's more because I work for British Airways. I plan to go on BA to São Paulo, then over to Santiago and then down to Punta Arenas, all on LAN. Other options are via Madrid to Santiago on Iberia/LAN.

Hi Guys,

I am also on this trip but I am taking the group flights all the way.

@Nick: I am taking my Nikon D700 and a range of lenses from 16 to 400m. I would hope 400mm will be long enough as we will be able to get close to the wildlife on South Georgia. I am also bringing a laptop and portable hard drive to back-up my pictures; has the added bonus of Lightroom for very quick editing (anything more and you got it wrong in the first place!)

See you there!

Greetings everyone !

I am flying down with exodus on 31 October

This is my third trip  with exodus and the first two exceeded all expectations.

I'll be bringing my Canon 5 D MARK III plus 10-20mm, 25 - 105 mm and 500 mm lenses plus  1.5 x converter, tripod and lap top. If I have room I may also bring a 70 - 200 lens as hand holding the 500 mm is quite difficult.

Paul's giving a talk on his polar trips at the Royal Institution on 25 June which I plan to attend, so if anyone's there I be delighted to meet you.

Hello Anthony,

Thanks for the info on your kit list. I have a 5D mk III as well. I am still uncertain as to whether a 100-400mm lens will be good enough as a zoom. Paul Goldstein does not think a 1.4x with my lens will be good enough, but recommends it for a 300mm. The 500mm is quite a beast ! What other accessories do we need to pack ?

Are you departing London on 31st travelling on LAN  ?  I will be spending a week on the Falklands beforehand with a friend.

It's a shame I've just seen your post as the talk sounded very interesting.

One of my patients who is a keen fisherman and salior told me today that its worth getting Neopreen inner gloves and inner socks to keep your exremities dry and consequently much warmer - it then doesn't matter if your outer gloves or socks get wet

He also recommend gloves  where you can fold back the tips to operated cameras more easily

Hope this is of interest

I'm joining the forum a little belatedly, but looking fwd to meeting all of you - never been on an Exodus trip before, though I have been on a Heritage Expeditions trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands of new Zealand which was amazing!!

Sadly I can't spend any time in the Falklands - I spent 3 weeks there a few years ago so regret it even more!  So for those of you travelling out on the 31st Oct from Heathrow (Anthony, Nick?), I hope I'll recognize you.  See you in a little under 2 weeks....   Sue

Hello soon-to-be South Georgians

Looking forward to meeting you all at Heathrow, Santiago, or on board the Vavilov.

I’ve had two years to get ready for this but I am now in a last-minute panic to get to grips with newly-upgraded camera kit.  Thanks for those links, Phil; very inspiring footage from SG and my boyfriend now gets why I have to go there!  Just to contribute to the kit discussion: I’m taking a 5D MkII with a 17-40, 24-105 and 100-400mm lenses plus a 7D to use with the 100-400 for the really long distance views if needed (crop sensor so no extender issues), plus tripod and monopod. Slightly worried about the weight of the gear to schlep ashore, so the tripod may get the boot.

Would definitely recommend taking a laptop and portable hard drive as, if similar trips are anything to go by, we’ll be notching up the pixels every moment, and it’s great to review images at the end of the day, though there are computers on board that can be used.

If the third occupant of triple-share cabin 327 can get in touch I can confirm my snoring decibels (kidding, I hope). I can vouch for the Vavilov as went around Spitzbergen on her a couple of years ago – incidentally where I met the third occupant of cabin 327 – and the Vav is the perfect vessel for this trip.

Tip if you need it: take a 4-gang extender as that way you only connect one plug to the adaptor but have four sockets for all those rechargeables.

See you soon

Jackie

Hi Jackie. I think I'm the third member of the triple cabin you are looking for. I was also on the Vavilov round Spitsbergen in 2012 and I can endorse what you say about her. This is going to be a great trip. I agree with you about the backup devices. I've got a couple just for belt and braces. I'd hate to lose any of the good shots. Hopefully I'll get some!

I'm making my own way down to Port Stanley although it looks as though I'll be on the same flight as the group from Madrid to Santiago and vice versa.

Lesley

I'm on the 15.50 from London to Madrid (Iberia) if that's any help.

Hi everyone, hope you're all back safe and sound.  For those who went on the day out to Valparaiso on Sunday, I've put together a list of the birds I saw at Vina del Mar, particularly by the sea lions, if you're interested - not a bad list for a very short stop!  Here it is:

 · Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus

·  Peruvian Booby Sula variegata
·  Neotropic Cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus
·  Inca Tern Larosterna inca
·  Southern Lapwing Vanellus chilensis
·  Long billed curlew Numenius americanus
·  Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres
·  Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus
·  Chilean Seaside Cinclodes Cinclodes nigrofumosus Endemic
·  Chilean Swallow Tachycineta meyeni

Also where we stopped on the way out I saw:
·  Austral Thrush Turdus falcklandii
·  Yellow Winged Blackbird  Agelasticus thilius thilius

(photos of them going on Flickr soon) Sue
