I am booked to head out to Egypt in September - I am trying to work out how much money to take, any ideas?  Can some of the optional excursions be paid for by credit card?  Also it is best to bring egyptian pounds or a mix of that and travellers cheques?  I have manged to get my hands on some small notes that I can use for tips when I first get there.   thanks

This is always a difficult one as you never really know how much you would spend until you are out there.  To give you an idea, alcohol is pretty expensive, however if it is souvenirs that you are after then you can always try out your bartering skills in the markets and get a significant price cut if successful.  Almost all transactions can be made with a credit card.  It is also advisable to change money out in Egypt as the exchange rate is much better out there than in England.  In terms of money for tips, on top of the optional tip at the end for the leader (the sum you choose to give is entirely personal, but as a guide, USD $4-5 per person per day would be a reasonable starting point), I would recommend changing about £20 EP into £1 EP coins as they will come in handy for smaller tips as they will not break notes for you when receiving a tip (or baksheesh).
I hope this is useful for you and please feel free to contact again if you have any other queries.
