Hi Phil, great to find someone else who is booked onto this trip! Really looking forward to it, some training climbs sound like an excellent idea, would be lovely to meet people before we go! I'm based in Leeds so lots of hills in the north but I have family in the south west so could easily arrange something down south sometime. Cheers, Becky

Im at a wedding that weekend! We could try and sort something out for August I'm pretty free all month. Scafel Pike is a great walk, hope you have a lovely time. Thats a fantastic website it looks very professional! I'm a biochemist and do Alzheimers research for a living, its a fantastic cause. I was planning on doing it for a charity but havent finally decided which yet..

I'm so excited getting all my kit together, I think I've got everything except the sleeping bag sorted..

Hi Simon, in what part of the UK are you living? Three of us (so far) are looking at arranging a meet up and climb late August if you fancy it?

Hi Phil, I'm based in  North Kent/London area so don't think I can make your warm up trek. We don't have those kind of hills down here so I have to do some long prep walks instead !

Hi everyone! Dont think I'll be able to make that weekend either I'm on a work training thing for the whole weekend (including sunday!) which isnt ideal.. if we cant get together for a hike perhaps we could meet up for a meal or soemthing in Manchester? Its only an hour from Leeds so could do a weekday evening or something?

Hows everyones kit purchasing/ training going? I think I'm sorted except the sleeping bag.. have any of you found good one to buy/hiring one?

Hiya, yea I'd be up for some kind of get together.

Training wise I've not been doing anything specific yet, I run and cycle a couple of times a week anyway - but I could do with getting some hill walking in.... try and get used to the boots and carrying a pack again.

I think ive got most of my kit together now, I still need a decent jacket for the top and sleeping bag. I'm thinking of just getting a bag liner and hiring from Exodus, the kit list talks about needing a season 4/5 bag....how often Im I going to be needing one of those after this.

Is anyone bothering with walking poles? seem a bit unnecessary to me  - but what do I know.

Then its just jabs and visa  - what the norm with the visa, can you get one there when we arrive? Im a bit wary of sending of for one before as you have to send in you passport too  - my luck they'll lose the thing.

Hi Becky, Andy

Yes definately up for meeting in Manchester...training climbs are getting difficult to sort out because of the time of year I guess. Like you Andy I've been cycling in to work etc but could really do with goijng up and down few hills. As for kit I've not really started but I'm probably going to hire the sleeping bag too...like you say Andy, I'm not sure how many times I'll need it! Had my yellow fever jab last week and it was completely painless. In terms of visa, I sent mine off to the company that Exodus recommend (Travcour)...although they did return it saying I need to resend closer the time. They kept the cheque so I suspect I'll stick with them but I did see some blogs on Exodus from people saying that you can get the visa in the airport.

I bought some poles for two reasons really - a few kit lists that I saw said they werte part of the 'essential' kit but to be honest I've had four knee ops and I think I'll probably need the extra support especially coming down.

How is everyone getting down there? I booked BA flights from Manchester a few weeks ago and they were far cheaper than the rail fare....gets me in fairly early too so I can grab my bags and check them in again.

Thinking about it, it's not that long until we go really!!

Agree on hiring the sleeping bag as it won't get much use afterwards, I will be taking poles but only because I haven't used them before and they may help. I asked Exodus about the visa situation and they said do it at the airport/border so thats what I thought of doing......I had my Yellow fever jab and yeah it was ok and certainly not as bad as the Rabies jab I had last year !!!

I've got my yellow fever jab in a few weeks, glad to hear its painless! Had the rest of them a week or so ago.. Is anyone getting the rabies jab? The travel nurse said it was just totally up to me! So far am leaning against it but havent decided..

I might go with hiring the sleeping bag then, as you say how often will you use it! I'm taking poles, although I dont usually use them everyone who has been seems to highly recommend them. With the visa I was planning on getting it at the airport, didnt even realise you could get it in advance!

Im catching the train from Leeds to Heathrow, trains are pretty regular and the flights are at nice sensible times!

The Rabies jab is expensive (£100+) I wouldn't have got it for this trip ....I had that jab for a trip last year.

Did I say the yellow fever jab was painless?? ;) No it's a doddle - tell you what though - the cost of all these mallaria and jabs mounts too! I'm not having rabies and the travel clinic recommended I check with my doctor to see if they'll write a prescription for the mallaria tablets...doing that tomorrow so I'll let you know - we'll need 20 mallorone tablets which costs way over £100.

cool well that clears up the visa. Im going to be picking up some more bits and pieces for the trip this weekend so I'll take alook at the poles then.

I haven't looked at how Im getting down there yet , just assumed I'd take the train - but sounds like fights are worth a look see too then.

Im planning on heading over to Hayfield on Sunday 21st and taking a walk up Kinder and having abit of a wander around....ease myself in

Hi guys, it was much cheaper getting a private prescription from my doctor - in all just over £50, Nomad quoted much more.

Andy, I did Kinder about a month ago (our last decent spell of weather), really enjoyed it.

Thanks for that Phill! Is anyone getting any anti-altitude sickess meds?

Also does anyone fancy meeting up in Manchester one evening for a meal? Would be great to meet before we go! How about sometime week after next (w/c 29th july)? Although if its a weeknight I'm super flexible can do any night but a Wednesday usually

Bit stuck that week, I'm already at a couple of do's (Weds and Fri) I go away for a couple of weeks on the 5th and I'm back on the 20th - could do later that week 22nd?? Asked my doctor about altitude sickness and she's climbed Kili some years ago with medical colleagues and she took them, however, she told me I needn't but that hydration is mega important...personal choice I think?

Hi

Has anyone got any ideas for power during the walk? I want to take my garmin gps, camera etc and have been looking at these solar chargers, the reviews aren't great but I dont see any other options.

Camera isn't too bad as I could just pack spare battery but the gps requires charging and only has about 8 hours of running time.
