Highlights of Northern India - Solo departure 8th April

Sun, 11/08/2009 - 11:21

Hi there

Would love to hear from anyone else booked onto this trip. This is my second trip with Exodus, but first time to India and I really can't wait! Will be meeting you all out there as I'm flying out with Virgin instead of the group flight.

Hope to hear from you soon

Hi Angela,

I am not sure if we are on the same trip as this is marked up as a singles visit but we are going on the Highlights tour on the 8th and we are one of (I understand from Exodus) 3 couples on the holiday. We have done a similar trip to Namibia four years ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The group dynamics certainly added to the experience and we stayed in touch for ages afterwards (still get Christmas cards). We are flying out on a Virgin flight a few days before the trip and staying in Delhi for our own sightseeing and acclimatisation to the culture!  Will speak more when it has been confirmed that there are not 2 trips on the same departure. Are you in Delhi for a time or arriving on the same day as the group?

Hi Alan and Chris

Good to hear from you. I'm pretty certain we are on the same trip. Singles or couples? It doesn't bother me either way as I just love meeting new people of all ages. I'll be flying out on the same day as the group flight and I should be arriving into Delhi at 11am on the 9th (which is after the group flight). I'm a little nervous that the flight will be delayed or something and I'll be left behind when you go to Jaipur. Is this your first trip to India?

Hi Angela,

Yes we are on the same trip. I have enquired at Exodus and I understand the trip is full, 5 couples and 6 singles. We have researched the trip well and feel ready to go already. We have obtained our visas through the Indian embassy and saved a bit of cash by not going through the recommended agent. Quite an easy process really, have you got your visa yet?

We haven't been to India before but we are quite experienced travellers having been to Peru, Namibia, Kenya, Canada and California in the last few years. We love doing our own thing on holiday and are really looking forward to doing a group thing in India. We have booked an early flight so that we can get acclimatised and do our own sightseeing in Delhi. There does not seem to be much time on the itinerary to do this. Have you been advised to take Malaria tablets? We have bought Boots travel pro-biotics to take. We have been advised that these will help avoid some of the famous stomach troubles.

Where do you live? We are near Doncaster.

My visa is in the post as we speak. Good idea about the probiotics. I swear by the Natures best acidophilus extra 10. They kept me well in Mozambique which is notorious for stomach trouble and also I was one of the few that didn't get sick on a trip to Kenya & Tanzania last year. http://www.naturesbest.co.uk/Acidophilus-Extra-10-P541/

I haven't been to the doctor/travel clinic as I'm up-to-date with all of my jabs.  I wasn't planning on taking anti-malarials, just some damn good insect repellent. The NHS fit for travel website suggests that where we are going is low to no risk. Have you been advised to take them then?

I live in Cambridge by the way.

Hi again Angela,

We went to the nurse last evening to check innoculations etc and had to have another tetanus injection as ours had elapsed. She did however recommend anti-malarials and charged us £10 each for a private prescription. We have looked on the same site as you and seen no to low risk, but may still get some Maralone "just in case" although it is very expensive (£2.25 a tablet). What are you doing about taking money? We are looking at travellers cheques although we have never used them before. Even in other countries with closed currencies we have managed with ATMs but we are not sure that due to the travelling nature of this trip that we can rely on this.

I don't think I'll be using travellers cheques. I'll rely on a combination of taking sterling, debit and credit cards as I usually do.

I requested a list of hotels for this tour from Exodus. The hotel list for our trip isn't finalised yet, but these are the hotels that they used for a February tour: Hotel Glitz-Jaipur, Ankur Resort-Ranthambore, Hotel Pushp Villa-Agra, Hotel Surya-Varanasi and Hotel Singh Sons-Delhi. The hotel list for our trip should be either the same, or with some small amendments.

Still haven't made my mind up about anti-malarials. Although there's low to no risk where we're going, it's pretty close to places where there is a higher risk. Last time I checked, mosquitoes didn't pay much attention to state boundaries.

Our Malarone has arrived and cost £94.50 (for 21 tablets each) from Travelpharm on line so we will be using it. I hear what you say about mozzies not understanding boundaries and we are better safe than sorry. Thanks for the hotel details. We have had a look and they are better than we expected to be honest. The poor review on the tiger eserve hotel is more like what we thought we would get. Please let us know if and when Exodus confirm the details with you.

Only a few weeks to go now!

Have Exodus been in touch with you yet? I had a couple of phone calls from them this week sorting out how I'm going to join the group. It seems that the group will be travelling directly to Jaipur from the airport now instead of meeting at the hotel. They're going to attempt to wait for me at the airport (as my flight gets in 1hr15mins after the group flight), but if my flight is delayed and they have to leave I'm going to have to take a private transfer all the way to Jaipur (5hrs). Exodus will pay for that as they've changed the itinerary since publishing the trip notes. I still wish I'd booked a flight for a day earlier though!!

Are you guys sorted for the trip now?

Hi Angela,

Exodus sent us some joining instructions and we considered meeting the bus in Delhi before it goes to the airport but it seems our hotel in Delhi is nearer to the airport than to their hotel so we will meet the group there. We will have to adopt some delaying tactics to make sure the bus waits for you. We will see what we can do. We are all set to go now but have got some late tips from looking at the other trip comments (5th April departure) which mentioned taking a cotton liner for sleeping bags and some other more feminine tips. Have a look at the postings for yourself. Looking forward very much to the trip now and to meeting you.
