Hi

I've just booked this trip and am wondering who else is booked on this trip yet.  I'm travelled alone since my boyfriend can't make the trip so it will be nice to hear from some other people already booked onto this trip.

Hi,

We are booked on the group flight, just hope there is no chaos around Heathrow that weekend. Getting some jabs next week, then just need to sort out the packing.

Hello,

Now that we are through Christmas we are starting to look forward to the tip. Need to get final jabs, decide what extra bits we need etc. We are also on the flight from Heathrow. Not really looking forward to trying to sleep on the overnight flight out but am sure it will be worth it when we arrive.

Hi,

Finally have passports back with Kenya visa in them, was getting worried they were stuck in a pile of mail somewhere. Have had another Hep B jab, need booster in 2 weeks time. Will be in London for couple of days before flight to get in the holiday mood. Not looking forward to the overnight flight either.

Probably need more SD cards for my camera, and decide how much in US dollars to take. Hard to think about warm weather clothing when it's cold and miserable outside.

Hi all,

I was on this trip last September. Personally, I took (I think) 100 US dollars with me, and then got local currency at the airport on arrival. It's actually Kenyan currency you'll find you spend most of. As I recall I just used my dollars for paying for the visa on arrival, some beers at the camp and then on bits and pieces in the airport coming back.

If you're going on the balloon flight, they've got a credit card machine available when you get to the site, so you don't have to pay in cash if you've got plastic.

Feel free to drop me a line if there's anything you'd like to know. You'll have a fantastic time and I'm reallly jealous!

 Cheers.

Hi Mark,

The photos on your site are really impressive, hope we see as much wildlife. I enjoyed reading your blog and the video as well. We plan on doing the balloon flight, was that easy to arrange when there or did you book it beforehand? Other forums suggest it is very popular and places cannot be guarenteed.

Were you able to recharge batteries at the camp or did you have enough spares? Can use AA batteries if necessary but will take charger with me.

Hi Alun and Heike,

Thanks very much, much appreciated. I would definitely recommend the balloon flight. It was really easy to arrrange. We were told that we didn't have to arrange anything before we arrived in Kenya and could do book there and then. On either the first or second day, our guide asked for a show of hands for who wanted to do the flight. He then went and phoned ahead to the balloon company, gave the numbers and confirmed with us. We didn't have any problems with availability, but I don't know if we were lucky with the booking. It might be worth checking with Exodus.

Be prepared for an early (ie 4am!) start, but it's worth it as you might get to see some of the nocturnal wildlife going about their business (we saw hyenas).

Charging batteries was no problem at all. I assume you're staying at Kicheche (I think I read that Exodus might be using a different camp this year) but if so, Kicheche had a table in the main dining tent with 3 or 4 4-way power adapters (standard 3-pin UK sockets) and people generally plugged things in when we got back from the day and retrieved them later in the evening after dinner. I don't think we were ever fighting over availability, so it was never a problem.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks for the info, the balloon flight will certainly be the highlight of this holiday, so hopefully we can get a space. Did you do any of the other optional walks, etc?

Have had eticket and final details so countdown to departure has started. Just waiting for Superdrug to restock Malerone, they seem the cheapest at £2.10 a tablet.

Best wishes,

Yes, we all did the nature walk at Lake Elementaita. If you get Joseph as your guide, you're in luck. He's a mine of information and a really nice guy.

Aboust half of us did the walking safari on the last day, where we went out with an armed ranger and got chance to see the Mara from outside the confines of the safari van. Definitely worth doing.

For what it's worth, I was on Malarone and didn't have any problems or side effects at all.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Mark  for all your information and advice. Have packed now and are heading to London tomorrow, then flying out on Sat night. Hope to see plenty of wildlife and have a great time.

Will soon see the rest of those on this holiday in Kenya.

Best wishes,
