ok, not really a destination question but does anybody know why we need a 45L or 'at least 40L' backpack for the snowshoeing trip?

i'm only 5'2" and for me a 40L backpack is pretty big, i walk a lot in scotland with a far smaller pack. our trip doesn't involve an overnight stay so what will i be putting in this great big pack???

 thanks,

L.

p.s. we're going on 27th december not 20th but the website won't let me choose that option for some reason.

Hi,

The reason for needing at least a 40L backpack on this trip (and is pretty userful for all snowshoeing trips) is that any smaller size of pack very seldom has the side straps that are needed to carry the snowshoes. A 40L backpack also has enough capcity to put in extra layers as the day heats up.

Hope this helps and you enjoy the adventure.

All the best, Andy

I have snowshoed with Exodus several times quite happily with a 25 litre backpack. The essential feature is strapping or webbing so that you can secure your snow shoes to the outside of your pack if you are walking in an area where you don't need them. Andy is right about space in your pack to put extra layers if you remove them, but if you take thin layers a 25 L pack will be more than sufficient to hold them if you work up enough steam to want to take them off, which in my experience, you will! My other tip: Take a thermos flask. A hot drink when you stop to admire a great view is unbeatable!

thanks richard, that's what i suspected. i will use my own common sense - i am looking at backcountry ski/snowboard packs which are all around 25-35L but have straps for carrying the board/skis which i imagine will take shoes too, and i want one with an insulated sleeve for a hydration pack so that the tube doens't freeze - this will be really useful for me for skiing too.
