hey gang

i do beleive i will be your tour leader for this trip

dont bring too much stuff with you, you wont wear it.  you need something warm for the top of the ngorongoro crater as it can be freezing up there sometimes.  you will need conservative dress for zanzibar, shoulders and knees should be covered.

there's been some trouble with sea uchins at the beach, so some kind of protective footwear would be good.

food prices on zanzibar have gone up a lot in the last year, i reckon to budget about $30 for food, and more if you drink a lot of beer.

you will get a better exchange rate for large USD bills, but its a good idea to bring a couple of hundred in smaller notes.  DO NOT rely on an ATM card for money, half the time there is no power to the machine wont work.

looking forward to meeting you all

love linda - please bring twiglets!

Hi to our great and powerfull leader,

How much cash do you think we should take, and do we need any african money? And how many bags of twiglets to keep you happy? Sad day for me as my landrover has died and needs to be fixed by a main dealer, looking at a £600 bill before my holiday! Not a good start to the year.

Yes we fly out at 19.00 hrs from terminal 4

I will be staying at the Holiday inn M4 J4, on the friday night, I will be the the one sat sobbing in his beer after paying my repair bill.

sorry to hear about your landie, great fun but always going wrong.

one bag of twiglets will be plenty, thank you!

as for money, hard to say really.   there's a couple of optionals you can do, the kili climb being the most expensive at $90, and diving on zanzibar, otherwise its mostly for drinks and snacks (not that oyu need them, because we feed you well enough) and any souvenirs you might want.     US dollars dont go of, so you can always keep them for another trip, or change them back again at home, if you bring too much.    for zanzibar, its better to over estimate, i was spending $30 a day last week.  if you're a beer drinker then aim for maybe $50 a day.   its hard to advise how much as everyone is different but at a guess i'd say  maybe $700 to $800 of spending money.  that would include the $200 for zanzibar, the kili walk and a dive.   however if you want to do the balloon ride and havent pre booked it will cost you $499!  and i cant guarantee i can get you a space as its always busy

i'm off on a trip tomorow, so wont be checking mail as often over the next 2 weeks, but i'll keep an eye out incase you have any more questions.

good luck with the repairs

Am I right in thinking we can arrange all our visa's as we need them, whilst away, as I havent sorted them out here.

HI

YES, YOU CAN GET VISA'S ON ENTRY,  $25 FOR KENYA AND $50 FOR TANZANIA.    ALSO MAKE SURE TOU HAVE A VALID YELLOW FEVER CERTIFICATE AS THERE HAS BWEN A OUTBREAK IN UGANDA AND THE TANZANIANS WILL NOT LET YOU IN WITHOUT ONE.

SORRY THIS IS IS CAPITALS, I'M DOING THE BY PHONE AND DONT KNOW HOW TO SWITCH IT OFF!

WOULD ONE OF YOU MIND TO BRING A CAMERA LENS CAP OUT FOR ME IF I GET IT POSTED TO THE OFFIC  IN LONDON, THEY CAN SEND IT ON TO YOU. PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I CAN GET IT SORTED.

THANKS

Hi, my name is john frank, they should have all my address if not i will give them a ring, its no problem, ps my rover only cost me £300 to get fixed not the £600 i thought it would, so i could afford to buy 2x drums of twiglets!. hi john

apparently because you booked through and agent and not directly, the london office do not have your full details, so they wont post the lens cap to you.   thanks for the offer though

anyone else out there that booked directly with exodus able to help me out please with bringing a lens cap for me?

We booked some time ago, but have only just signed up for the forum and are getting ourselves ready for the trip. How do we prebook the Balloon Ride? Should we just call Exodus and do it directly?

hi guys,

i did this trip last february and I WANT TO GO BACK!!! It was the trip of my life - you will see so many incredible things!!

And Linda is a STAR!!

Take lots of loo roll and wet wipes and anti-bacterial gels and wipes and plenty of rehydration salts!!! and ladies, a good idea is some leave in conditioner for your hair rather than the normal stuff, as they do recommend bio-degradable shampoos etc (the travel wash is actually pretty good).

if you get car sick take ginger tablets and / or travel sickness wristbands - they help - there are some long trips on the truck.

make sure you've got a good head torch with a good range!!

don't take too many too light coloured clothings, as they will get quite dirty and stained. dark blue attracts mozzies and tsetse flies, so also not the best colour, especially when driving through the tsetse fly area.

don't bother with taking travel books - the truck has loads of them in it's 'library'.

can't think of anything else useful right now... let me know if i can help out with any other questions and HAVE FUN!!! (I'm so envious....)

Thanks john, you're a star.     you can bring a handheld, if its small, it shouldnt be too much trouble.  this is a once in a life time opportunity, you dont want to be disappointed by not bringing all your gadgets with.    my friend has ordered the lens cap, so it should be with you in the next week or so.

David and Avril, it is now exodus policy not to directly book the balloon ride from London.  i can make a phone call from this end and see if there is space for the 2 of you.  the price locally is $499.  these things get booked up weeks in advance, and you'll be taking a chance if you wait till you get here.

Hey Clarissa, how you doing?

Hi Linda! I'm well, thanks - still dreaming of Africa and want to return - should be heading to Kenya in December for a friend's wedding in Navaisha and hope to combine this with a trip of some sort. Am off to Sri Lanka this February for my big 3-0. I'm sure it will be amazing, but I doubt anything can beat the trip we had last year!! How are you? Still working with Chris? I think of that trip so often - you guys made it amazing!!

Wed, 01/19/2011 - 19:22

i recommend buying the travel packs of loo roll (basically, without the cardboard roll in the middle), they're nice and small and won't take much space in your bag - you can buy them in boots and travel shops and most supermarkets have them now. it's better to take too much than not enough - i remember ending up sharing my rolls with others who had run out!! i think i took about 10 rolls of the travel loo rolls, which sounds like a lot, but they're not full rolls and i did share - they were all gone by the end of the trip!!

another good thing to take is a thin shawl - quite a few of the girls on our trip used them to cover our shoulders when neccessary (esp. in Zanzibar) and it can be used as a sort of sarong on the beach.

if you're taking digital cameras and plan on taking LOTS of photos (i took 3500!!) it's best to take lots of memory cards with smaller memories rather than just a few with larger memories, as 1.) the camera slows down when the memory card gets full and when you're trying to take shots of moving animals you might miss the moment and 2.) if you lose one memory card, you lose a lot more photos if you have the larger memory cards.

binoculars are a good idea, too, unless you're planning on looking through a massive zoom camera lens the whole time anyway.

if you do encounter children begging (and undoubtedly you will) and also for when you visit the masai village: it's nice to take pens / pencils for them for their school.

madmadge, you can buy loo roll here, we have supermarkets!

game viewing in the serengeti and ngorongoro is very good right now, the migration is on its way back down from the mara.   so i'm sure you will all be taking plenty of photos.

clarissa, you need to visit us in namibia next.     chris is at home right now for his sisters wedding, so i'm with different crew - all equally as good though!

see you all very soon

Hi Linda, can you tell me when we land, do we get to go to any of the supermarkets, if so i will leave loo rolls until we get there. I am keep repacking and cutting down on things to keep in the airline limit, but as it is all i will be taking to wear is 2 pair of undies and a hat!

you can pretty much get a shower every day, but it might not be with hot water.    we wont be going to a supermarket for a couple of days, but we will get some loo roll to get you started, so dont panic, you'll be ok!

avril, i'll make a call to see if there is space, you will pay the day before the flight.

Sun, 01/23/2011 - 15:30

Thanks for yor quick reply, any idea how many people r in our group??? I cant believe that in 2 weeks I'll actually be out there, cant wait, so need a holiday and some sun now, wots the weather like out there now?

Hi madmadge,

As Linda said, you have the opportunity to shower pretty much every day - even when it's cold water, it doesn't feel so bad, as it's generally quite hot anyway. The heat of the day tends to warm up the water, so it's never really cold. But don't expect squeaky clean showering facilities... take some flip flops for showering! For the times you don't get to shower, wet wipes are a god send!

Thanks for following up with the balloon ride. We'll keep our fingers firmly crossed!

there's 20 in the group, so its a full trip.    should be good though, coz you'll have lots of different people to play with.

weather during the day has been stupidly hot, with the odd rain shower - nothing major and not too bad at night.  having said that, it was freezing cold last night!   bring a fleece or similar with you, and if that turns out to be not enough, you can always buy a masai blanket - then you'll blend in like a local.    the blankets are warm, and make a good souvenir.

see you soon

i'm sure you will al be well prepared.  all i would say is that you do not need to bring that much stuff with you, it a camping trip, so you will get dirty, most people wear the same clothes for a couple of days and then change, and there are opportunities for doing laundry.  the smaller your clothes the more room you will have for souvenirs!!!

oh, and if you can squeeze some wine gums in as well as twiglets, that would be fantastic

no, we carry 200 litres of treated water, so you dont need to waste money on that.  you dont need a mozzie net either.
