Hi,

I've recently booked this trip and was wondering if there's anyone else out there that's booked on it too?

it'd be great to share some tips (or in my case, gather tips, as i'm new to this) and the excitement and get to know who else i'll be travelling with!

Hi Ali,

I can't believe it's only about a month and a half away now - it's so exciting!

have you had all your jabs? I think I've had all of mine, just need to sort out the malaria tablets in January. I'm not really sure what to do about the Visa's though - to get them in advance or at the airport. I'd prefer to get them at the airport, hoping that'll be less hassle. what about you?

Have you been to Africa before? It'll be my first trip there and I have no clue what clothes to take or what sort of kit - do you or your friend have any tips to share?

Hi both,

wow, only about 6 weeks to go - sooo exciting!! Getting my last jab next week (yellow fever) then like you clarissa sorting the malaria tablets in jan. I have been fairly organised and sorted my visa for kenya already, and am probably going to sort the tanzania one out too before I go.  With regards to clothes, not really sure what to take.  Jon sounds like he knows what he's talking about so may take his advice.  In my head I think its going to be warm, so want to take vest tops and shorts, but then I have a trendancy to have reactions to mossi bites, so will prob invest in some longer trs and tops.  To be honest I need to read the guide again and see what they recommend.

Ooooo so excited talking about it!!  I think its going to be an amazing trip.  Have done one trip with Exodus before and really enjoyed it (went sea kayacking in Turkey last year which  was great fun).

Are you both flying from London?  We should try and meet up in the airport before hand.

Jon - what are packing cubes???

Sun, 01/10/2010 - 21:32

Less than one month to go! Looks like 17 people are on the trip as only 3 spaces left now. I got some stuff today including a mosquito net, always useful on these trips, could have done with one in the hotel in Turkey last October! I did not need any vaccinations and have got my Malaria tablets.  Unfortunately I'll have to leave a few hours early from Zanzibar as the group regional flight to Nairobi was fully booked when I booked the trip. I'll be on the same flight back to London though. Also I'm not doing the balloon flight. Bought a guidebook for Zanzibar, apparently the best place to go snorkelling is Chumbe Island. I am also going to get a wildlife guide.

i can't believe it's now less than a month to go, i'm starting to panic a little that i'm running out of time to sort things out!

wow, 17 people on the trip - that's cool. the more the merrier, right?

i won't be doing the balloon trip either - it was just a bit pricey for me in addition to everything else, but i'm sure the game drive will be equally as exciting!

i'll be flying from heathrow too. We should definitely arrange to meet somewhere at the airport. Best before checking in, so some of us - especially lone travellers, like me - can sit together with each other?

does anyone know where to buy bio-degradable soap and shampoo? i've found bio-degradable washing liquid/cream for clothes, but not the other stuff.

Hi Both,

Any idea how much money you are taking with you?  What currency and cash or travellers cheques?

Hi everyone,

I have booked this trip just last week and thus waiting time till departure is shorter for me than for you but I am as excited as you are for this trip! It is great to learn already some tips from your comments. I will be travelling from Heathrow and also for me this is the first time I am travelling with exodus.

hello everyone!

i'm so excited now - starting to panic a bit as time is running out to buy and arrange everything for the trip.

is anyone going to be taking any 'normal' clothes at all (esp. for zanzibar) or just 'safari' clothes? i'm trying to pack as light as possible, but also don't want to be left without things i should have taken.

what are you guys doing about visas?

Hi, yeah I am taking 2-3 lightweight short sleeve shirts for non-safari days and Zanzibar to try and keep cool. Today it is max 36/min 27 degrees in Zanzibar with over 50% humidity! Not going to bother with jeans or any heavy cotton clothes. Although don't forget the rim of the Ngorogoro crater where we camp is 2300m high so will need good fleece and thermals. Also I am going to take a poncho as when it rains at the equator it is very heavy.

I am going to bring enough dollars to buy the Visas at the airport and border.

Also I chatted to Exodus today and the trip notes are incorrect when they talk about storing your luggage in a locker, it is under your seat.

hi, I am planning to arrange visas on the border and as far as I know there should not be any problem. As regards to the cloaths, I will follow the rule - to take only the most practical staff with me. I was a bit confused by that info on the lockers for our belonging. Nevertheless, i guess that my old backpack should not create any problems for keeping my things safe during our trip.

hi all, wow 2 weeks to go!!  I to am panicking!!  I dont seem to have any safari clothes!!  eeekk!!  Not entirely sure how much im taking, probably too much as i do every other time i go away! Mind you it depends what I can find in my wardrobe.  Im taking a couple of 'normal' dresses for Zanzibar but nothing too special. Ah I just remembered, it does say in my guide book that we may need to take some clothes to cover up sometimes due to Zanzibar being muslim, so will take a cardi or something.

Re visas - ive got mine already.  But sounds like it will be fine to do it at the airports/borders anyway so I wouldnt worry.

 Ooooo Im soo excited!

have been 'safari shopping' today and spent a fortune but now feel i have the right stuff for safari - not things i would have found in my normal wardrobe! you get 15% off at nomad shops when you mention exodus, which is great! just need to sort out the smaller things now and am less panicked! still not entirely sure what 'normal' stuff to take for zanzibar, but we'll see...

can't wait to meet you all and get on that plane!

hi again,

what are you guys doing regarding shoes / sandals? i've got some sturdy, but well ventilated shoes, but unsure about sandals, i.e. what type? safari style or 'normal'??

Clarissa

You want some reasonably rugged adventure/sports sandals. I am going to take my Keane sandals and I never travel anywhere without some light flip-flops as well for showers, chilling out etc.

Cheers

ok, so now i'm almost insanely excited... in one week we will actually be in kenya!! for those of you travelling on the group flight from heathrow - let's meet up before check-in somewhere at heathrow (what terminal are we flying from??). we need to check in by 4pm, so meeting at 3.30 / 3.45pm would probably be a good idea and then to head to check in together?? any idea's where is good place to meet? i haven't flown from heathrow in a while and can't remember what it's like there.

oh no, have you seen the weather this week?  it appears to be raining all week!!  Boooo!!  Hopefully theywill get all the rain out of the way this week so when we get there it will be dry.

Soooo excited, this week is going so so slowly!  Must start packing and remember to start my malaria tablets on Friday.

Wed, 02/03/2010 - 12:28

Hi hopefully will just be heavy showers not prolonged rain. Will have poncho at the ready. The landscape should be quite green and not too dry and dusty.  I am only going to start taking my tablets on day 3 as the Kenyan highlands are not malarial. I'll try and do most of my packing tonight and make sure I tick off everything, saves last minute panic!

Hi,

I just arrived in London from Riga, Latvia, and I have completed already the most demanding task -packing. I will follow Jon's advice to check in via website.HoweverI will be at the airport at 15:45 to meet you, guys. I hope that the rain will not bother us when we will land in Nairobi on Sunday. Looking forward to seeing you all,
