Hi all,

I'm booked on to the Inca & Amazon TPJ trip on 5th May ... are there any fellow trip-goers on the forum? I'm a solo traveller, and although this isn't my first trek it is my first without meeting anyone before departure. Eep!

Need to start thinking about vaccinations I suppose........and I'm right that there's no visa necessary, aren't I?

Hi both,

I can see that the other 16 in the group are really scociable :)

As a new traveller with Exodus and someone who normally likes my creature comforts can you offer any advice on trekking/camping and any general advice?

Looking forward to meeting up in 3 weeks.

Nigel

Hi Nigel!

I've travelled with Exodus before, to India and Nepal. It will be GREAT!

OK, so first things first, I've checked and there's no need for a visa. I will check on what vaccinations are needed this week (the majority of them need to be done 10 days - 2 weeks in advance).

As for advice for trekking/camping, I'd say:

  • Pack layers, i.e. lots of t-shirts, some long sleeve tops and a fleece or two. Nights and early mornings will be cold (I know we'll be doing Machu Picchu at dawn, so it will be pretty fresh!) so I'm taking a pair of gloves and a hat too.
  • A waterproof jacket is always a good idea (or at least some kind of cagool or rain poncho, but then again you can buy a rain poncho there)
  • A hat and sunglasses might be a good idea
  •  Hand disinfectant always comes in handy (you can get little bottles in Boots), as are wet wipes (esp. if we're camping), tissues
  • Mosquito repellent and suncream
  • Comfy walking shoes, preferrably ones that are already worn in (if you buy new ones you risk blisters on the trip and that won't be a good idea if we're covering >10km a day up on the Inca Trail)
  • Talking of blisters, a first aid kit with plasters, germolene, paracetamol, etc. might be a good idea
  • A water bottle (or two) is a GREAT idea (wish I'd had one when I went to India)
  • I'm taking a head torch (you never know...esp. in the jungle!!)
  • I will probably take one of those silk sleeping bag linings (linen might not always be clean, so you can slip into the lining and be sure you're clean and protected)
  • Sweets. I REALLY craved chocolate and sweets when I was in India and didn't get a chance to buy any. This time I'm taking supplies!

That's all I can think of right now, but if I think of anything else I'll log back in and let you know!!!

By the way, I'll be arriving on the 4th...I'm assuming I'll meet you at the hotel on Saturday.

GETTING EXCITED NOW!!!!!!!!!!

:-)

Hi Mei,

So we must be on the same flight from Amsterdam to Lima (because I also get in at 18:00 on the 4th). It would be great to meet up at the airport, if not in Amsterdam then in Lima, and we could share a taxi to the hotel together. How does that sound?

Rather than post mobile phone numbers on the forum, would you like to email me your number to my hotmail account (thehousemouse@hotmail.co.uk) and I'll email mine back. Might be the easiest way of finding eachother.

OMG - yes, only ten days!!!!!!!!!!

Oooooops....sorry, the page wasn't responding, so I thought it might have been because of my email address, so resent without it. Obviously wasn't the problem! SORRY for the multiple posts there!

Hi, me again!!

Mei, I've just checked the hotel and there's actually a shuttle bus that runs from the airport, but not sure if it's free. Do you speak any Spanish??

Hi everyone

Two more travellers checking in. Only week to go now, I guess we're all very excited now. We are on Fri evening flight form Heathrow (via Madrid). Anybody else on the same flight?

See you all very soon.

Hi Joanna - I've booked a transfer with Exodus, as I couldn't be bothered with taxis. I'm sure you could join the transfer no problems. There'll be a man with an Exodus sign at arrivals.

Sadly my Spanish is pretty ropey, might spend a portion of the flight genning up on it!

How much cash is everyone taking over?

Sat, 04/28/2012 - 13:11

Hi Mei!

Didn't realise you could book the shuttle...They didn't tell me that when I spoke to them on the phone and told them I was there a day earlier....Perhaps I should let them know that I'd also like to join you on the shuttle, just to be covered (got your email by the way - will reply there with my mobile number!)

Regarding cash, I was thinking around USD 500? And then get some more out at some point while we're there??? I don't want to be carrying too much with me....

What type of luggage are you taking? I was reading the notes and they were suggesting some kind of duffle bag...I've got one of those holdalls with wheels - should be OK, right (as opposed to a hard case)? I'll also take a smaller duffle bag and my daily rucksack.

Hi Edyta and Colin!!!! Looking forward to meeting you too on Saturday! :-D

I'll be taking a big old rucksack, rather than a hard case. And a little rucksack as hand luggage / daily bag. Starting to worry I won't be able to cram everything into my bag though - what's the weight limit on airlines nowadays?!

Hi all

Exodus recommends that luggage is no more then 20kg, but you can always use your hand luggage to carry more staff.

Haldall with wheels should be ok, but we have to use kitbag provided (or any other duffle bag) for Inka Trail.

Money - I'll do the same around $500 and card.

Mon, 04/30/2012 - 16:38

Thanks both - I will take my soft holdall with wheels then, and yes, I've already put a soft duffle for the trek plus the small everyday rucksack. Will definitely not pack 20kg worth - want some space to buy a couple of things!!
