Hi Ann

I am going on the trip, departing on the group flight - really looking forward to it, it sounds a nice mix of activity and relaxation.

Hi Helen,

Nice to talk you. We are travelling from Scotland so not on the group flight. We are flying from

Glasgow via Amsterdam to Delhi and will meet up with the group there.

Really looking forward to the trip too, haven't been to India before, but it's been on the wish list for years! It does sound like a great way to see a lot in a short space of time. Haven't been with Exodus before have you?

Hi Ann - thanks for email and sorry for slow reply. I have not been with them before but a few friends have and have spoken very highly! It was a bit of a random choice for me - new job that shuts down for 2 weeks over Xmas and new year, plus a lot of annual leave to take, and warm and sunny sounded very appealing.

Sorry, I have been slow in replying too.

I emailed Exodus last week  asked about temperatures..they said it would probably be 15-20 deg during the day but down to 5-10 deg at night, so packing a jumper or two. Anyway a lot warmer than it will be back at home!

Getting the Visa sorted this week and injection top ups next week. Who says we are counting the days!

hi Ann - thanks for that - good to know. I knew it was cool at night but thought bit warmer in day, so I will add an extra set of warmer clothes to the list. I am really looking forward to it, certainly warmer and sunnier than Brussels at that time of year!

Visa and vacs all sorted. I am unsure about the spending money situation though. Any tips?

Hi Josie - well done for having your visa - I was a dope and only spotted this yesterday - hopefully between DHL and Travcour it will be sorted in time! I know when I went to India for work (2008) , dollars were slightly easier to change than pounds, and I recall that we could get cash out of machines, but we were in the business area of Chennai, so not sure if that is a good comparison. I think I saw on the guidance that they suggested about £15 a day for meals, but can't remember exactly - but I do remember seeing something advising on amounts. I was thinking of bringing as much cash as my insurance will allow in $ but maybe with a few £ too.

Gosh, is it only 3 weeks today - the time has just flown? Are you on the group flight? I will be on that one, (ha, well, assuming my visa arrives in time!) Look forward to meeting you on the trip (hopefully!).

Still waiting on the visa's coming..thats nearly 3 weeks.  We were thinking about how much and what currency to take with us..so thanks for that info, think wewill bring a mixture of $ and £ and hope for cash machines too.

Look forward to meeting you both.

Thanks for the info.

I found Travcour to be excellant and emailed to thank them when my finally visa arrived. I am now just waiting for my post office credit card to come through. Martins Money Savings Tips says its one of the best to use when travelling abroad.

Any ideas on snacks to pack?

..... and what size suitcase  - or a large rucksack?

Anonymous
Sun, 12/11/2011 - 16:41

I will have a v large case as I'll be visiting family and friends over Christmas and won't be home before the trip, so v complicated packing! That of course is assuming my visa comes through, which is certainly not a given - fingers crossed.

Visa's are through! That was 3 weeks in total. So definately going.

Taking a suitcase with wheels..bulky but always overpack so nothing new there. We will have to lug our cases into a a different hotel/bus every day so should try and be sensible. We are to take a towel as they cannot guarantee that every hotel will have one.

Not sure about snacks might pack some emergencey chocolate/jelly babies.

Hi Ann - where did you pick up that they may not have towels? I didn't see that so worrying I have missed yet another source of useful information! Well done on getting your visas - that must be a relief. Did you go through Travcour or directly?

Hi

It was either on an email, or in FAQ?'s...Sorry can't remember now but it has stuck in the memory. We applied directly for the Visa's..it appeared cheaper, but I don't think it was in the end?..How have you applied?..

Hi Ann/Helen

This is such a useful forum - Travcour is brilliant. I'm glad you got your Visa's sorted out.

My case is rather large too I'm afraid - and has wheels, but for 2 weeks away I think i'll need it. I'll then take a small rucksack for hand luggage.

Must put towel on my list - I read that too somewhere.  Think i'll read through the info again.

I am on the group flight with another lady I know.

Hi Josie/ Ann - yeah, I am having a nightmare packnig for a week UK and then India after that. Not sure we'll get chance to do any washing as we are moving around so much. I am on group flight too, so hopefully we might see each other then, with our exodus luggage labels!

Are either of you taking malaria tablets? I have some from a trip a few months ago where I didn't actually need them but haven't managed to check yet if they are needed - I think not, but if you have found the answer I'd be really grateful to know.

See you soon

My Practice Nurse said they were not necessary for that part of India so I am not taking them.

£ or $ - (I have been told $)

what do you think?

Anonymous
Mon, 12/19/2011 - 18:10

Hi Josie - I do recall dollars being easier when I went for work, but it is a few years ago now and that may just have been our hotel, but I have a recollection you could pay in some shops with dollars, but not in pounts, but it is a while ago.... I am taking both, but more dollars and small bills. If you want to touch base at Heathrow, I can let you have my mobile - I think you said you were on the group flight? I know Ann isn't as they need to connect. Not long now - it's getting exciting, but blimey it is hard packing for a week in the UK (Christmas and all) then nearly 2 weeks out there - I need to be more ruthless!

At the moment we have only £'s and no dollars..so might change half into dollars,  but time is running out to get organised. It's getting very close now and really looking forward to stopping work.  I never know what to take with me, so everything but the kitchen sink as usual!. Hope you both have a great Christmas and look forward to meeting you in Delhi...

Fri, 12/23/2011 - 13:01

Hi there,

Might be a bit late but I am just back from a cycling tour of this region and had some thoughts on your comments above.

Firstly re temperature - we heard it went down to 5 degrees at night but Delhi on Sunday morning was 4 degrees and nights felt even colder - I had a fleece and one pair of long trousers but all of us wished we had a few warmer things to wear in the evenings. The hotels don't have heating and some were very cold. We did have towels everywhere (even the 'basic hotels')

Everyone in our group took £. It was no easier/ harder to exchange £ than $. Exodus advised us to change money at the airport but we actually got a better rate at money-changers in town (under the guidance of the guides). If I was going again I'd change some at the airport and do the bulk later. I didn't need to show my official receipt when changing money back when I left.

People did have some trouble with ATMs - both locating them and also with using them. If you plan to do that then definitely advise your bank before you leave though one or 2 of our group still had difficulties at some times.

Hope you all have a fab time

Great to have info re currency and temperature - thanks v much!

Josie - sorry for late reply - away from home and has been a job getting internet access - my mobile is a UK number - 07971 376028. Will be great to catch up at Heathrow! I get a train that arrives in London 2.30 so probably very early at the airport, but wanted to allow plenty of contingency! See you soon
