Hi Brian

We're out here and yes we booked for the same trip. Just trying to get all our gear together - came across a problem with the iodine water purifier tablets/drops so have had to for the Chlorine Dioxide tablets which I have been assured are ok.We shall be flying down from Manchester as we are in Lancashire and picking up with the rest of the folks at Heathrow. Where abouts are you ffrom??/

Hi

Good to hear from some-one else on the trip. I'm flying down to Heathrow with BA from Manchester and joining the group flight there, so look out for the Exodus bags. Still to get my iodine etc. Got some last time at an outdoor shop in Huddersfield. Looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the group

Best wishes

Hi Brian - Good to hear from you. They have booked us on a British Midland flight from Manchester to Heathrow which we are not to happy with as it means a five hour 40 minute wait at Heathrow - so might have to do a bit of retail therapy while we're there!

I wrote to Exodus and to Lifesystems as I have been unable to source any iodine and all the outdoor shops are now pushing the Lifesystems Chlorine Dioxide as the iodine has been taken off the European market. These are the replies I had which are somewhat reassuring.

Exodus:Personally I have no problem with iodine but, as it's not available in the UK these days, I normally just opt for some chlorine based treatment and some taste neutraliser to counter the taste.

The chlorine products aren't new and have been around for years but iodine was always the traditional option. On the trek bottled water is available until the start of the Sanctuary (about halfway through) and boiled or treated water after that, so I wouldn't worry too much.
Lifesystems:

With regards to chlorine dioxide chemical treatment as a means of water treatment, many studies and reviewers have investigated its efficacy against pathogenic bacteria and the protozooan cysts and viruses entrapped in bacterial biofilms with very positive results.  The success can be attributed to its ability to penetrate the depths of any biofilm through the oxidation process, a characteristic that cannot be matched by iodine or chlorine.  Also consider that an increasing number of waterborne intestinal illnesses are resulting from bacteria (despite the increasing hype about viruses and protozoa) such as Enterococci (common in areas where stock animals are allowed). After reviewing virtually every water treatment technology on the market (both chemical and physical), Lifesystems believe that Chlorine Dioxide is the treatment of choice.  This has been tested in clear mountain streams, mucky pond water, farmland and international waters known to be contaminated with amoebic pathogens and other forms of dysentery. For more contaminated or suspect waters, Lifesystems do recommend doubling the dose and/or the contact time, but for most locations in the Western world, the standard dose and contact time is usually sufficient.

All the Best, Jools

Hi Jools and Mike.

The big black bag arrived on Saturday so now I can start filling it and checking the weight etc. Think I've got eveything bar the trots treatments. Off to  Snowdonia now for a week so hopefully can get some hillwalking in.

Best wishes

Hi chris and Ange

Good to hear from you. I live at Greetland, between Elland and Halifax. I got a cheap flight to Heathrow but its with BA so if they are on strike I might be scrounging a lift, hopefully they won't be. If I get chance I'll email you re the drink, I'm away on a first aid course this weekend and on holiday next week up at Port Mulgrave near Whitby. Looking forward to the trip and meeting you, looks like we've got a few 'Northerners' on the trek.

Best wishes

Looking forward to meeting everyone.  We are driving down to Heathrow on Friday from Rotherham.  That's Dave and Kath.  Our daughter, Debbie, is also coming along and she comes from Huddersfield!   First time in Nepal, not sure what to expect.  Been up to more than 4000 before on a couple of occasions and seem to manage pretty much okay.  Killi wa a different story however!  Is anyone else going on the Chitwan extension?  Starting to get things together for packing.  Cant' wait.  See you all soon.

Hi Brian, Jools and Mike

We have been upto 5400m in Equador and similar in Ladach, never taken the tablets but have had lots of garlic soup on trek. As yet we have not started packing but we are seriously thinking about it. Doing up the daughters house is impinging on any serious preperation for this trip but I feel confident all will be well, as in life it's got two chances. May the force be with us.

All the best and see you soon
