Hello, Is there anyone else going on the Discover Sri Lanka trip in February?? I've been given this trip as a gift (yes, lucky me!!) and feel totally unprepared!! Have been to Kenya and Tanzania with Exodus before, which was incredible and I am really excited about this next trip!! Would love to hear from fellow travellers!!

Ok guys... 1 month to go!!! How exciting!! I can't wait! Have bought myself some more craghoppers travel trousers - I found these most useful when I was in Africa. Will be packing tshirts, not sure if we are allowed vest tops in view of shoulders being on show (any ideas anyone?),one or two long sleeved tshirts,an extra pair of shorts (the craghopper trousers are zip offs),a fleece jumper and a jacket.is anyone taking any 'normal' clothes???

I unfortunately had a car accident this week and am now suffering with whiplash,so my plan to get fit for the Adam's Peak climb has been put on hold, but I still really want to participate in as many activities as possible!! It's going to be amazing!

Are you all going on the flight arranged by Exodus or making your own way there? Perhaps it could be nice to meet somewhere at the airport?

I havent really got much to take with me. I'm going to take long trousers, 3 quarter length trousers, long sleeve tops, scarfs, fleece, waterproofs, swimwear, sandals and walking boots. If i need anything else, then I'm sure I can purchase it from there.

In regards to the airport i'll be on the group flight. I'll be traveling from Manchester and airport to London, and I believe I have 5 hours to wait at London before we depart to Sri Lanka. Its hard to meet up somewhere before (as it also depends which terminal/gate we are leaving from). I'll probably be sat down eating somewhere before the 13 hour flight! It would be nice to meet, but it might not be practical ... unless anyone has any suggestions???

Hi guys, less than a month to go, sooo excited! I've started packing already!

I'm also on the group flight. When I went to Kenya on my own last year I got to the airport super early and hung out in the wetherspoons so that will probably be my plan again, WH Smiths is just downstairs from it, so I think that should give good enough co-ordinates. What time dunno, mid afternoon, a good couple of hours before gate opens probably as my travel to Heathrow takes a while and I don't like to be late. Hope we can meet up there if not, I'll see you in Sri Lanka!

Sorry to hear about your car accident Clarissa, hope your okay? I was amused by the multiple posts of your message. If that's a measure of your excitment for this trip then I think it matches mine lol.

Hm... I agree there may some difficulties with meeting at the airport - hm... have you had your flight tickets yet?? I haven't... and therefore have no idea what time the flight is....

I am having lots of physio and am on plenty of painkillers to deal with my whiplash - am hoping to get it sorted as best as possible before we go. may not be able to do the whitewater rafting... we'll see.... fingers crossed!!

I don't have any walking boots, but i reckon I'll be ok with my Merrell trainers - at least I hope I will be - and travel sandals and flip flops.

I've heard it might be a good idea to take a sleeping bag liner, in case the bed linen in some places is a bit dubious.... or am I being a bit over the top?

is anyone taking jeans, dresses or 'normal' clothing for dinners / evenings at the hotels?

and how much is everyone taking for spending money? i haven't a clue.... starting to get myself in a bit of a flap now, as it's less than a month now!! but so excited!

Flight is 21.25 on 19th Feb, tickets are supposed to come about two weeks before, so fingers crossed they get here in time. I don't have any reason to doubt Exodus yet, they have proved themselves excellent in all other aspects.

As for sleeping bag liner, I've nver even heard of them before, might be a good idea. I've heard accomodation might be a bit "rustic" at some locations, but all part of the fun I guess!

As for normal clothes, think cool cottons might do it for eve, smart casuals rather than dressing up I should think. Will probably travel in combats, hope it's not going to be snowing when I leave home like it was last year for my Kenya trip, less than 24 hours later I was sipping a beer in a beautiful sunny garden! Winter holidays to sun are great!

Have you read the trip notes? Loads of info in there like financial costs of food costs and excursions. They reckon about £15 a day for food, then a bit more for water and souvenirs etc.

Not long to go, can't wait!

I personally will not be taking dresses and evening wear. I'm of a more practical person. Because I am taking a rucksack rather then a suitcase, there is only so much I can carry. I'm also very aware of mosquitoes in the area, and will more then likely keep covered up for that reason alone. In regards to money, i'm thinking of how much i'd be happy to spend each day, then adding slightly extra (just incase). So as an example it is recommended to take £15 a day for food; i'm thinking £5 a day for water; and an extra £5 a day for miscalleaneous items, which equates to £25 a day, in turn equals to £400 in total for the full 16 days. Hope this helps :)

400.00 GBP = 70,905.00 LKR

What sort of clothes do I pack?
Lightweight, light coloured cotton clothes are best suited for the warm temperatures of a tropical country like Sri Lanka. Some warm clothes are recommended if you are heading for the hilly regions, where the evenings tend to get chilly.

Is there any particular dress code that I should be aware of?
Evening wear – advisable to bring one set, as larger hotels insist on ‘long attire’ for men during dinner (no shorts and no sandals). Ladies could come in dresses, skirts or long shorts, but not in any beach/ swimwear.
The Hill Club in Nuwara Eliya insists on ‘formal attire’ for dinner.
Dress modestly at religious sites. You should remove your shoes and hat when entering a Buddhist or Hindu temple, if carrying an umbrella unfurl it. Your legs & shoulders should be covered; never enter a temple in beach wear (i.e. shorts or singlet).
Nudity is absolutely not allowed anywhere. This includes at the beach. Even topless sunbathing is prohibited

Can you recommend a rough pack-list?
•           2 pairs of cotton trousers
•           pair of shorts (men only)
•           2 pairs long (ankle - length) cotton skirts (women)
•           underwear & swimming gear
•           few T-shirts or lightweight shirts
•           sweater for cooler nights in the hills
•           one pair of sneakers or shoes
•           socks - useful for visiting temples, specially areas exposed to the sun
•           sandals, slippers (flip flops, thongs) - handy to wear when showering
•           set of 'dress-up' clothes
•           sun hat or umbrella
Last but not least, try getting a sarong. Very light, cool and Packs down to nothing; suits all purposes and occasions, including the temple etiquette.

what do you reckon is classified as 'formal attire' for dinner at the Hill Club? This is the one thing I am not sure about...

just under 3 weeks to go now :)

The plane tickets are e-tickets, well they were a year ago. You will get an email for joining instructions and your Electronic Ticket Locator Reference will be included.
Trainers should be fine for walking, the most walking you do is at Horton Plains
Formal attire? A shirt and black jeans is what I wore at the Hill Club.
You wont need a sleeping bag liner, all the hotels are good.
Spending money? Depends on how much you drink, how much you shop and how much you eat - and only you know that. A lot of the time it's buffet in the hotels, but some offer a la carte and I did that a lot. It actually cost less than the buffet, but I did it because I didn't want to eat the mountain of food that was available. Think I spent around £300 in the end.

Thanks for the info Wanderlustg, especially the bit about the food, I was wondering how that works. Clothes wise I've got it all sorted, slightly smarter black cotton top for my "formal attire" so I don't look like a scruffpot all the time, lol. T-shirts, trousers etc for rest of the time.

Ten days from tommorrow and counting!!
