FINNISH WILDERNESS WEEK

the ice climbing on site should be inclusive. charging a euro to flavour your hot water in the flask seemed a bit petty . easy chairs to relax and socialise in after meals would be really good .

MT KENYA ASCENT

Mount Kenya is frequently desribed by friends as a 'prettier' climb than Mt Killimanjaro, so with that in mind I set off on the ascent with a group of like minded souls from various walks of life.

The ship on which we travelled was totally fit for purpose allowing access to areas of the Svalbard Archipelago in the far north of Norway that are not navigable by larger vessels. We were able to explore fjords and the landmass of the Arctic Circle by means of the zodiacs on board and thus really experience the wildlife, the terrain and the ice formations that make the region unique.

CYCLING IN THE LOIRE VALLEY

The Loire Valley is a superb region for cycling for riders of all standards. The variety of natural settings (forests, vineyards, farms, rivers) and the built environment (castles, villages, towns) provides for entertaining and informative travel. The terrain is gently undulating and our route generally avoided busy roads. The accommodation was just right: friendly staff in family style hotels with excellent food (where provided)

CUBA: LA ISLA GRANDE

Cuba was high on my list of places to visit before it changes too much, and I’m glad I went when I did. Those who say they have been to Cuba and sat on a white sandy beach in a 5-star resort have not seen the real country. There is so much more to it – amazing architecture, beautiful scenery, interesting history, as well as the lovely beaches. It’s refreshing to visit somewhere without a Starbucks or McDonald’s on any corner, although the local cuisine is limited in its variety. Learning about the local politics, education system, healthcare and economic situation was fascinating, thanks to our very knowledgeable Exodus guide. The Isla Grande trip really does take you around the whole country. This does mean lots of coach travel, but it was comfortable, air conditioned and allowed for a quick snooze after the dancing and mojitos of the night before. The hotels varied but on the whole were of good quality. There is a real variety of activities included – boating down rivers, exploring in the jungle, whizzing around cities on bike taxis and dancing in the music halls. It was an action-packed trip, with a great group of people, and yet another memorable holiday with Exodus.
