WALKING IN BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA

I don't often write reviews but this time I felt the need to!! This was the best Exodus holiday I've been on in a while, I loved every minute of it and I could have stayed longer.

LOIRE CYCLING WEEKEND

We experienced lots of organisational problems. When we arrived at our first hotel in Amboise, we were sent on a 20 min walk to another hotel. It took a long time to explain to the management of this hotel who we were. We were told that our bikes would be at the new hotel but they came later. The trip notes said we would collect our bikes from the shop. When the bikes arrived, they did not have an allen key (as promised) so we could not lower one of the seats (which we needed to do) and did not have a front panier with a waterproof cover for maps - as promised. It rained most of the time on our holiday so this was sorely missed. At our next hotel, our bags had not arrived when we got there so we could not shower or change after our cycle ride. They came much later. We were told the taxi had broken down and were offered dinner in the hotel, as compensation (but we had already planned to eat elsewhere). At the next hotel, they didn't know we were meant to be half board so there was quite a bit of negotiating to do. A final point was that we found the directions in the towns we visited to be very poor.

Exodus Response

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with feedback about your recent Loire Cycling Weekend trip. I am very sorry to hear of the logistical problems that you experienced. I have been in touch with the local operator who is very apologetic with regards to the mix up with the hotels and the luggage not arriving on time. He has taken this to heart and will endeavour to ensure that this does not happen in the future. With regards to the allen key, we do not usually provide these as there is the risk that bolts might not be tightened properly, leading to potential health and safety issues. On occasions where assistance is needed (such as the allen key and waterproof panniers) we do urge clients to call the contact details provided in the front of the route notes as the operator is always on standby to solve issues such as these. That saying, I am again truly sorry that you experienced these problems on your trip. I do greatly appreciate your feedback and for next season will be including detailed maps of the towns visited as well as the route notes to make the directions clearer.

LADAKH: STOK KANGRI CLIMB

A fantastic place and all the better for having Exodus behind us all the way. The organisation was faultless and the support given by the trek leaders was invaluable. Don't believe the temperature graph in the brochure when it says the average temperature in Leh in July is less than 20C, I'm not sure it fell below 30C! Otherwise a great trip and thoroughly recommended. Didn't need to buy all that winter clothing though!

NAMIBIA LODGE ADVENTURE

This trip was excellent value for money. We saw a lot of Namibia, the game park was brilliant and our guides were first class. If you want a trip to get a good snapshot of Namibia this will easily meet your needs.

SPITSBERGEN IN DEPTH

The Arctic can be a place of uncertainty.  But the weather, the ice  and the wildlife (polar bears, foxes and millions of birds) did all the right things at the right time in the right places

Exodus Response

Porters are paid significantly more than the $3 a day mentioned in this review, in fact Exodus pay significantly more than the recommended daily amount set by The Kilimanjaro National Park and the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators.

Our porters are also expected to have suitable mountain kit. We have regular inspections to enforce these standards. Porters missing items of kit have to report to our office on the next Monday morning to explain the reason. The porter then has to demonstrate they have the correct kit before they get further work. Within the Tanzanian culture it is very much the norm that porters might get a good quality item from a client and sell it locally for cash. We not only expect our porters to have suitable kit but as there are no manufacturers of such kit in Tanzania we regularly bring in suitable kit from England. Over the years we have distributed to our mountain crew at least 200 gortex waterproofs, 80 pairs of walking boots, 350 sleeping bags, 100 pairs of gloves, 50 sleeping mats, 100 warm hats.

THE AMALFI COAST

This was our first trekking holiday and our first trip with Exodus - both were great.  The Hotel Due Torri was a perfect base for some wonderful walks.  It was confortable with lovely food and very friendly and helpful staff.  We felt like we were tourists sharing in a part of 'real Italy', rather than holiday Italy.  The guide was superb with loads of local knowledge and heaps of infectious enthusiasim.  The walks were tough in places (for leisurely/moderate grading) especially in the August heat but they were well worth the effort for some spectacular views.  In addition, you get to visit the amazing ruins of Pompeii and peer into the (active) Vesuvius volcano.  I would thoroughly recommend this trip.
