A nice trip, but not what I expected

It was a nice trip, but I was expecting something different. I was looking for an authentic encounter with nature, and this trip felt very touristic. The Masai Mara was fantastic, but unfortunately there were tons of tour companies around. The jeeps are communicated by radio and as soon as a jeep encounters an interesting animal, the driver alerts the others and in a matter of minutes tens of jeeps with tourists arrive at the same spot. It is indeed a fantastic place, but there are a lot of tourists around. We were lucky enough to see a lot of animals in August, and apparently it's not such a great sightseeing experience during non-migration season. If you are offered to visit the Masai village, be aware they practice FGM and if you feel uncomfortable with this practice, you might want to consider whether to pay the entrance to support them or not. The brief visit to the village ends in an improvised gift shop inside the village, where you are pushed to buy incredibly overpriced souvenirs. It really felt forced and kinda defeated the authentic experience of their culture I expected to have. In terms of accommodation, I thought it had the right balance of camping and permanent camps / hotels. The first camp where we stayed was not good: the first night there was a bunch of British teenagers partying until 3 or 4 am. The second night I talked to the camp manager and they did stop the music at 11pm, which was good. The rest of the camps were very nice, even the more basic ones. The thing that perhaps disappointed me the most was to get to places after long drives and not have any activity included in the trip to do. Of course you have what's called "optional activities" which you can pay to join, but (a) they were seriously overpriced (b) I didn't consider the activities "optional" because I hadn't fly all the way from London to stay at the camp. It'd have been nice to have an alternative activity included, even a walk in nature would have been exciting. It has to be said that our cook Dun was amazing, with very abundant and tasty food with and it was never a problem to serve different dietary requirements (coeliac, vegetarian, etc). Our driver Ben was super skilled and kept us safe through challenging roads. The entire crew made us feel always very well and at home.

Our 5 star adventure

From the moment we were greeted by Kiptoo Peter Langat we knew it was going to be an adventure. He showed us to the transport and within 10 minutes we knew the whole group, everyone was very excited to meet and get the trip started. Within half an hour of the journey to Nairobi everyone was at ease with each other and looking forward to the next 18 days ahead.

Gorillas and Masai Mara

Amazing wildlife viewing with really close encounters both on the Masai Mara and in Rwanda. A fairly busy trip but without the added stress of having to do camp chores all the time. Life in the truck can be chaotic at times - patience and good humour essential. Go during the migration period and see more animals than you thought possible. Highly recommended if wildlife viewing is your priority.

Gorillas and Masai Mara

Wonderful trip. I spent large amounts of time watching various animals feeling like a giddy schoolgirl. I learnt a lot too. And photographed a lot. And laughed a lot. I loved it. A lot. My only niggles were the bit of dead time towards the end and the fact we kept missing the leopards. Perfect excuse to go back though...

Masai Mara and Mountain Gorillas

Adventure of lifetime. It has been a wonderful experience of life with the roller coaster of emotions. Masai Mara is the best bit of the travel. I had the best time watching the wild animals live which was a dream come true. Whitewater rafting in Uganda was a breathtaking experience which I would never forget in my entire life. I can dub the experience as "thrilling and killing". Even though the scariest bit, it was the most enjoyable part. Thanks to my friend who pushed me to take part in this adrenalin pumping excitement. Lake Bunyoni is one of the most beautiful places in Uganda which was iconic. With its scenic beauty it was the most pleasant place to stay. Rwanda was a mixture of emotions. The holocaust museum with the devastating pictures of the people who got killed almost reduced me into tears. It was unacceptable to believe that this happened exactly twenty years from the time I was there. Happen to meet some victims who went through this hell and shared their emotional stories. Following the best part on the other hand when I happen to see our nearest cousins(Gorillas of Virunga mountains) so close, was awesome. Lastly, I found the trip most exciting as the my co travelers were excellent company combined with excellent chef Michael who was flawless and served us the best food at all times. I can summarize the whole experience as Lifetime Adventure.

Gorillas and Masai Mara

This is an adventure of a lifetime, combining the wonderful wildlife of Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda with the different terrains and aspects of these countries. It was so interesting to visit the Masai village to see inside a typical house and to have the opportunity to meet the men, women and children. The walk to the Little Angels Needy children and orphanage project and meeting Musinguzi Duncan and the children from the project. The boat trips on Lake Naivasha, Lake Victoria and Lake Bunyonyi. It was really nice to meet and talk to the other members of the group and Often, Jackson, Michael and Wycliffe the team looking after us.

African Adventure

This is a fantastic trip and we were very lucky to have Often as our tour leader. It's relatively easy going but there are some long journeys but lots to see. There are only five nights of proper camping and only two of these are rough camping. The other nights are in permanent tents or mid-range hotels. There are several places with wifi, lots of places to charge cameras (as well as the truck) and plenty of supermarket stops. Camp food is fantastic. The truck is pretty comfortable but check the locker size on trip notes as it's better to have a bag that fits easily in the locker. That's the practical stuff but seeing a Giraffe appear over the horizon in the Masai Mara or finding a Gorilla sitting on the path as you come round the corner is absolutely magic. Travelled with an adventurous but laid back group which was the icing on the cake. And one last practical thing - they aren't joking about the gloves and long / thick clothes for the gorilla trek, there are thorns and giant Rwandan nettles!
