Southern Tanzania Safari

Quiet parks

The main reason for choosing this safari was the hope of seeing wild dogs, which we did. We also saw lions, hippos, elephants and many more animals and beautiful birds. The animal viewing at times was great but at other times we went hours without seeing anything. Although we knew there would be lengthy drives between parks before we booked we feel that it would have been better to have either flown between parks or only visited two and then spent more time - after all it was a safari holiday and we didn't have many full days game driving. The accommodation was good, especially Mikumi which stood head and shoulders above the others.

Exodus Response

We would like to thanks Ineke, David, Paul and Pauline (reviews below) for their reviews. We are, however, very sorry that this departure did not run in accordance with our expectations and we have since been in touch with each group member on an individual basis. We realise that this trip was lacking in leadership and that unfortunately there were some issues with the vehicle, and all the feedback we have received has been taken on board and acted on accordingly. We are also looking at changes to the itinerary next year to include more time in Mikumi National Park and improve the flow of the trip; we are confident, therefore, that future departures will be better received by our clients.

Stunning scenery and wildlife

The Southern Circuit of game parks in Tanzania is largely ignored by the majority of visitors to this country and consequently you believe you are the only visitors - this makes visiting the game parks most enjoyable. Each of the destinations is unique and the contrast is very enjoyable.

This trip, whilst enjoyable (the group I traveled with were great), certainly has issues in my opinion. This is why I've only rated it 2 stars, due to the comparison to other safaris I've done over the last few years. The main fault is with the itinerary, which makes the holiday feel far too rushed. Of the 10 day trip, only four full days are spent on safari. All other days are spent driving between each destination. For a trip billed as a safari holiday, I feel this is not the best out there. I did my research and knew long drives were involved, but with so many days spent travelling I feel the itinerary should be tweaked greatly and/or extended. Starting in Selous we stayed by the River and did the first two days of game drives. The billed boat safari was very disappointing and I thought a bit of a joke, being little more than a ferry service with occasional stops to view either buffalo weavers or hippos. I did a boat safari on the Chobe River in Botswana a few years ago and that was far superior. Viewing animals from a boat gives a whole new safari experience and one I was very much looking forward to repeating, but as I stated this one was disappointing. Ruaha was definitely the most difficult place to spot animals (though it did have some very nice scenery), with some heavily wooded areas and sometimes very long grass, covering half of an elephant's height, though this was nice for photography. Unless you have expert trackers as guides I feel you'd be hard pressed to see anything. Of the places visited, Mikumi was by far the best for animal spotting and viewing, with wide open spaces and low grassland areas. Interestingly, this is the one place we spent the least amount of time in. I keep asking myself why this is. The itinerary is definitely flawed! Mikumi also has far fewer trees than the other parks, which also added to the ability to view animals. It should also be noted that if you're expecting large numbers of animals then this trip might not best best suited for you. None of the parks have the large numbers of animals you might expect to see in Northern Tanzania, for example. I feel the trip would benefit greatly by either basing the destinations in Selous and Mikumi or Mikumi and Ruaha, with the former being my preference. More time also needs to be spent at each destination. On a plus note, the food was better than expected and I liked the accommodation in all places.

An excellent safari, mainly because of the scarcity of other tourists in a vast landscape. The size of the area necessitated some very long journeys over less than ideal terrain-- but we were warned in the trip notes. The scarcity of other tourists led to amazing experiences with our truck [6 guests and one driver/guide] having close-up and private sessions just feet away from groups of lion and elephant. We really had a privileged insight into the animals' social activities. The three lodges were excellent. Selous had an extraordinary riverside site and the food was amazing [thank you George]. Ruaha lodge had a inspirational site up high, with a greater than 180 degree view over the forest and savannah below for glorious sunrise and sunset. The facilities in this lodge [and the staff, particularly the ever-smiling Cashew] and the lodge at Mikumi are excellent. Safari was the aim of the holiday and we got what it said on the box. A wonderful trip for those of us addicted to Africa and safaris.Such a contrast with other East African safari areas where several jeeps are scrambling and racing to get to the best views. In our jeep or walking we had a superb personal privileged experience.

SOUTHERN TANZANIA SAFARI

I went on this trip to see African wild dogs - despite several previous trips to Africa I’d only had a short, twilight encounter with one individual, so when we managed to see a small pack dozing that = success! Good memories of the trip also came from the group I travelled with which isn’t something you can plan for – small groups (just 6 of us) can be good or bad, so I count myself lucky – thanks guys and gals!

We saw lots of wildlife, both animals and birds, in parks which have few visitors.   The accommodation is good but there are some long road journeys.   A trip for people who are keen to see wildlife rather than those who want a luxury or safari and beach holiday.

SOUTHERN TANZANIA SAFARI

As a bit of an old hand on Safari I have been on a couple of dozen similar safari`s & I have been to this neck of the woods before. However this time we went to 3 lesser known parks, in a small (6) group and stayed in really rather wonderful accomodation. We also got rather lucky with the birdlife (Crested eagle, dark chanting Goshawk,Palm-nut vulture), and the mammals with the highlight of the trip being a pack of 7 African Wild-dogs!
