Annapurna Circuit 12th April - 2nd May 2015

The Annapurna circuit is still a brilliant trek despite the presence of the new road/track, and we enjoyed a beilliant trek with a good group, 13 in total. the earthquake of 25th April caused some drama as we approached Larjung, with rockfall starting in several places in the Kali Gandaki valley.

Stuck in snow at Manang!

5
Blue skies clouding up a bit in the afternoon was what we expected. Instead, we unfortunately got severe winter weather with 48 hrs of continual snow leading to the closure of the Thorung La and trapping us along with a Russian party in waist deep snow in Manang! We had to retreat by cutting a path using ice axes and body force through the snow to Hunde (first leg), then again, a day later, to Pisang. This was pretty arduous and cold. It took us 10 hrs to cover the 4kms to Hunde arriving at dusk and eternally grateful for a full moon. Fortunately most of us had good winter treking gear with us. Many though suffered wet feet as conditions underfoot were severe -treated nubuck leather boots did well. Microspikes were good where the snow was compacted or iced. Hands got cold/wet - teaching me to use a layered glove system on a trek. We had to retrace our steps to Besishahar which was quite tedious except that we saw Manaslu from Timang and Annapurna 11 became fully visible. Manaslu had been obscured by rain cloud on the way up and we had had only brief glimpses of Annapurna 11. The new road/dam construction does impact on the attractiveness of the trail on this side. We then crossed to Birethanti by a bus arranged by Exodus from Besishahar and had a successful circular mini-trek in deliciously warm weather and good visibility to Poon Hill/Ghorepani and over via Tadapani to Ghandruk and back. The views from Poon Hill were outstanding. The lodge at Ghorepani is in a great location and many of the rhodedendron were in bloom - a beautiful sight.

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT

A fantastic three weeks of amazing scenery, wonderful people and great insight into the local culture of Nepal. You've got to be up for a lot of walking - 18 days on the trot - but it is well paced and, challenges of altitude aside, not too difficult if you are reasonably fit and used to hillwalking.

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT

Not having three weeks, I did the Mini Annapurna Circuit option. It was fabulous - still included the pass, the figurative and literal high point for most of us! Scenery changed every day, from green rice paddies to fiery autumnal colours and of course, snowy summits all around - I could never get bored of those views. Even our guides who'd done the trek so many times were still taking photos the whole way round like the rest of us!

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT

We had previously done little trekking and had never visited Nepal. For us, therefore, trekking the Annapurna Circuit was much more than a photography-fest. It was an overwhelming experience, as intense as it was humbling; an experience that taught us much we didn't know about ourselves and about the Nepalese mountain folk who cared for us.

I can't think of a better way of spending 3 weeks' of my annual leave. It was a wonderful and very varied introduction to the Himalayas, and I hope to return in the future.

ANNAPURNA CIRCUIT

Walking the Annapurna Circuit was the achievement of an ambition formed when doing the Sanctuary trek previously with Exodus. There is something compelling about Nepal – the biggest mountains in the world, the hugely varied landscape, the amazing people, the harmony between different religious beliefs.
