Walking the Great Wall

Walking the Great Wall

Fantastic trip – well organised, excellent itinerary and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The walking is pretty tough with hundreds of steps, but the amazing views are worth it. It’s hard to appreciate the scale of the wall until you see it stretching out for miles in every direction. The accommodation was better than I’d expected, as was the food. Sadly, I tore a ligament halfway though, which put me out of action for the rest of the trip, but based on the days I did do, I’d recommend this holiday to anyone.

Walking the Great Wall

Bucket List Must

4
The Great Wall Walk/Trek organised by Exodus was a great experience. The tour leader (Jerry) must be congratulated on his professionalism - he never missed a thing (even carried a lady down the Wall after she had either broken or sprained an ankle). Accommodation was better than I expected in the villages we had to stay in. The Food was always fresh and there was plenty of it (mostly vegetables though but still tasty). The magnitude of the Great Wall is overpowering. Must say that for anyone who intends attempting the Walk then I suggest you have a reasonable level of fitness if you are over 50 years of age - the steps (numerous) at times are taxing. Strongly recommend Exodus if you intend "shopping"the net for companies who run similar ädventures">

Walking the Great Wall

Walking the Great Wall

5
Approximately five days walking up to and atop the Great Wall of China, largely in sections that are closed to the general public. The walking is sometimes challenging and the conditions, unique (e.g., hundreds of steps, often narrow or with high risers; steeply sloped stone paths, like staircases without stairs; ladder access) but the scenery at the top is awe-inspiring. In addition, there is a tour of historical sites in Beijing plus a visit to the East Qing Tombs. While the add-on to Xian focuses on the terracotta warriors, it also offers the chance to see another different city quite different from Beijing.

Walking the Great Wall

Great way to see a great wall!

This trek is a great way to get an impression of this magnificent wall. We only touched a tiny part of it and yet it felt like we'd seen a big part. All sections looked slightly different, some restored like you usually see in the pictures and some looked more like forest paths as there was so much growth and so little wall left. The pace was good, not too slow, not too fast, and we had plenty of free time to chill out and socialize at the end of each day. The food was excellent!

Walking the Great Wall

China - Walking the Great wall plus Xian extension

5
The trip was well organised and was as described in trip notes. Any changes to itinerary were made by the group leader and as for example our early visit to Tiananmen Square and the forbidden Palace were excellent choices because of the timing of the trip and National Day!!! The accommodation was generally as described in the trip notes but home stay was quite basic and cold!!! The Qing Feng Hotel was very basic and the food not up to the standard of other accommodation. One of our best lunches was at the farm on day 5. The extension to Xian was well organised but again extremely busy which made it very difficult to feel the full impact of the site. The over night train journey fine but quite and experience!
